The Jets are scheduled to meet with Patriot CB Randal Gay today. His is an RFA, so he is valued as a second round pick. http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2007/04/09/cornerback_gay_to_visit_jets/?rss_id=Boston.com+%2F+Sports+%2F+Football+%2F+New+England+Patriots
ummm too expensive for my blood, i wouldn't give the pats any more draft day ammo, then they allready have! if we did this for the second rounder, the pats would have 2 first round picks and 2 second rounders! do we really want to give them that much ammo?? it isn't like Gay is even that great a player, not worth the #2 in the first place IMO
Is it a prerequisite for this team to only sign players that have been out of football for years or so hurt(Gay) that they could only play in 8 games over the last two years?
They've signed Jerrico Cotchery, Thomas Jones, Kenyon Coleman, David Bowens, Anthony Clement, Hank Poteat, Wade Smith, Darian Barnes, Marques Tuiasosopo and Bobby Hamilton since the end of the season. They had no major free agents, meaning that everybody else is under contract. They also chose to sign Andre Wadsworth and Michael Haynes and apparently are talking to Randal Gay. Based on the above, why exactly do I get this feeling that your statement is rank hyperbole?
Yeah, feeding the Pats draft picks is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. No way the Jets do this, no way at all. Gay isn't of more value to the Jets than the 2nd round pick and he's worth less to the Pats than it also.
Agreed. A gentle way of tweaking the nose of Bill Belichick. This would only bother me if I thought the interest were genuine.
I don't think they do it either. He is a RFA, so next year he will be unrestricted. They might have brought him in to do a little scouting, maybe to see how high they want to target a CB during the draft? If he is healthy and like what they see the FO might consider targeting him next offseason, and so won't pick a CB as high. Just a thought, but it never hurts to do a little scouting. For all we know it could be all smoke and mirrors before the draft.
This maybe head games w/ the Pats to try to get them to overpay to re-sign Gay w/ all the Samuel Drama
I gotta say that Tannebaum and Mangini have gone way out of their way to try to knock the Pats off balance the last few years. They've signed a number of UFA's off the Pats that Belichik would probably have rather had hanging around on the available list as traing camp opened and they got in knee deep on the Branch fiasco last year that probably cost the Pats a 4th trip to the Super Bowl.
Speaking as a Patriots fan, it's interesting to read everyone comments. Gay is a pretty good player who has played for Mangini in the past. The fact that the Patriots offered him as much money as they did is an indication of his worth to them. I would not want the Jets to sign him - the late second round pick the Jets would have to give up would not be worth it for the Patriots (I don't think they would do a trade like that if they had the choice).
I can't believe they tendered him so high. I like Gay, but I'm confident we can get a cornerback in the second round who can be as good or better than Gay. -X-
At the very least this is Mangini helping maybe boost the value of a guy he coached and maybe forcing the Pats hand to sign him long term. I don't think there's much to this other than due dillegence.
Except nothing forces their hand unless the Jets actually signed him. Then they would be at risk of losing a 2nd. So I'm not sure what the point is of the Jets spending two days with him. Well, a night and a day.
