~ ~ I think the Jets know a quality defensive tackle prospect like Justin Harrell or Tank Tyler will be there in round two. I know the Jets really liked the cornerbacks they saw today. Their coaches paid very close attention to Josh Wilson of Maryland, Tanard Jackson of Syracuse and Travarous Bain of Hampton. But they really took notice of former U.N.L.V. star Eric Wright. He is a big legal risk, but he is the best pure Cover cornerback, other than Chris Houston. Wright's skills are already N.F.L. good. Footwork is what separates the great cover cornerbacks. > http://www.draftdaddy.com/Blog/blog.cfm
There is no doubt in my mind that the first 2 picks (if they aren't traded) are going towards some combination of DE, DT, CB, OG, OT. No TE, no FB, no RB, no WR.
Eric Wright CB, UNLV War Room analysis Strengths: Is a great athlete with ideal quickness, agility and speed. Shows loose and fluid hips to turn and run with receivers without losing steps. Has the speed to run with receivers downfield and shows the explosive burst to recover after losing a step. When using good technique in off coverage, closes quickly on passes in front of him. Shows great ball skills to reach in front of receivers to break up passes and is adept at cutting in front of receivers for interceptions. Seems to enjoy physical coverage. Jolts wide receivers on presses to slow releases and squeezes receivers to sideline on downfield routes. Comes up to make strong, physical tackles in run support. Is an aggressive blitzer, delivering violent hits. Weaknesses: Shows raw footwork and an undisciplined backpedal, hindering redirection. Tends to get upright in backpedal, struggling to plant, drive and close on the ball. Is thin; lacks the frame to be durable. Missed three games in 2006 with a knee injury. Is a character risk after some off-field, legal issues at Southern Cal led to a transfer. Must perform well in interviews with GMs and coaches to prove he has matured. Bottom line: Wright, who left school after his junior season, started as a redshirt freshman at USC in '04 before running into trouble and transferring to UNLV. He has the physical tools to be a good NFL starter -- with improved discipline off the field and improved technique on it.
yes, i agree. we have a team of character guys, so we should take a chance on one guy who's suspect; though i doubt Mangini will. but if Wright shows (in interviews) that that stuff is water under the bridge, we should select him in hopes of FINALLY finding a feared CB. cheers
How many people here are considering Wright a better prospect than Houston at CB? I'm undescided on who has the better future, but right now I'd take Houston if theres a gun to my head. Still, Wright's been talked about quite a bit lately and he had a great workout at the combine. He looks like a playmaker when I look at his time at USC. Both look like they'll be fighting for the "best CB in the draft" label over the next 2 months.
Hasn't Houston sort of come out of nowhere? I'd prefer the guy who has slightly better size and is a known commodity. You have to look beyond all this hype. How has Matt Jones superstar turned out so far? -X-
Well not so much "out of nowhere" really. He faced some of the best WRs in college football this year and pretty much dominated them.
