Yea... but those guys are like their only draft picks from the past 5 years. The Skins go WAY overboard, to the point where they usually only have 3 or 4 draft picks a year (don't they have their first this year, and so far the next pick is in the 5th round?). I wouldn't have minded slightly overpaying for Thomas... we really need to fill one of the big defensive needs in FA or trade this year, because there's just too many to plug up in the draft. Please go get somebody, guys - hopefully Clements.
Name me the successful teams that go out and sign high proced FAs? The Colts didn't, the Steelers didn't, the Pats didn't, the Bucs didn't, the Rams didn't, the broncos didn't. I'm all for brining in talent but I feel cap room is more important and I am not willing to give out a $20 mil SB to a FA at this point especially when LB is the least of our concerns defensively. We finally have cap flexibility, I don't want to lose that in 1 offseason.
They have all signed big time FAs during there runs. With the cap increasing of course salaries will increase, making the signings this year seem to be more high priced than in the past. Anyway you are just throwing out the 20 mil number, I don't know that he is gonna get that. So basicly you are saying you would rather have the cap room flexibility than win a SB, ok makes sense to me. Hopefully they will start giving trophies for best cap management. LBs are not the least of our concerns, we run a 3-4 D which requires a pass rush from our LBs which was non existent last year. Do you remember the PO game, Brady had all day to throw the ball & that was a major factor into us losing the game. Improving the pass rush is a major priority this offseason if not the main priority. This conversation may become moot anyway, if these rumors are true. But I just can't see how any Jets fan that wants to win a SB would disapprove of signing the best D player available.
Name the big time FAs those teams have signed, guys that will eat up a huge amount of cap space? Who did Indy sign? who did Pitt sign? who did NE sign?, etc...
I don't have time to look through all the FAs that those teams have signed but off the top of my head, Pitt signed James Farrior as a FA, remember him?? Pats signed Roosevelt Colvin when he was a FA. Both big time signings that have done quite well for their respective teams..
James farrior wasn't a major FA, he came at a very reasonable price off 1 good year. Colvin wasn't a major FA, Rodney harrison wasn't a major FA. NE has not broken the bank the way you want the Jets to w/ Thomas. The guy is going to get a $20 mil signing bonus. Succesful teams do not sign these types of players, they don't make the huge splash in FA. They build through the draft, make good trades and sign players who won't command $20 mil type signing bonuses.
they drafted better than we did, they have the players we dont. thats why we sign them i really dont think thomas will put THAT big of a dent in the cap, your going overboard.
A $20 mil SB won't put a dent in our cap? Wew have drafted well, we have a good nucleus of drafted players we don't need to bring in high priced FAs. You guys want everyone who has a big name, you want Thomas, you want Clements, you want Turner. It's not wise or realistic, we have our own guys that need new deals that will eat into our cap and I'd rather re-sign them and sign sokme cheaper guys in FA. last year i think they said we spent $6 mil in SB's during FA and we got a big bang for our buck. Its taken 10 years to get this type of cap flexibility and it makes no sense to throw it away in one offseason.
its very realistic. nobody's claiming we need to sign all of these people. we do have room to wiggle we can sign one of these guys. one offseason wont ruin the rest of the cap for the next decade. parcells isnt here. you act like signing good players is some fairy tale tactic. "you guys want a big name" gimme a break, hes not just a name hes one of the best players in the league today. hes got about 3 yrs left in him and hed take this defense up a step. you act like im talking about signing the team over to dan snyder, theres ways to make a big signing somewhat cap friendly. the only decent sized resigning we have left is cotchery. were making more cap room as is with recent cuts. the games played on the field, by the players. and as far as I know Thomas is one of the best, I'm sick of people crying anytime we discuss a player known outside of the tristate area. you think were gonna ever succeed holding onto the 4 or 5 good but not great players we have and rolling the dice on journeyman to make plays? im not saying we need huge signings, but your acting as if the idea of getting what you pay for is stupid.
I didn't say I wouldn't want him i just don't wnat to give out a $20 mil SB to any player. If he comes reasonable I don't mind, if he comes expensive then i'll pass. ALOT of teams have cap room this offseason, there's going to be a bidding war. I would rather see other teams blow their cap and let us keep alot of room. If I had to choose 1 of the 3 big names I mentioned it would be Nate Clements, we have an excellent group of LBs, we need help in front and behind the LBs. Thomas is an excellent playuer but again how much of that is playing w/ all that talent in baltimore? and will he become satisfied after getting the big deal? Adalius is a pass rusher and he has averaged 9 sacks a year the last 3 years topping out at 11, we just re-signed Bryan Thomas and By had 8.5 this year. It doesn't make sense to throw money around when we don't have to. Not every positition has to be filled w/ a pro bowler in order to win.
Who are you to decide who is or isn't a major signing? Those are guys that were signed through FA who have helped there respective teams immensely, just as A. Thomas would for us.. We have the cap room & the cap will keep increasing every year, a big time signing for a big time player will not all of a sudden throw our cap out of whack. You know what who cares if it does anyway, I want to see the Jets win a Sb in my lifetime, signing a guy like A. Thomas brings us one step closer.
The contract determines that, none of those guys got $20 mil signing bonuses or the equivalent of a current $20 mil SB. Why does signing Thomas bring us 1 step closer to a SB? Playing on a great D surrounded by HOF talent he couldn't get to 1 but if he comes here he's going to lead our D? He's a good player, he's not worth a $20 mil SB.
You are just throwing out the 20 mil signing bonus, you have no idea what he will get. I don't care anyway, we are close to 30 mil under the cap with the cap increasing every year. One big signing won't kill our cap. He bring us one step closer because he comes right in and is our best defensive player, no question about that. You don't think bringing in a guy that improves our pass rush and our secondary and our Sts brings us one step closer to a SB?
Thomas won't get a 20 mil bonus. The Yorks in SF are too thrifty to give him that, probly won't even get 10.
His SB if not 20 mil will be close. Alot of teams have room to spend creating a bigger market and a guy like Chris kelsay just got a $13 mil SB. If he doesn't get 20 it's going to be close.
Age and money are both working against any desire that I have to sign him. He's a very good player right now but I don't see any value to signing him to a 5 year 45 million dollar deal with 15 million up front and salaries of 8 and 9 million in the first two years. That's what is being bandied about at the moment.
Thomas is a nice player but his age and the fact that he is so in demand and so many teams have plenty of cap space makes for a bad combination. Also he's coming from a defense with a ton of other good players which has to be taken into a account. The bottom line is that the best way to get good and stay good is the draft. And until you have dominating lines on both sides of the ball spending a ton of money on a linebacker is a huge waste of money. We need multiple lineman a lot more then a linebacker. Frankly it doesn't matter who is playing linebacker if our defensive line is not improved drastically. But that's okay seems like all of our fans are just dying for the quick fix, a big name player to fill the offseason boredom.
