Raiders | Carr not thrilled with Raiders opening
    Sun, 1 Apr 2007 15:17:25 -0700

Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reporting for the Sporting News, reports free-agent QB David Carr will probably not join the Oakland Raiders unless he is unable to find a better situation elsewhere. Carr isn't thrilled about the idea of joining a team that likely will take a franchise-type quarterback in this year's draft.

I don't think if they bring in Carr they go QB 1st pick.

Imagine that... Moss/Porter/ C.Johnson (assuming they go with that), solid D... They might actually do better then we all may think next season.

Carr is a hell of a talent, but he should avoid that poisonous situation there like the plague. I can't believe he doesn't have more offers.

I would think Minnesota makes a lot of sense. Tarvaris Jackson is nowhere near ready, and Carr could have a one year audition for another job. This isn't Joey Harrington we're talking about here. Bottom line, Carr is a guy who has put up decent numbers despite no protection and a mediocre running game. He can still be a very good player for a very long time.

Poor guy, he'll never get to play behind an offensive line.

if oakland traded moss for a late first round/early second round pick, got carr, drafted calvin johnson and drafted a good offensive tackle like joe staley with their 33rd overall pick...they would be headed in the right direction...but it will be tough considering that their division has san diego, denver and kansas city in it

i think carr is way to good of a QB to be playing behind an o-line like oaklands

    ...apparently carr unlikely to raiders
and even if they did get carr and calvin they would still be terrible
    they need o-line

they may have had a good/great defense last year, but some of that was a result of conservative play by opposing teams
i'm not saying they dont have a good defense, but low yardage and points often results from teams only needing to score 10 b4 going into cruise control...b/c oakland wasnt going to catch up
no one needed to throw the ball to win on oakland...

i read somewhere about carr thinking about seattle...which made a lot of sense
b/c no starting job currently is a good situation...and hasselbeck is recovering from injury and seattle is good(blocking/wrs/alexander) and without a good backup
seneca wallace is not a good qb

That article makes it seem like Oakland is a last resort.

His best spot is going to be the Vikings, and I think thats where he'll end up.

First off, this thread should be titled "Carr NOT likely to go to the Raiders"

Next, if I were Carr I would be hesitant about going to the Raiders as well. But look at the situation they're in. As previously stated Carr can demand they not take a RD 1 QB this year and go for Johnson. If they take Johnson and then Staley at the top of RD2, then you've got another HUGE target and a great blocker.

The Raiders don't have too many needs... it just so happens that it appears that way cause they don't have an OLine to block the QB or to open holes for the running game. I think they should spend their day 1 picks on C. Johnson, J. Staley, M. Ramirez

Then on Day 2, they should address OLB, TE and DLine. Day 1 should be all about protecting their QB and they should make a dive for Carr. He's a good QB as we've stated operating behind a sub-par OLine. He's been a punching bag so we know he's not injury prone. I think Oakland IS the right place for Carr and if they do their draft correctly and give him another HUGE target and two top rated OLinemen, he could propser in Oakland.

Agreed on the Raiders needs Warhound. They are a far more talented team than given credit for, and a legit offensive line would go a long way towards proving that.

Honestly, Gallery can still be a pretty good RT or RG. He's a monster bust as a LT, but he can still be a damn good player. But they still need someone for like every other position on that line. That would open up the running and passing game, and all of a sudden we might see them looking pretty damn good.

Carr WILL NOT choose The Raiders.

He needs to be on a decent team.

Houston to Oakland would be a downgrade. He doesn't deserve that.

He played behind a Houston offensive line for 5 seasons... It can't get any worse in Oakland...

Raiders offense line is not as bad as it showed last year. It had more to do with Poor Oline coaching and outdated offensive system.
Lets see Dbrickshaw Ferguson gave up 10 sacks last year, thats with Pennington thowing 5-8 yard passes.(wasn't holding on to ball that long)
Imagine IF he played in Raiders system, with Qb routinely taking seven step drops and Olineman being ask to block as long as these deep patterns took to develope.(Impossible to play that way today with as much speed coming off the corner) I don't care if your talking O Pace < J Ogden or W Jones no one can block that long.

Another Point, Last time Raiders had a real Oline coach 2004(A Kromer) With pretty much the same personal they gave up 22 sacks thats with no running game, K collins(statue) and every team knowing they were going to throw the ball.

Raiders offensive system going to be alot more oline friendly. QB going to be taking three steps drops rather than 7 step drops, More of a WCo offense with vertical game sprinkled in instead of everything deep. (Compare Jordan receptions in 2005 to last year) Raiders are going to a zone blocking scheme
    than man to man system.

TOm Cable and Part time OLine coach Alex Gibbs are very good Oline coaches. Alex gibbs built the Denver olines and he did it with late Round picks. The most important position is the center position in the zone blocking system. Raiders are counting ON Jeremy Newberry who knows the system very well. Can Newberry knees hold up as this one guy could be the diffrence to the line. Raiders knowing how important that center position is might look to move up for Kalil (who knows the system very well).

Raiders defense going to be even better. Simple young guys Thomas Howard and M huff will be so much better than last year.
Tom Kelly moving to De on run downs and T sands starting at Dt will do wonders for their run defense.

I will say this again. It wouldn't hurt the Jets to bring Carr in for a look. I don't like the Raider driftwood they signed. I saw that kid play and frankly, he ain't sh!t. He showed absolutely nothing.

I hope this isn't a "play it safe/avoid the controversy" move by our FO/CS by ignoring Carr. Behind OUR Oline and playing with OUR talent, Carr could be "the sleeper" everyone knows is still out there. The downside is that Carr could supplant Clemens as the backup. Would that make folks question the FO/CS judgement? I dunno but the perception of infallibility is more important than the reality of questionable judgement in most cases when you haven't won a SB in damn near 40 years and you have a very short resume.

I'd love to see Carr throwning deep to Coles. Carr might even make JMac a viable WR again. Come to think of it, the last QB the Jets had with a respectable arm was Browning Nagle and we know how THAT turned out. Speaks volumes doesn't it?.....

Carr wants to start somewhere but Oakland. But he would not start here with Pennington and Clemmens.

But how many times does it need to be said, Carr does not want to be a backup and that is what he would be here. Carr would never come to New York. Its that simple.
