During their Tenure I loved Joe Douglas the most, I thought he was great. Hindsight is different obviously but I was way higher on Joe D after the big draft then I've ever felt about Moug.
I'm not as optimistic about Davis as you--37 years old, 2yr-22m Compare Alex Anzalone--very good LB--31 years old, 2yr-17mm Leo Chanel--looked great in KC--only 25 yrs old--3yr--25mm--I would have signed Leo and Alex if I could given the possibility of playing a base 3-4. Here are your 2 inside guys and they still have gas in the tank especially Chenel.
Chanel would have been a great pickup but again we always forget that the player has to want to play here. Demario Davis even at age 37 is better than Anzalone. Will you get more time out of the latter? Yeah probably but he’s on a two-year deal. Not out of the question that we still get two more years out of Davis. And I also wouldn’t be shocked if the plan is to have a new draft pick in that spot come next year anyway. That signing was always going to be a bridge signing.
Those are good points. My read on their targeting Davis is largely about culture-building and having a dependable leader on defense who is still playing at a high level. A lack of that last year was a major issue and sounds like Sherwood was a huge disappointment in those departments. I can support it, but they really will need some future planning at ILB (and possibly present because I'm skeptical about Sherwood in a 3-4 alignment.
Agree he’s a bridge, and I do think part of the signing was to help build a better culture. But I do worry that he can fall off a cliff at any time…sure he may have another great year left but I think the chances of that at his age at that position are not better than 50/50.
