if the jets cannot trade abe.they have the option of playing him in the 3-4 defense at linebacker.which he played the position at south carolina.he excelled as a linebacker and was converted by parcells when he was drafted by the jets.at least the jets know what they have in abraham.

He would struggle horribly in pass coverage. Abe is suited to be an edge rusher in the NFL and that's all.

The only 2 people that can answer this question honestly are Mangini and Tannenbaum. I mean somebody would have to ask him/them, "Given the recent quotings and publishings allegedly made by J Abe, if he were to stay a Jet, do you think you could work out a deal that he could be happy with? Is it possible he could stay or is it out of the realm of possibility? Has there been any deterioration of the relationship between Abraham and the Jets mangement?"

We would need a truthful answer to the above and not a spin.

I think it is a foregone conclusion that financially if we wanted to continue with Abe's services, we could.

We tried a prototype with Abe in that position over the course of the last 2 seasons I believe- note that it didn't work as planned.

It was up there with "Let's fatten up Sean Ellis, move him to DT and see what happens."

what??? You should do some research before making comments like that. He was offered the same long term deal that Ellis ended up signing. That might end up being a big mistake on Abes part if he doesn't get that kind of contract now. I heard he has come off a little on his demands knowing that there was no one biting at the price he was demanding. Its just another example of a selfish player who cares about one thing and one thing only, money. I hope he gets less than what we offered him in the past.

Everyone likes to harp on their soapbox, that we mistreated Abe. Either they are too ignorant or ill-informed to recognize that HE was the one who turned down the juicy contract which was accepted by Ellis- Abe rec'd the contract offer first.

Don't spew crap about this guy being mistreated.

What about trying to move Abe to Philly for the Eagles first pick?

Philly needs an end, Kearse has been spotty and Trent Cole is still unproven.

They have the cap money (though they seem unwilling to spend it), and their draft record has been pretty awful. They're still smarting over the Jerome McDougle pick.

This way, the Eagles get a proven commodity to cover their poor draft record, the get a superstar to run in front of their angry fans, and the Jets get the 1st rounder they're looking for.

I wish for once in my life somebody would mistreat me to the tune of $12 million dollars. That is in the ball park of what he has grossed with his initial rookie signing bonus, plus salary, plus the $6.6 million he got last year for being franchised.

I would consider letting somebody tear off a testicle for $12 million.

I say keep him and move him to OLB and let him blitz 80% of the time.

Seeing as how NO team succeeds by blitzing one of their LB's 80% of the time as the first problem, what do you do when we drop him into coverage the other 20% of the time, something he isn't skilled at doing, the second problem....

The problem with keeping Abe is if we don't sign him long term is next year will be his 3rd year being tagged meaning we will have to tag him at the franchise rate of a top 5 QB. If we think he is hard to sign or trade now he will be even harder to do so next year as he will have even more contract leverage. He needs to be either signed long term before the year starts or traded.

He played as 3-4 OLB his rookie season under Al Groh. Despite the fact he was a back-up to Roman Phifer, he still tallied 5 sacks in just 6 games (playing less than half the snaps) before gettting hurt for the remainder of the season. It was Herm the Perm that converted to the 4-3 and Abe to a DE.

Dont forget, He also has 8mil more sitting on the table right now. That makes 20 mil. In Cash.

He has crossed the line to greedy f***.

HE MAY HAVE PLAYED 16 GAMES LAST YEAR, BUT HE GOT 10.5 SACKS....NOT 20.

The ROLB in a 3-4 scheme very rarely has to drop into coverage. Abe for the most part would be playing the same way he plays now except in a 2 point stance instead of a 3 point stance. Abe is not as bad in pass coverage as many of you guys make it seem. He is not great at it but he is also not awful. Plus if you have a player like Abe and ask him to drop in coverage instead of rush the passer, when you have Vilma, Barton, Hobson...etc, you shouldn't be coaching.

Abe isn't a good NFL LB. I would be curious to see him on the inside though, along with Vilma. That might not be a abad option.

The thing is, he is probably out of here. The Jets seem determined to rid themselves of his services. I think it's a mistake, but I don't make the decisions.

To those who want to say Abe had his chance, the contract offered to him/Ellis was decent. Not great, just decent. If you argue about that, then you either 1) don't believe that a player should be paid by his worth, regardless of the number or 2) you just hate JAbe that much.

Abe was disrespected repeatedly by the Jets. You can't blame him for being pissed off now. If nothing else, they PROMISED him that if he played 16 games last year, he would get his big contract. (And there was no condition about performance included in the ultimatum. He played his ass off to prove he was worth his money.)

You can hate JAbe for all of your presumed ideas about his injuries or supposed lack of desire. The fact is, he is widely regarded as one of the best pass-rushing DEs in all of football, and is highly coveted around the league. Notice that none of the rumors talk about teams shying away due to his performance or injuries, but instead teams are simply balking at his high asking price.

If you are willing to keep Ellis as one end, and DRob as our NT in a 3-4 scheme, you are crazy to not want to keep Abraham. But that's just my opinion.
