No corroboration of the Colombo rumour so far. I have not found a link stating that he is going to sign with us....... I know Adam Schein gets stuff live on the air and says it, but this thread was posted an hour after Schein's show ends, and NFL.com and the other news channels have not yet picked it up. I don't wanna say BakerMaker didn't actually hear this, but I can't find anything else on it.....has anyone read anything yet?
Because this is not what that thread is about....that thread is about it being a sure thing.....this thread is about the complete lack of evidence to back it up. Difference.
If that's the rule we were following there'd be about 10 threads.....what if he was confirmed to have signed with a different team, then would it be OK, or would I have to post that report in the existing thread?
Come on bro we need more pics of Jones arms. Seriously I am half expecting links to gay porn to start showing up next!
Cornerback is not a huge need. We have five cornerbacks on the roster that started last year and have starting experience. Defensive end is obviously not a big concern in Mangini's eyes considering keeping Kimo and signing Coleman/Bowens seems legit enough to fill the hole. And it's clear to me that outside linebacker may not be as big of a need as we think considering Hobson, and Barton are both Jets and Thomas just signed a contract. We could always shore that up with a Joey Porter signing as well. Just my opinion but my biggest offseason problems to fix were defensive end and offensive guard/tackle. I feel that we may have fixed those, plus other needs with acquiring Jones.
I heard Shein say it, unless it was something new that BakerMaker heard after I said this in the Jones thread than it was clearly just his opinion. It didn't sound like he had any inside knowledge..
Columbo shouldnt cost that much if we do sign him. We should still have 20 million left under the cap. I would do a hard charge after joey porter. In theory it could be Columbo, Jones and Porter vs Thomas and Welker to the patriots. I think we would be stride for stride with them.
Well I think cornerback is a definite need, and I think we either look there (Darrelle Revis, Chris Houston, Marcus McCauley perhaps) or OG (Justin Blalock, Ben Grubbs, Josh Beekman) with our 1st round pick. As for OLB, I look at it as a future need. I think we are definitely not "weak" there, but it would be nice to get another pass rusher, and move Hobson inside. We dont NEED one, but it would be good to have one, and would definitely help. David Bowens might be an inexpensive option here, but he is not really the impact player we want for the future. DE we do NEED. I think Kenyon Coleman has to be had. Bowens is not a DE, BTW. Coleman I think should be our next priority as he fits the 3-4 DE slot perfectly, and would sure up our line for the next few years. This is the guy I have been targeting for the Jets since even before the off-season began. We also need a OT, and I do think we have Columbo. He seems interested and if there is not a deal RIGHT NOW, I believe, gut feeling, we will eventually land him, so that spot is solved. Basically we still should get a DE, CB and OG, possibly a OLB too. But we don't have any more major holes now, so I am overall happy.
Sorry but I really disagree with the draft being a luxury. Taking off the rose colored glasses for a moment here is why: This was a great trade, well a very shrewd one. Getting Columbo would seem like a good move depending on how much it does or does not cost. But our defensive line is not good and by not good I am being very very generous. Everything in a 3-4 defense starts there. Nothing has been done to fix that yet. Coleman would be a depth player not a star as will Bowens. There is a need for 2-3 top notch players still. Now the Offensive line There is Mangold and Brick, and say Columbo. Kendall is older so we need new blood there. So in essence there are still 2 more Guards to go. Specifically this line needs some mashers. By my math that means to get solid (at the very least) in the trenches there are still 4-5 holes to fill. Yes CB opposite Dyson is a pretty big need. Until the FO (who I have full confidence in) gets these spots filled the Jets will not be an elite team. That is the Partriot model and dare I say which team this Fo is looking to emulate. We are still at least 2 drafts including this one away. That said so far this front office has way exceeded my expectations. So maybe it will be faster than I think.
I havent heard anything official on Colombo, but I did hear Schein say he thinks the Jets will sign him at about 6:30. I dont know if anything else was said after that.
