Im not one to ususally beef out stuff like this but I am really not feeling the signing. To me if they wanted to get someone to play next to Vilma in a 3-4 and actually have an impact, to be quite honest with you I would have rathered them being Sam Cowart back. I think he could help us the same way Roman Phifer help the Pats when he left us, especailly since Cowart played in a 3-4 before. If anything I hope this was a pickup to replace Wright on special teams in hopes he can make an impact on defense.
I doubt the Jets are seriously considering this guy as a starter... but obviously Mangini is familiar with this guy -- we'll have to wait and see. He could make an impact... so don't sleep on him just yet. Try to reserve judgement until we see the product on the field as well.
cowart is just done, he'll never be the same. if he wouldve showed the same spark in MIN as he did with us then yea.........but im sure vikes fans are sour about the cowart pick up....which just shows he cant consistently be on that "next level" he once was chatham.......doesnt excite me but i do remember seeing him run around as a ballhawk on special teams. plus at 6ft 4 250 he'll be more muscle next to barton and provide a tough presence next to Vilma , theyll prolly just blitz him alot and let vilma fly around.
I honestly think its a depth move and nothing more. Depending on how low the price goes, I'm quite intrigued by brining in a Cowart like you mentioned.
I don't get why everyone thinks this dude is going to be a starter... please educate me as to why you think he's going to be starting? How is this an upgrade?
I look at it differently - That if Eric Mangini is coming in and presumably teaching the entire defense a new language, he'd do well to bring a translator with him. Or something like that.
because, i remember reading something about, " giving him the chance to start" was a big role in his signing. so go figure
I'm sure that's possible. Either way, since he has a history with Mangini and experience over what the Jets want to do on D, he has a pretty significant leg up over any backup LB/special teams players the Jets could have added. After seeing the growing pains the Jets have had on D in the past when dealing with new schemes and/or major personel changes, I think it is important to have players that have a history with this type of D.
Im just going off of what is being thrown out there. The fact that he played in the system before, and that they are going to give him a shot at starting. It may just be the front office saying the right things to a newly signed player. I just a strong believer in you are what you are, until proven otherwise. So the fact that we signed him and he has been a backup player his whole career, than that is what he is here for because we think he does that well. No need to give the illusion that he is a contender for a starting spot.
Coaches always bring in guys they have coached before, Mangini will be no different. Maybe they view him as a special team guy, they're obviously familiar with his game.
Chatham is an effort guy who can make some plays. This is not a big signing by any means, just a depth signing with some upside. I think he's the kind of quality guy I'd like to have on roster. He might not have the most talent, but he's going to leave it all on the field, and that's an important guy to have around both vets and rookies. I don't think they're looking at him as a major contributor. He seems like a smart, effort guy, and I never mind adding those. -X-
Its alow risk high reward signing. Im not sure of the terms of the deal but from what I have heard his contract is primarily an incentive based one. I dont see how this could be a horrible move unless the Jets f.o. plan on him to be an automatic starter
I can clearly appreciate your concern. I think his main role will be to shore up special teams because due to the cuts of some of our players (Sowell comes to mind), we need a replacement part. He adds some depth to the linebacking core. He has the chance to work himself up through the system and could get playing time in special situations. After last year, I hope he doesn't get the nod because of injury. I see this as a good solid move that doesn't break the bank. It gives a mid-career player a chance to take it to the next level and fits the profile of guys that Mangini would target. I still think we will sign a couple more decent guys. Kitna may be one of them.
Solids on ST's, a nice depth guy. Perhaps use him in the nickel package with Vilma. I like the signing, seeing as how it only has upside, he gets paid like a ST's guy, if he makes an impact he gets more $$$. Im cool with that, I hope he earns more loot and has an impact, lets cheer um on.
my friend's a patriots fan and i asked him about chatham, and the first thing out of his mouth was, "he's a f'n beast on special teams"....that's all i needed to hear. It's a very good signing, and adds depth
If this is a signing for depth/ST help/translator then its all good, and I can except that. But the way is being presented is as if he has a legitament chance to start, which I personally do see. To sum it up really is just the fact that I dont like to be given a hambuger patty but have someone tell me its a Filet Mineon when I know its a hambuger patty.
i know what you mean, but i really don't get that impression....most people on here know what his role will be...still he'll get a chance to start
How can you be unhappy about this signing. Nobody here really knows what potential this guy has, we've never actually seem him play. Mangini has seen him everyday in practice and thinks he can contribute, that is good enough for me. If he sucks, he's on the bench and gone next year, nothing lost....
I would hope that every player on the roster has a chance to start this year. A chance would indicate that there is a possibility that they could be the best option at a particular position. If Chatham is one of the top 4 lb's in camp next year, then i want him to start. I hope all players on the roster are evaluated accordingly. Does anyone have a problem with that?
