According to Cimini's blog, Barrett was hurt all year and recently had surgery for a sports hernia. With his salary next year he predicts he may be a salary cap casualty. With our problems in the D-backfield I think it's more likely they look to restructure him (assuming he is healthy), he is a solid number 2/3 CB when healthy. Who knows... http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/archives/2007/02/jets_could_send_barrett_packin.php Jets Might Pass on Barrett With only two weeks until the start of free agency, the Jets have many personnel decisions to make. One of those decisions involves CB David Barrett, whose hefty base salary ($3.6 million in 2007) makes him a possible salary-cap casualty. Barrett’s health could be a factor. The Daily News learned today that Barrett, who played hurt for almost the entire 2006 season, underwent surgery after the season to repair a sports hernia. Barrett is expected to be fine by training camp in July, but he likely will be limited throughout the off-season program and in the minicamps. Chances are, the Jets will approach Barrett before free agency, asking that he take a pay cut or restructure his contract. Bottom line: His status is very much up in the air. The Jets, of course, made no mention of Barrett’s surgery. Eric Mangini’s policy on injuries is to provide as little information as possible, which sometimes hurts the player. Throughout the season, Barrett’s injury was listed as a “hip” on the weekly report submitted to the league. A hip? Technically, a sports hernia affects the lower abdominal wall, which is close to the hip. In reality, we know that listing it as a hip injury is blatant deception. Initially, Barrett’s injury was believed to be a pulled groin muscle, causing him to miss a lot of training camp. He took some heat for taking so long to rehab the injury - injuries are frowned upon in Mangini’s kingdom - but those people backed off when it was diagnosed as a sports hernia, an incredibly painful injury. Remarkably, Barrett missed only three games. He never said a word, lest he be fined by Mangini’s injury police, and he managed to make some big plays down the home stretch. He had an interception in a critical win at Minnesota, forced a game-changing fumble in the playoff-clinching win against Oakland and broke up two passes in the wild-card loss to the Patriots. Now that people know the exact nature of Barrett’s injury, maybe they won’t be so hard on him. When healthy, he’s a solid corner who makes plays on the ball - 10 interceptions in three seasons. With only one other proven corner on the roster (Andre Dyson), the Jets still need a player like Barrett. Now it comes down to money and health. Barrett deserves a break. In 2005, he played with a serious eye injury, risking permanent damage. In 2006, he somehow played with a sports hernia. That kind of toughness is priceless. No matter what happens with Barrett, the Jets will be in the cornerback market. Everyone in the league expects them to make a run at Patriots CB Asante Samuel, who, along with the Bills CB Nate Clements, will be among the most coveted free agents. But I have a hard time envisioning the Jets doling out a $15 million signing bonus for a non-quarterback. We’ll see. * * * By the way, the Jets still haven’t made any announcements regarding Brian Daboll, who is expected to join them after seven seasons with the Patriots. Come to think of it, the Jets still haven’t officially announced the recent hirings of Dan Quinn (defensive line), Mike MacIntyre (secondary) and Sal Alosi (strength and conditioning). Things always get a little weird in the Hofstra bunker this time of year.
Barret has always been a solid cornerback for us. Plays the deep ball really well, altho sometimes he seems too far off the receiver and they catch passes in front of him. However, he always seems to make a play.
Wow, much respect for Barrett, however he may feel that having put his body on the line for the Jets the past two years he's entitled to the money in his contract as a pay-back. That would result in his being cut.
Barrett, while not the best, could start for at least half of the NFL teams. I always thought he was/is a good CB.
Fucked up league where John Abraham gets rewarded for being a pussy and David Barrett might get penalized for playing hurt, as Chad Pennington was.
Barrett should come back......this all makes sense now, with him not playing alot last year, he was hurt i guess. Honestly he is pretty good, and I would not be worried if he and Dyson are the starting cb's next year, as long as we improve our front 7 greatly, which we would have most likely if we do not get a new CB.
I hope we keep Barrett, he's been solid when healthy. As for not announcing the coach signings, I would have to guess that Mangini is waiting until he has a complete coaching staff and just announce them all at once like he did last year.
That 3.6 million base makes this an interesting FO decision. My guess is he's gone. We've already got a talented injury-risk CB, Dyson. Look for the Jets to pick a "value" FA up and dump Barrett.
He's a good 2nd corner if you have a fast guy to cover the other team's burner. I thought he was in Mangini's doghouse when he played so little, and in an on-again off-again fashion, despite the Jet's obvious problems at CB. This explains a lot. It would probably be a very good move to get him to restructure a bit and come back. I wouldn't be looking to hammer him if I was the Jets. At least not unless they pick up a good CB prospect on the first day. And that's not the Pat's style. They like 2nd day defensive backs.
I'd prefer they restructure him and keep him. He's a solid CB, and since I don't see them going out and signing one of the big CBs (Samuel, Clements, etc.), it doesn't make sense to cut him.
i'm a fan of barrett as well...but i would like him to take a pay cut and keep him...i still say we sign either clements or samuel...then we'd be deep.. with sameuls/clement, dyson, barrett, miller and i still say we draft one in the first 4 rounds
The common wisdom at the moment is that Samuel will be franchised and Clements will see his price go through the roof as a result. I don't see either of those guys as being in the Champ Bailey vicinity in terms of talent and impact so I really don't want to payout a huge contract to get them. It'd be much cheaper to keep Barrett to play opposite Dyson even if Barrett does not restructure. And with Coleman and Miller as the developmental guys it's quite possible that the Jets already have a future starting CB on the roster.
People rip Barrett all the time on this board. I think he's a solid player and I want him on this team. He may not be a #1 CB but he's a legit #2 for us.
i'm saying they are both #2 corners...and for our D to blitz more and be more aggressive...we need a # 1 corner...we have alot of money so i say either this year or next we got a #1 corner
