Understandably, this is not how Mangini and Tannenbaum will draft. *If the draft actually go like this, I will kick my cat.*
This is not a terrible draft by any means. Ross isn't a bad choice if we're losing Barrett. However, I think a 2a pick of a WR is a mistake. Make no mistake, Craig Davis will be a solid player in the NFL. There is no way I pass on Ben Grubbs or Aaron Spears to take him though. The need at OG is huge for us, and Yanda is a droppoff in talent. Tim Shaw is a high upside prospect at OLB, and would actually be a great pick near the end of day one. Here's my Kiper mock modifications. 1. Aaron Ross - CB - Texas 2. Ben Grubbs - OG - Auburn 2. Zach Miller - TE - Arizona State 3. Tim Shaw - OLB - Penn State
CBs Ross seems like a solid CB - big and w/ some speed. The Houston pick from the other joker scares the crap out of me. Talk about Justin Miller. This guy is a workout wonder w/ 4.32 speed and 27 reps of 225 - oh yeah, he also had EIGHT pass interference penalties last year. Are you kidding me! I'm surpised no one has us taking a safety in there. We always seem to grab at least one every year, and usually higher than most people expected them to go. I agree w/ most of you about both lines being a need as well as TE but if you can't get one of the top 2 TEs, might as well stand pat there and go for value somewhere else.
"The Jets were not specific when discussing their draft needs. Their director of college scouting, Joey Clinkscales, would say only that they had no glaring needs. They will most likely try to improve at defensive lineman and cornerback. By the 25th pick, however, the most highly regarded cornerbacks could be off the board. “Are there certain cornerbacks that will be drafted in the first round?” Clinkscales said. “Absolutely. Maybe all of them. But it’s just hard to say at this point.” He added that this year’s draft was deep at cornerback, safety, defensive back and wide receiver. The Jets did not reveal the names of the 34 players they had brought in. But Clinkscales was asked about cornerbacks Chris Houston of Arkansas, Darrelle Revis of Pittsburgh and Aaron Ross of Texas. He gave glowing reports, noting that Houston and Revis could compete for a starting job immediately." Thats a excerpt from a Times article posted in another thread. Makes me wonder if Kiper is right because the scout is stating he believes Ross too be a project. Scare tactics?
What on earth would make you feel that way? The only thing they have in common is that "on paper" they play the same position. I say "on paper" because what Miller does I wouldn't really call playing the position.
I know nothing about Tim Shaw but hasn't PS put more linebackers in the NFL then any other college team in history?
Coles' shelf-life is limitted. I would be very surprised if he's here for more than another season or two. Additionally, WRs usually take a couple of years to develop into a consistent starter. A WR would not be a bad investment. I'm not sold on the TEs in this draft. Olsen was rated below Miller before the workouts started. I'm not convinced either one is the complete TE that we need. Olsen's blocking is not good enough to give the running game a boost.
I agree. If you are at the top of the first round you can pick a player based on need, because everyone is great (like we did last year with D'brick). However, where we pick this year it has to be the best player on the Jets board. I don't see them picking the 4th or 5th best corner in lieu of the best guard, or best TE or another guy who fits all the Jets criteria (smart, tough, loves football). If it does turn out to be a corner, it is because that is the BPA on the Jets radar...not because of need. The only positions they absolutely won't pick in the first round are: QB, S, or C. Anything else is possible.
And that Greg Buttle guy wasn't bad either...until he became an commentator! I think the Mocks posted in the Draft page of this site make more sense than most of what the "professionals" predict. The two cited in this thread included.
