I think you are wrong. And this year, with a Line coordinator that is half decent, we are going to see great improvements. Carson big contribution (cough) was to make the entire line play below their capabilities.
just a little tad bit of info about him, who IMO will make a great depth signing. "Known for his toughness, he missed just one game in that stretch, the Week 9 matchup this past season against the Detroit Lions, because of a wrist injury. He told ESPN after the season that he also played the second half of last season with a torn pectoral muscle. He was voted as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2024. The move reunites Myers, a second-round pick in 2021 out of Ohio State, with his former Buckeyes teammate Justin Fields, who agreed to a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets earlier this week." I'm sure he can hold his own if called to duty. Great price, great depth.
We are not going to fix all the short comings in one season, particularly in a year where we suck up the AR full cap, so IMO the focus of the draft will be on DL, OL, TE and WR while in free agency I expect a couple of back up players in positions of need and may be another starting safety and a WR 2. Next year the picture will be much clearer regarding contracts extensions and core players to keep.
That is a great depth signing! Now I will not pretend I am familiar with his career, but GB OL seemed pretty solid, and he is a young multi year starter. Was one of the alternates of last Pro Bowl. I suspected pretty low on that list, but still... for 3.5 mil we got solid IOL depth. Why not?
You prefer Schweitzer? The guy who can't even finish a game? We just signed a back up to Tipp for 3.5 mil, who is still young and actually durable plus has significant starting experience. He even made a pro bowl alternate last year. Not sure if this counts for anything, but clearly someone thinks he is good to counter balance PFF lol. It's pretty clearly a good depth move and a big upgrade over Schweitzer.
I dunno, if you’re good you probably don’t go from 3 year starter to settling for a backup role on day 3 of free agency.
You never know. Crazier things have happened. A lot of guys take a 1 year prove it deal. It appears he played though an injury last year. Maybe he thinks if he can get healthy and get some PT he can score a big contract next year or even beat out Tipp straight up, plus there is Ohio St connection. Also, I am not saying he is good, but a solid back-up, who is better than absolute scrub we had, who could not even last a game. It's definitely a good depth move on the cheap.
I guess it’s just hard for me to care about backup centers when we have no DL, TE, WR and are seemingly not even attempting to add them.
You did not like the scrubs we signed on the DL? The draft is rich in DL and TE. I think Mooge wants to score there. We'll see. As far as WR, we do have to do something, I am just not sure what we can get in free agency. But in the free agency Darius Slayton, who is even worse then Lazard just got 3 year 36 mil dollar deal. We might as well just keep Lazard for 1 year 11 mil than try to upgrade via free agency. WR may be something we will handle via trade also with a late round pick. Also, do not underestimate the importance of IOL depth. Remember the injuries from 2 and 3 years ago? Myers was a really good depth move for practically nothing.
Again I can’t get myself jacked up about a one year bad backup center when we probably have one of the least competitive rosters in the league.
He is not a bad back-up center, he is a bad starting C. But he is a good durable back-up. And he may not even be as bad a starter as you think. Still he is a back-up here, and this was a need. You don't need to be jacked up, but this was a hole we had, and Mooge did a good job filling it. Free agency just started. We need to fill out one hole at a time. There is no point to complain when you filled a hole with a decent option because there are other holes. Let's see what happens going forward. The new league year literally just started several hours ago, there is still time.
All I said is I can’t get jacked up about it when we have one of the least competitive rosters in the league and he’s graded out as a bad player his entire three year tenure as a center in this league. I’d argue I feel no feelings about it, not complaining about it.
I got a call from Florham Park telling me the Jets are indeed attempting to fill all their holes, including those you mentioned. Do you want me to have you added to the phone chain so you don't need to rely only on how things seem to you?
