    Why do you think that?

I thought he played well last season and who should replace him? The only way I see Barton out is that the CS gives Schlegal a serious shot at starting.

yeah, just saw Kiper's new R1 mock has us taking Timmons. i've seen him play and he has awesome game speed. not sure about his size though.

and like Kevin68 said, if Schlegel has a legit chance, then Barton may very well get the ax.

    cheers

If we move him i can see either a 2nd rd pick or a 3rd and 4th deal. Atlanta has a lot of picks in the 2,3,4 rds so they are an option to steal from again.

I thought Barton played well during the last half of the season, but I dont think Barton will be with the team in 07. In fact, because he had a good year it makes him more valuable as trade bait than on the roster.

    Reasons:

    1. I'm a Schlegel fan and I honestly believe that he was drafted to fill the ILB job in the Jets new 3-4. I dont think they intended him to play much last season, but that he will be given an opportunity to prove himself this season. This is strictly my opinion and its based on my own perceptions. So take it however seriously you'd like.

    2. Barton will be expensive to keep. He is owed quite a bit of money and that combined with his contract status makes his status with the team questionable.

    3. He wasnt an every series player last year. By the end of the season he was only taking about 75% of the snaps. He's too expensive and too tradable to keep for 75% of the defensive plays.

    4. There are too many other guys who the coaching staff could play there -- Kassell, Schlegel, maybe Barton, and maybe a draft pick -- and cost less

Timmons is the same size or actually a few piunds lighter than Vilma, we have as much chance odf picking him as a punter in the first. I think Kiper's hairspray is getting to him. Barton is not a "need" player, but he was a great player in the 3-4 last year and brings a much needed mean streak and fire to the team. I would be sad to see him go. Right now I see us having:

Thomas, Barton, Vilma, and Hobson/Woodley or Abiamiri or Moses, Hobson stays in for 4-3 and the other guy goes in for 3-4, and keeps our guys fresh

Timmons is an OLB and specifically a rush linebacker who projects on the weakside. Vilma would be ok sized for that position, it's being in the middle that has him overmatched some.

situational for me anyway, and I am not totally sold on him. He will have to prove me wrong, also we need lots of depth with the system we run

barton will be a jet in 07 and thats a fact. here are the reasons:

    1. 3-4 needs depth at lb. and barton is one of our best right now

    2. he adjusted well to the new scheme and is a sure tackle

    3. he plays hard every down and every game

    4. he has good size and strength for a 3-4 ilb

    I'm still confused here......

Is there a reason other than salary why we should get rid of him?

He was one of our best defenders last year, why get rid of him.........

People seem to think that Barton's salary is the biggest issue related to whether or not the Jets will keep him. Given that he was the 2nd best linebacker last year behind Thomas I think there are other factors involved too.

Dude's good...I mean solid...not great, but no slouch and probably provides some veteran leadership...he's not that expensive considering what he brings to the table...2-3 million is not that much...the only way I see him as being expendable is if we have someone waiting in the wings and he's holding them back or if we get an offer we can't refuse.

Worst LB's on Jets' last season in order of poor performance :

    1-A.Schlegel....Must show something this year

    2-C.Spencer......He can be replaced !

3-Chatham...Waiting to become a coach ? He can be cut !!!!

4-Kessler.....Waste of a signing. Stick the fork in em'....He's done. Cut him

5-Vilma - When was the last time u saw this guy hit someone & drove them backwards. When last did u see him - "lay a lick" ? McGahee runs right over him ? Must show improvement.

6-Hobson....Only cause he was being played out of position....Should be ILB

    7-Barton - measnest & toughest LB on Jets'...Ask opponents

8-B.Thomas......Played good, but needs to get stronger & improve.

Salary is no issue, that's why they discovered the magic of the restructure. Give everybody a back loaded contract. When it gets expensive retructure if he is good. Cut him if he isn't.

I dont think Barton's salary is a problem this yr. If we trade him it will only save 1.5 mil. I think we have enough to keep him this yr and what is his value on a trade? 3rd rnd the best not many 3rd rnders will help us right away. But next yr will be a 3.2 mil in savings. Like I said in another thread he is on a 1 yr trial.
