Honestly, I wouldn't do it for the #6 pick. There is no way we can let Vilma go. He's our defensive leader. Give him a year to adjust (last season). He really reminds me of Donnie Edwards... We just need better DL play and a big ILB next to him (Eric Barton).
Carriker with the 6th pick? Why...... And if you give Vilma someone up front who can pressure, he will be solid.
I put Carriker in there because of the way he's flying up the draft board, I'm not saying he would be the pick, but if the first two are gone it's not out of the realm of possibility. Vilma is already "solid", but if the Jets feel they can get a cornerstone for their DL (the most important part of the 3-4 without question), as well as getting a power complement to their running game, they'll probably do it.
A line backer on the upslide in his career for a Mentally challenged injuried costume designer. love the wigs.no way!
I'd do a Portis and #6 for Vilma and #25 without thinking too hard about it. The Jets would be able to plug Alan Branch (maybe even trade down a few slots and get him) into the defense in the middle, move D-Rob outside for a season to see if he could be an impact 3-4 DE and significantly upgrade their offense at the cost of having to find a decent inside linebacker for the 3-4, preferably one with a bit more size. I like Vilma and I think he's a good player, but the only way that he is a high-impact player, given his size limitations, is if he puts together 150+ tackle seasons consistently. The season he had last year will never put the Jets over the top. Given that he looked really overmatched in the run defense a lot of the season I question whether or not he's going to be able to play in this 3-4 for the next half decade and be a star. Portis basically is a 3 to 4 year option, but one that is likely to produce extraordinary results given his track record. The Jet's rushing attack becomes instantly credible with Portis in it. He works best out of the shifting formations that are a feature of the Denver, and now Jets, systems. He was miscast in the grind it out straight ahead Redskins attack that basically tries to get 90% of it's yards on the ground between the tackles. Would I trade Vilma for Portis even-up? That's a tough call, because you're talking about acquiring 3 or 4 years of offensive excellence for 7 or 8 years of solid defensive play. But if the Jets are getting Branch and giving up the 25 in the same deal then it's pretty obvious where the value lies.
this would be horrible....i want to keep vilma...but if we had to trade him i like the betts and # 6 pick better
If we get #6 I think we will get Okoye not Branch.>>>> Branch is a way better fit for the 3-4, especially in the short term (and the long term is pretty damn good too).
I would request Mangini and Tannenbaum have their heads examined if they were to take Okoye over Branch.
vilma has carried the Jets on his back ever since his rookie year. i hope we all stop talking about this vilma trade because he may be the best MLB with Urlacher. No Vilma=No Playoffs
1. Thats not true, only QBs can carry teams on their back. No Chad = no Playoffs. 2. Vilma wasn't even our best defensive player last year. Not even close actually.
he carried the defense and chad did not win a game the team won games. Whens the last time Chad put the game in his own hands on the last drive of the game and scored.... NEVER. Either the defense, a receiver making a ridiculous catch or Curtis,Leon have won games. I like Chad and im happy with the way he plays but i believe that the defense has taken us to the playoffs and not Chad. who was the jets leader in your opinion just wondering. I think it was between Vilma and Thomas.
huh?!?!?!?!?! Running backs are a dime a dozen. I'd much rather go into the season with a Leon Washington/Cedric Houston tandem AND Vilma, than Portis (or Turner) and no Vilma...
There were 10 LB with more than 130 Tackles last year, Vilma wasn't one of them. There were only 7 running backs with over 1300 yards last year and one of them retired. The league is full of LB who impact games as much as Vilma. There are a handful of RB who impact games as much as a healthy Portis.
Vilma + 25 for Portis + Branch is a steal. We'd fill our DT slot and our RB. With our 2nd round picks we'd take a LB at 38 then a OT/OG at 57.
And there's always the chance that Quinn falls through to the 6, which would make the trade probably one of the most imbalanced in NFL history. Vilma is good not great.
