He has been on defensive staffs of 5 different teams even though he's only 36. that means he's seen a variety of schemes and concepts.
2018-2020 he was with the Ravens as a defensive analyst and assistant under Wink when those defenses were destroying the league. Probably not a coincidence considering the style Glenn wants to play and us being so high on Wink. After that he was in Detroit for three years as an assistant and position coach where Glenn ran a defense that he equated to Wink's style. Again... not a coincidence. https://x.com/Willpa11/status/2016545769914806671?s=20 Refer to that tweet for what the Detroit defense did under Glenn when accounting for turnovers and sacks, not just yards and points allowed. Couple that with Duker playing a big role in the development of Joseph (4 picks rookie year under Duker as DB coach) and Branch (3 picks as a rookie under Duker as S coach) and you can see where there's a path for success. Will it happen? Probably not. We need a ton of talent regardless of who is coaching and I don't think the timeline of adding top tier guys lines up with the leash this coaching staff has. If Anzalone isn't a Jet this year I'd be shocked.
well we knew that no one of real consequence or name was going to come here to be a DC who doesn't call plays for a lame duck coach. So in the end, I haven't been getting all that fired up about this whole search, as I don't think it moves the needle much either up or down. I do like that Glenn won't have the fucking excuse of being able to say it was Wilks' defense not mine. So from that standpoint I am ok with it. Never heard of Duker honestly, so no real opinion of him other than the Miami D was mediocre...better than our 31st ranking and no picks, so there's that I guess. But the Dolphins D was bottom third also. So slight upgrade but nothing to write home about really. It's just such an embarrassing look for Woody and Glenn and the Jets in general. The whole world saw that NOBOBY, that is, no REAL candidate for open DC roles, was going to even talk to this shitshow. Chew on THAT, Woody you fuck!
I just don't see how the defense could be any worse than last year under Wilks. Glenn may not be great, but he did have a solid year in Detroit a year ago calling plays. Reich while underwhelming hire and no longer term potential like Tanner, might be better short term than Tanner for a team without a QB. He has vast QB background and managed to make scrubs like Brissett and Wentz look decent at times. We should be better than last year, especially with the picks and CAP room. It seems like Glenn might be aiming for a 5-6 win season to sell to Woody as improvement to keep him on. And I would not be surprised if Simpson is a Jet if he is there at 16. Glenn would sit him and then sell this 5-6 win season plus young QB for 2027 as a reason to continue.
I don’t think it’s really as dramatically bad as you’re making it out to be. Glenn is obviously taking ownership of the defense, for better or worse. He wasn’t going to hire a DC that he clashed with and didn’t have final say over schemes and game plans and stuff. He was the defensive passing game coordinator on a middle of the road defense that’s getting a crack here. You can’t uncover Jesse Minter’s if you don’t turn over some rocks and try to get guys like this.
This is the kind of guy you give a shot to. He's been a part of some really successful staffs and was involved in the development of upper echelon guys. I don't hate the hire at all and I don't hate the gameplan of Glenn calling the plays. My concern is the amount of talent we have to add and how little time this staff is going to have to make it all work.
I think you nailed it…Glenn is desperate…he knows he’s on the hot seat, so he’ll call the defense himself (I like putting your money where your mouth is) and I understand the logic with Reich…seasoned, has had success as an OC, and should be experienced enough that Glenn can let him really be the “HC of the offense”. I get the logic. I do think he’s aiming for what you say…needs to show improvement to keep his job and sell Woody on something like, “see Woody? The plan is working!”
What is the over under for interceptions next year ? I'll put it at 3. Not to mention, now that he has to call the defense. How many wasted timeouts will be burned and how bad will we do at clock management ?
Those that expect a complete collapse will be disappointed. No one but fans is playing the tank game.
Agree, the team should be better overall as long as Glenn completely concedes the offense to Reich. I mean stays out of 2 minute, clock management, 4th down/TO decisions etc. If Glenn coaches the defense which he has proven meh at best at we should have a meh at best defense and atleast a serviceable offense. I'm thinking 4-6 wins easy if this is how it falls. Obvious problem with this is 1: We need a high pick and 2: Gives Glenn the best chance at year 3.
So he's less than meh? Stats don't show him better than meh, definitely worse than meh if you avg all 4 years.
