The most interesting quarterback news was word of a possible trade between Washington and the Jets: The Redskins send the Jets their second-round draft pick and quarterback Patrick Ramsey up on the shuttle in return for defensive end John Abraham.

The Jets would need far more, such as instead of this year's second-rounder, next year's first-rounder (the 'Skins don't have a No. 1 this year), and dropping any conditions to a Ramsey trade such as winning the starting job or reaching performance incentives.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this happens i will stop watchin the jets. A second round pick and a backup qb worth a 7th round pick is not enough for a probowl DE who averages 11 sacks a year

The Jets finally broke the ice Monday night with the first free-agency signing of the Mike Tannenbaum-Eric Mangini era, bringing New England backup linebacker Matt Chatham into the fold.

"Matt found in the Jets an opportunity to contribute and compete to be a full-time starter at one of the linebacker spots," said Paul Sheehy, Chatham's agent. "The Jets showed a lot of enthusiasm and willingness to look ahead with Matt."

The contract is for three years. No money terms were revealed, although the deal is described as a "hybrid" that will reward Chatham, who had only four starts in six Patriots seasons, if he wins one of those linebacker jobs.

The Jets have had little activity after three days of free-agent shopping, which has many Gang Green fans griping.

Their biggest pursuit is a competitor for Chad Pennington. But Jon Kitna, one of the top available quarterbacks, left the team's complex Monday reportedly without an offer, just as he had Saturday after meeting with the Lions.

"Jon had a good visit with the Jets," Mike Moye, Kitna's agent, said in an e-mail. "He was very impressed with the coaching staff."

If neither quarterback likes the Jets' pitch, Arizona's Josh McCown could be a fallback signal-caller, although a person close to McCown said that while McCown is considering the Jets' situation, it is not a likely landing spot.

Steelers defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen also left after Monday's visit without a deal. "Kimo had a really good visit," said Mark Bartelstein, his agent. "It's hard to say what's going to happen. There are a lot of things up in the air with him."

Well, I think they are talking which is good. I think the Redskins might make the deal if te 1st rounder next year was contingient upon performance; which could float down to a 2nd or 3rd rounder in 2007 depending on......playing time, tackles, sacks, playoff appearance, injury, etc.

If they did it like that I wouldn't get too bent up about it. The idea here guys is let's get the guy (Abe) off of the table and move on.

It is a brave new world!! (I think that was a quote from one of the older Steven Segal movies - the one where the Nimitz gets pirated by coke-boy (??????? forgot his name)

I doubt the new combo are going to give up abraham for that. We need a first this year.

This only happens if the Broncos decide that they are no longer interested in Abraham. This is not fair value, but I do think that the rumors of an $18M signing bonus demand could have scared people off.

I absolutely agree with post #1.

If this is the trade that happens, I may never watch the Jets again.

Yes, if that is what he has his agent running around with then it sure would. Abe is successfully making a jerk out of himself from greed.

Ask Lavar Arrington how much signing with the Skins satisfied his greed.

yeah i would not mind if that was the case with a 2007 pick contingent on how he does, although I dont remember many deals that put a 1st round pick in the deal when it comes to how a guy performs. But I could see that possibly happening

Insert deep dramatic music here...."Those of you that say you're not going to watch the Jets anymore.... you're full of crap. God knows I've said that a million times... ex. with the Keyshawn trade... the Laverneous Coles fiasco... Santana Moss.... but you always come back.... you always come back"..
