Kerney voided his contract. Here is the link

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_y...ubYF?slug=ap-falcons-kerney&prov=ap&type=lgns

According to the article Kerney can not be tagged because his contract did not expire. I am not sure about this because I belive that Charles Grant did the same thing and Grant was taggd.

In any event, Kerney has the height for a 3-4 DE but might be better used at OLB. What do you guys think?

hell yeah i like him, but I don't know if he is a fit for the 3-4, and I don't think he'll wanna change his position.

He's not a good fit in the 3-4 anywhere. Plus, he wants to get paid BIG-TIME and he's over 30 years old.

Not a bad idea as a he seems like a good player and hard worker, but I'll be pulling for Adalius Thomas.

My understanding of Kerney is he is a big time pass rusher. What is his rep against the run? If we are going to be selective in free agency, we need the most bang for our buck (read A. Thomas).

Kerney is a pretty complete DE. His best asset is hes a high motor player. Hes always running around trying to make a play

Cool. If that's the case, then the only question is his 3-4 fit. I have no problem with his age and it's not my money so that doesn't concern me either. I think I still prefer A. Thomas but in Tangini I trust.

I like Kearny but then again as mentioned I dont know if he's a fit in the 3-4. I think he would be a beast at OLB if hes willing to move there.

its not 1800's when people die at 50 yrs old. as far as I know 30 yrs old isnt old.
guess we have to cut. chad,barton,ellis,coles,barret,kendall,etc... cause they all are hitting 30 or older........

When did I say that a player 30 or oveer is useless?

This guy is going to want big-time money from what I've heard. He doesn't fit the 3-4 well either. And a lot of players start going a little downhill once they hit the 30 year old range. Not all, but some do.

The guy has played at least 7 full seasons as a DE and half a season last year coming off an injury. I'm not saying that 30 year old players are useless, but I don't really want this guy.

I think he fits it perfectly. He has great size and great speed to play OLB in the 3-4. I think he's BETTER suited for the 3-4 than the 4-3.

His great size and speed are suited to playing a 4 man front. He is no 3-4 DE. Then again Vilma isn't a 3-4 LB either.

He's pretty injury prone..not a good fit for the 3-4 and he's going to want alot of money. If the team is gonna spend the money I mean go all the way and get Adelius Thomas...although whatever. I'm almost putting Lou Lamoriello like faith into our front office in that if they do something questionable they still get the benefit of the foubt.

  15. I don't see him as a good fit in the 3-4.

I was always under the impression that you need bigger, faster LBs to play the 3-4 outside, which to me was the main reason teams were making the switch (because players are getting bigger and faster). You need bigger LBs because they need to be stronger to take on the o-line more so than in a 4-3. And obviously, speed is an asset no matter what D your playing in. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting the defense, so you're probably right, but that's just always been my impression. Also, it seems like you always see players as being a DE/OLB tweener only in the 3-4. It's rare that they fit that tweener mold in a 4-3.

You make good points. The faster/bigger DEs are now playing in 3-4s but someone like Kerney I believe will have trouble in adapting as Vilma has , although I think Vilma's problems maybe size orientated.

I think alot of the problems that transitional DEs experience is getting used to the timing , if they're further back and slightly more spread takes time to get used to.
Also if they've never used that scheme , suddenly 'unlearning' everything your coach has got you to do in the last 10-12 years seems alien.
Maybe someone on here whos actually played DE or OLB in the 4-3 would be able to tell us more......

Even worse is that for some reason I thought I was in the Adalius Thomas thread haha. I was more lobbying for him than Kerney, although I would be happy with Kerney too. If it came down to the 2 of them playing the same position, hands down, gotta go with Thomas. My mistake on that one.
