When I was in BUffalo I sat beside a season ticket holder who hated Clements and during the game alot of fans around were down on him. They basically said that for the money he gets, he doesn't hit well and shies away from contact. I can;t remember all of the criticisms due to alcohol consumption, but now that he is on the market I wonder if he is worth pursuing. If this guy is a start CB according to many critics, should I take what the the criticisms as one-sided fan opinion, or be concerned that he is over-rated? Right now, Dyson and Clements at the corners sounds pretty good to me...
Some CB's are great due to their physical nature and tackling ability(I.E Bobby Taylor/ Ty Law) while other CB's are great due to their Coverage skills and athleticism(Aaron Glenn/Shawn Springs). Usually these 2 styles contrast one another in terms of strength and weaknesses. Clements happens to fall under more of the athletic coverage type. If Buffalo fans didn't like him...they mustve preferred a more physical type who may not be as good in pure man coverage.
Clements may be a little overrated, but he's still a very good CB. I'm fine if we go after him, but we'll probably have to overpay a bit to get him. Still, he'd solidify the position for years to come as he's still pretty young.
As I recall he is not overly tall or thick. i woould not expect im to be real physical if that is the case. Can he defend a pass? So few DBs actaully defense the pass these days. They just make tackles.
with samuel out of the question... he might really be our only option right now to make a splash in the free-agent market. From what i've seen when the jets played them, hes pretty good... no champ bailey, but he would certainly be an upgrade from what we have now. unfortunatly, we can't dictate the market in this instance. cb is primo position that almost any team would be happy to adress. no matter if he's overrated or if he's the real "shut-down corner" deal, the man is still going to get paid.
Clements is one of the better defending corners in the league; at least top 10 in that department. As said, not too physical, but he's more of a ballhawk regardless.
Im not trying to come off as a Ty Law fan because im not, but honestly? Who can tackle tackle LT in the open field one on one?
this is true, but not to down Law or anything, he looked rediculous on that play...thats one broken ankle im gonna remember for a while
I wouldnt mind signing Clements because he would be an upgrade, but this retard wants to be paid higher than Champ Bailey and hes no where near Champ Bailey's league. If you want to be paid more than Champ Bailey, you better be a Deion Sanders clone with tackling ability.
On NFL Total Access they asked him about that and he said he did his job because he was supposed to keep contain ont hat play and he did....and he seemed totally serious....way to pass the buck Ty.
Nate Clements is one heck of a tackler. I'm not sure where you guys are getting that he's not physical. He's also a great cover corner. While he doesnt get the INT's he's near the top of the league in passes defensed.
Clements is going to wind up signing a 40 million+ deal somewhere with 15 million+ up front. That's just too expensive to be a good buy.
yeah, Clements is a gifted athlete, but I can't imagine he'd play 100% if/when he gets a big payday. A shut-down CB would be great and CB depth is needed (please no more Drew Coleman!), but for what Clements would want/how he would play once he gets it....just not worth it, we can find a better bargain elsewhere
