Ive met Coles quite a few times and I can tell you he does think very highly of Smith. Theres no link, just a conversation I've had with him. Take it as you want.
Remember that up until the last 2 games of the year, he was the FIRST guy to get to the ball or opposing player. During the last 2 games, there was some wily CB or WR who was recently taken off the PS (I beleive) and making some great plays of his own- this guy's name escapes me though. Smith is truly a beast on ST.
But what does that have to do with whether he could become a big time receiver? I like Smith and agree that he has a huge upside as a WR, but I don't think that special teams ability is a valid point when making that case.
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show_permalink/year-in-review-brad-smith theres a quote from another article. but the one i was referring to q\was a news article.
The article is grading the draft class of last season as a whole right? Not the future or anything like that... So with last year, Brad was very good on special teams and that seems to be forgotten since most people remember him as a decoy, whether it's on punts or direct snaps, whatever... I don't know if he'll be a big-time receiver...But based on 06' alone, he did well when he was in, and very well on special teams.
He did nothing, but was a decoy. REALLY. Now, if your on the field, and the defense has to account for you everytime you step on the field, thats a BIT more than doing nothing... Our entire draft class CONTRIBUTED. More than any draft class made an IMMEDIATE impact as a whole than any draft I can remember, save the draft we had 4 first rounders. I love the bashing of our own TALENT going on here... Ellis " Watcha mean Heaven's Full?!?!?!?!?! " - Rodney Dangerfield
I havent seen him prove his good hands yet. They seemed to use him more as a screen pass type of play. They didnt really trust him going across the middle on third downs.
