That is not a "report"; it is an opinion. What makes this one guy's opinion so important?

Another 1st time defensive HC? No way. Besides Glenn just bitched many times now how Wilks ran Wilks' system. Even at the press conference with Mooge he mentioned again that they ran the system Wilks ran for the 49ers. Wilks actually had good defense for the 49ers. So, I am not really sure if it is because of Shanahan input that it was better, and here Glenn made some different changes that didn't help, but it sure worked a lot worse for Glenn than it did for Shanahan, even though for Wilks the result was similar. :)

The bottom line is: no more other systems please. Run your own system, like Bob did. Bob did find a guy to call his system in Ulbrich, but I am not sure a person of the caliber you are saying is coming here to call Glenn's system. These guys would be better off coming to some offensive coach to be basically HC of the defense rather than 1 year stay for this atrocious lame duck defensive coach.

Besides, after such spectacular failure, why not just call it yourself? Call the defense yourself and make yourself useful. I cannot watch this guy standing on the sidelines anymore doing nothing while we get blown out again and again and again and again and aga...

Yet again you quote one of my posts without any clue or context. Someone quoted the article that we were linked to Martindale, I provided that quote to show it was an opinion, not an actual link. My god you’re insufferable.

What you're leaving out of this is that I replied to you with something that was more than an opinion then you didn't respond.

At this point, as I heard on NFL on Sirius this morning, there have been "reports" or "rumors," depending on what you care to think or believe, that there have been as many as 8 or 9 teams reach out about Harbaugh. Now, if my aging brain can keep up, that's 2 or 3 more teams, who currently have HC's, that might be kicking the tires. Since we are now in our normal off-season mode of Unicorns, bullshit and hope, I'm going to HOPE Woody got slapped around by his wife last night, found the fountain of football sanity or something and is kicking the tires. Look, I DID say Unicorns here...

At this point, they could bring back Buddy Ryan, Wade Phillips, insert name here and I'm basically of the opinion that, as long as Glenn is the HC, it all means Jack and his good buddy Shit. I would LOVE to be wrong about this but, when it comes to my gut feelings over the course of my lifetime, I'm batting closer to 85% correct. But that does leave 15% for Hell to freeze over (if you believe in such things), pigs to fly or the Dodo to make a comeback. Personally, not holding my breath that any of it matters.

I’m sorry, I do have a life beyond this forum. I mean, ok some guy said it’s mutual on a podcast. I acknowledge that. I still don’t believe he’s coming here. My suspicion is we’re going to remove the interim tag from Chris Harris and Glenn is taking over playcalling duties.

Honestly, realistically this may be the best case scenario. Or bring in some young up and comer from somewhere. Last thing we need is Wink, who will call his own system. We just did that with Wilks. How did Wink do last year btw? I heard he went to Michigan right after the NFL, which had crap defense and got fired there too.

I don't want Wilks 2.0. Glenn needs to man the fuck up and take ownership of his own defense. Whether Chris or some other young guy he will bring in no one heard of is less relevant. Heck, bring some guy from Detroit and call him a DC for all I care. But own the defense, do something for fucks sake.

Why are you comparing this to Wilks? He had a completely different defensive philosophy than Glenn did in Detroit. He specified what he was looking for in the next DC and what he described lines up perfectly with Martindale's scheme. This isn't even close to a Wilks situation.

If you watched Michigan you'd know their defense wasn't crap... they were above average but struggled against elite teams... but I also don't blame anyone for not being on top of college football. So a quick Google of the numbers for Michigan's defense in 2025...

    Points Allowed: 12th (17.2 PPG).
Total Yards Allowed: 14th (304.3 YPG).
    Points Per Play: 12th (0.252).
    Yards Per Play: 10th (4.5).
    Tackling: 3rd (PFF)

I checked out some Michigan websites and the consensus is Wink did a good job but he tried to bring an NFL style defense (which was attractive for recruiting) and that didn't work with college kids that weren't ready to go pro. They weren't good enough to play man (which does scare me a bit if he were here) but the pressure was there. So it's not really fair to say the defense was crap and he also didn't get fired, he wasn't retained after the head coach was fired which is not the same thing.

All this being said... I don't even have him as my top candidate. It seems like a realistic one and a good one. It just feels like we're saying things that aren't true so that if it does happen we can go "oh Glenn hired someone who sucks we can't get a real candidate he should have just called plays if he wanted to be a real coach".

For the record I don’t want Martindale. I’m not saying he should call his own plays, I’m saying that many candidates will view the situation he’s in and decide not to come here. It is the least attractive position based on our defensive roster, and by far the least attractive position based on stability. Looking through the eyes of potential candidates I don’t see how you can’t see that. If I’m a promising DB/LB/DL coach with eyes on becoming a DC I would be extremely hesitant coming to the Jets with Glenn.

I did say I head about it, but now that you are throwing numbers at me, let's take a look how he actually did. https://www.espn.com/college-footba...table/passing/sort/totalPointsPerGame/dir/asc

20 ppg allowed, not 17. Did you look at Western Michigan by any chance? LOL.

Looks like 20 ppg before that too. I looked at a few years before that by others, and it was less than that - 10, 16, 17, etc... They conceded more comparing to previous years, and he did not "get retained". Also, Giants didn't retain him either a year before. That's the part I compared about Wilks, not the exact styles. I would not call his last two stints a success.

Either way, as I already said, I want Glenn to call the defense or get a guy to do what Brick did for Bob, which is to call his defense. Wink seems like an established guy who would call his own. I want Glenn to call his.

That's how YOU look at it. A guy on the internet.

