I haven't seen that painting in what must be at least 40 years, but I remember it vividly - it was the cover of Volume 14 ("The Roosevelt Era") of the 16-volume The American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States. It is a water color that was being painted by Elizabeth Shoumatoff over lunch on April 12, 1945 when FDR exclaimed "I have a terrific headache" and slumped over in his chair. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 3:35 PM that afternoon. I read those American Heritage History volumes cover-to-cover dozens of times from 1963 (when it came out and my parents bought it) to 1972 (when I graduated from high school), since they were kept in my room.
Best president in US history. Sad that people don't see all the mistakes that Hoover made and relate them to the SAME decisions that are being made today that could lead us right back down that road to another depression.
