interesting line about jones being better when splitting time. I like the idea of him getting the tough yards and Washington being the big-play runner. When we first got him I was surprized, I figured we would go after a big back to compliment Washington as sort of a thunder/lightning approach. But after thinking about it, I really, really like Jones and I think he's quite underrated. Dare I say it, but he reminds me a little of Curtis Martin in his vision and ability to snake through small holes to get yardage. We did kind of overpay a bit for Coleman, but maybe Mangini and Tannenbaum see something we don't. Also dont forget, both are friends of Parcells and maybe old Bill tipped them off about something. Either way he's got to be better than Von Oelhoffen - "The Invisible Man"
The lure of free agency is to overpay. If you don't someone else will. Can you say Nate Clements, Dockery, Langston Walker, Steinbach etc etc were all overpaid.Their new teams wanted them badly so they had to overpay.Coleman is young and as a part timer has done quite well. Hamilton and Olhoffen will not be on this team next year and what better way to have their replacement on the team before the end of the year.
Well, for Coleman...the first year in his contract is for 1 million and then jumps to 4 million the next year, so I would say it's do or die for Coleman to put up his numbers in the first season.
I agree with you asscue, however it seems when you don't get the guy.. it's overpaying.. but when you do.. its not. Every free agent out there is gonna get "overpaid" what the hell is being overpaid anyway. People make projections on what a player should make, however once the player hits the open market, teams negotiate, up their bid because they want the player etc.. you understand the process.. the one who wants him the most.. will pay him the most. So yea, Nate Clements got 80 million.. but can I say for sure that he wouldn't have gotten somewhere near 80 million from someone else-- can't say.
With the cap going up so much this year, a lot of guys will seem to be overpaid, when that is really just what career backups will be making now.
I also felt we over paid for this career back up. 20 mill with 7-12 guaranteed. That’s looks like a lot for the people who glance at the report. But I am sure they have incentive clauses in the contract so that if he gets injured we won’t have to dole out big dollars. Also with the Thomas contract info, they report the same thing, guaranteed money for a running back that will split time. Just weird to me!