A promising young coach takes an opportunity to show what they can do. Especially if you believe in yourself. Sherwood was an all-pro, Quincy was an all-pro (but may be gone), Stephens has been good, AZ was promising, Briggs is already on the higher end of DTs, JJ and WMD have very clear physical talent that a good DC can unlock like Ubrich did before he was forced to be HC. Take away Sherwood and Quincy, you still have a ton of money and picks that will absolutely go into the defense. Of course this isn't the best job available but anyone who has an ounce of respect and confidence in themselves will consider the job.

You care far too much about Glenn's job security. If he gets fired the new DC could very well take over. And if he gets let go by the next coach he will have a year of tape on his resume to get himself other jobs.

I feel like I have to reiterate that this is NOT the best DC job out there, but the notion that no one will want it for the reasons you pointed out just isn't logical anywhere other than an internet message board.

For whatever reason, the numbers I was looking at didn't include the Big Ten title game or Bowl Game which adds up considering the consensus amongst Michigan fans on the internet is the defense was great but struggled against elite teams. So yes, the numbers and rankings look a little different regular season compared to postseason. Two points remain:

    -He wasn't fired
-He runs exactly what Glenn described so I dont know what the problem is with Wink calling it instead of Glenn. This will be the exact same philosophy. It's exactly what Brick did for Saleh.

    Actually a third important point:

-I still have Harris and Leonhard above him.

I am with @NJJets on this one. I think these guys will have better options.

On Wink, when you "do not retain" "part ways" whatever you want to call it while his defenses allowed more points than before him, and also fired by the Giants before that, it does not give me any confidence. But if Wink runs the exact system Glenn does, a la Bob/Ulbrich, it's OK.

But will it be the same exact system? I mean it is similar, but Wink is an established guy, used to basically being a HC of the defense. At least that was my understanding, and a big reason Daboll fired him as they clashed. I want Glenn to be the guy in full control of the defense, like Bob was. Brick just called plays that Bob basically drew up and prepared for him. Which is why you saw a big drop off when Bob left. I really want Glenn to call plays, at least try to give us what he did in Detroit's last year.

Getting fired and not being retained are definitely two separate things. Getting fired means you were pinpointed as someone that was part of the problem, not being retained when the head coach is fired means they're wiping everything clean. And he also wasn't fired by the Giants. He cursed out Daboll and quit.

Again on Glenn/Wink... Glenn ran a man system that blitzed, Wink runs a man system that uses exotic looks to create confusion and pressure. They have the exact same philosophy. If you wanna get down to like play design, playcalling, etc. well I dunno, that just seems tedious to me and like you're looking for reasons to not like it before it even happens.

Personally, I’m not getting too worked up over this…for a couple of reasons…

First, is it among the better opportunities for DCs right now? Probably not due to the perceived instability and the talent level…that just seems kind of obvious to me…I’d assume that the 7 teams now looking for an HC will almost certainly also bring in a new DC along with him, and those opportunities would likely be more stable

but still, we DO have a bunch of cap space and draft picks that I assume will be part of the interview conversations in terms of acquiring more talent, and then I do think good coaches are confident enough to show that THEY can be the man to fix it. And sure, if they are a bit more experienced, there is also a good chance they can be in consideration for the Interim HC job if it goes south. Not that that always leads to the full time job (in fact I think it hardly ever does), but it IS something to consider if they are really worried about it.

So while I think any of the top DC candidates may have better options (likely), I still think we’ll find somebody to do it.

However, my main reason is that in the end, as long as AG is still here calling the shots, I don’t think it’ll make much difference for us honestly…from what I saw this year, I just think we need SO much more than a new DC to fix this mess. I think we need a house cleaning of the entire coaching staff outside of Banjo.

Until that happens, I will expect to suck next year, no matter what QB or DC or QB coach we bring in…I just think Glenn is clueless and out of his depth

Honest question…why are you so up on having Glenn call the plays? It’s not like his defenses in Detroit were all that. They were mostly mediocre.

I think he has a hard enough time managing the game as is based on his many stupid in game decisions…having him call the defense will only make that harder.

Now, if you are taking the track of wanting to give him some rope to hang himself with, then ok I kind of get it, but for me, I don’t care that he calls plays or not that much

I didn’t say no one would want it. I said most candidates who value job security and longevity in their career will probably shy away from taking this role. This happens all the time, 2 years ago Ben Johnson turned down multiple opportunities to interview because he wanted to wait for the right fit. In today’s day and age good candidates are being selective. And with all due respect don’t sit there dismissing my pov being how “I view things” when your pov is no different. You are also just a guy on the internet, your opinion holds no more value than mine.

Its mind blowing how stupid this post is.

I dont know if you follow current events, but Michigan's head football coach was fired for banging a staffer. Try reading a newspaper.

There's a weird thing happening here where some people think the only way Glenn can "prove" his value as a coach is to call defensive plays. Which makes absolutely no sense to me especially when the same people calling for that are the ones that thing he's dumb as a box of rocks. There's context missing in the Lions defensive rankings though... yes mediocre, but started off God awful and despite having more injuries year over year, the defense improved and his last year they were top 10 in points allowed while also being top 10 in DVOA which the kids really like to talk about these days. And that being said, I DON'T want Glenn calling plays.

I don't see it with Martindale. The guy is older, has been out of the league, is unemployed, I imagine he'd take a coordinator position with anyone that offers. Lets not act like he's got a huge list of suitors.

The only way I see him turning down the Jets is if Harbaugh wants him as his DC but it sounds like they had a falling out anyway
