I don’t think money matters. They can work their way around the cap. The issue is if Rodgers can be a team player and leader, plus if he can get along with Wilson. That’s my problem with him returning. Yeah, if he can get on board with the new vision, I guess it could work. He would also have to stay healthy, which he hasn’t been able to do for 3 straight seasons.
He WAS good at that. There's a limit to how many times you can override your OC's gameplan without there being some friction. Too many delay of game flags because the wrong personnel packages were on the field. Rodgers changed a lot of plays that Downing/Hackett called which resulted in pretty decent stats. What happens if and when Rodgers starts to go into "Legend" mode and does his own thing? Will Glenn get in his ass or do like Saleh and excuse it. How much control will the Legend have is the overriding question. Probably one that kept more qualified candidates from even considering the Jets especially with Woody Dumbfck still meddling.
He's a garbage human being but OK, not everyone is a saint--we just want to win--but he's a horrible teammate. Do you want another season of going on the Tank Top Show and blaming everyone when he's supposed to be the leader? He also wastes the talent of G. Wilson by not being able to throw more than 15 yards.
The interesting part about the Rodgers debate is that if the Jets open up the season 2-0 or 3-0 next year all the negativity goes away instantly. I dont blame people for having a bad stench but it was the best QB play since Fitzpatrick in 2015. Replicate it on a team with a real head coach, a kicker that can make fgs, and a defense that can get a stop and the Jets are probably on there way to the playoffs.
My biggest concern would be that rodgers personality/ perceived authority could completely ruin a new staff.
If Wilkis can make defense better and Glenn changes the culture of the locker room and brings accountability, I don't have any problem with Rodgers playing another year. His QB performance was enough to make the playoffs this year if defense did their part and kicker could kick the expected field goals.
Maybe I'm being optimistic, but I think Rodgers ego could help the JETS in this case. Glen really has no ties to him, and wasn't the one that recruited him, blowing smoke up his ass.... "We want you as part of this team, but we're doing my way. We're a TEAM, and we're going to WIN as a TEAM...." So he either retires* (after the worst season of his career) or he finishes his career on the bench if he doesn't want to fall in line. I doubt he wants either as the final chapter of his career.. * I'm not going to pretend to know the financial end, but I'm assuming him retiring is more beneficial to the JETS than releasing him?
Who’s his RT? Who’s his WR’s? Are we upgrading either G position or C? How do you manage to replace any of them with the cap number he poses? Even if we manage a 3-0 start in your scenario how long do you think the guy is gonna stay upright and healthy? Who replaces him when he gets hurt? And hpw much further down the line do you want to cripple the team against the cap by restructuring him to make signing any FA possible? Rodgers’ positives do not outweigh the consequences. We have an opportunity to swallow a massive pill this year and be done with it so 2026 is a fresh start with a ton of cap. That’s exactly what we need, not more half measure efforts with old vets. We need to stockpile draft picks and start actually hitting on them and fill this team up with young talent. Then in 2026 we need to draft our QB. Meantime suck it up with Tyrod and another vet like Brissett or Winston for a season. If we are surprisingly good next year it should be behind a group of young hungry players eager to show out for a coach that’s supposedly such a good leader.
Not to mention if he is competitive he has so much motivation for redemption. Also the bar is lower. I think redemption would be a winning season and a playoff game. Just end the playoffs drought and he can leave here on top.
Or how about we find out on year one how good Aaron Glenn is by bringing Rodgers back. Rather than go through the process of tanking, drafting a QB in 2026 then maybe by 2027 or 2028 we find out if Glenn can coach or not. Id rather find out now then go through another Wilson/Saleh rebuild that needs more time. If Glenn is a good coach then this team should win next year. The costlier option is getting rid of Rodgers and then we find out in 3-4 years that Glenn can't coach.
AR was give far to much latitude under the past administration(s) and that likely will not be the case with this new regime. For me the part I underlined means that in all probhe will treat AR like any other player and that is what this prima donna needs. I'm okay with bringing Rodgers back as long as behaves like every other league average QB, which is what he is and all he's ever been for the Jets. No McAfee, no Egypt vacations, and no playing GM.
Bingo! The Jets aren't hiring Aaron Glenn to be DC. They desperately need discipline and accountability and the hope is that Aaron Glenn brings that leadership.
