It’s extremely flawed but the percentage of minority coaches has increased since its implementation. So they are getting the desired results. As a minority myself, I rather the diversity over the prior good old boy network of f retreads but that’s just me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Flores coming with Mccown is really ideal. Flores is strict but Mccown could offset some of it. I think the idea of bringing them together would be great.
I would hate to have him in the building, then lose him & he becomes what everyone thinks he will become somewhere else. 14 year drought what’s a couple more?
I rather have the best possible head coach over diversity. I dont care what color the coach is, whoever is the best is who I want.
True but if he is in the building and gets hired it means he did a good job here with Flores. (Most of the top canidates are on the top teams so if that means the Jets are a top team then sign me up).
That's true he did play for a lot more teams. I dont know if that helps him fill in a staff though. During the interview that would have to be the main question, who he intends to bring in as coordinators. Ideally he would have a plan for an experienced guy he can lean on. Like Sean McVay did with the Rams bringing in Wade Phillips initially to coach the defense. (but even McVay had coordinator experience himself)
They don't have a Rooney rule in NBA or MLB though and plenty of minority coaches are hired. More in fact! Believe it or not but some owners dont want to hire guys that look like them, especially the self-made types that can recognize the value in diversity without a weird rule requiring them to perform interviews based on race
LMAO imagine thinking this logic in a league that is majority minorities. Geez. Any team that is hiring coaches based on race rather picking the best candidate will be punished by not optimizing there success.
I also think the relatively new addition of draft pick compensation HURTS minority candidates. Imagine if the Jets wanted a black assistant from the Buffalo Bills to be their next coach. They would have to consider that the Bills, a division rival, would get 3 years worth of additional draft picks from the league if they made that move. or they could hire a similar resumed white guy and not have to worry about the Bills getting some extra picks
Since the Rooney Rule has been implemented 21 years ago 2 minority head coaches have won Super Bowls (Dungy and Tomlin) despite last season having 9 of the 32 head coaching spots as minorities. Like I said I would hire the best candidate, not hire someone to push diversity.
The reason why it was needed in the NFL was because number of minority head coaches was disproportionate to the number of minorities playing the sport. If the numbers weren’t so off kilter, they wouldn’t have needed the rule. Like I said before it’s flawed AF but I don’t believe in letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. There’s no limit on interviews so it’s not hurting anyone except the pride & dignity of the token minorities getting interviewed. On the positive side, guys who would have ordinarily not get a look are getting the opportunity to in front of owners and shoot their shot. The good outweighs the bad IMO. ♂️
I am starting to arrive as the same conclusion. Given the shitty list, Brady #1 for me, and remarkably McCown #2. Glenn would have to be #3 on that list, assuming Vrabel is a goner. The guy worked for every team and has tons of connections. He was Sam's QB coach when Sam busted out. Also, it seems like Houston wanted to hire him as their HC, which ultimately went to Smith, but he was right up there, not just an interview, but a finalist, and that is without any experience. And we can't really argue Houston doesn't know what it is doing anymore. Basically everyone says the guy is HC material, kind of the same we hear about Glenn, but on the offensive side. What concerns me is lack of Coordinator experience, but given other choices, he is high on the list. Let me shit on Flores just a little, then I will get to the point. Even Fitz, former player, just came out and bashed Flores, it is not just Tua. What I see is that when he is on top, he does not get along with anyone, not his coaching staff, not his players, not his owner, not his mentor, not other teams. This is the last guy we want to be a leader of the whole operation here. Now, you think Josh would be a great OC. But if he is a great OC, why not just make him a HC? He is being talked about a HC in multiple circles and was already a finalist once for the job. Everyone is talking about his connections, great leadership skills, ability to work well with everyone. So, if you think he will be a good OC, just make him a HC and hire another veteran DC, like say Eberflus or someone else. This way you won't lose him after he has one good season as OC the way Vrabel lost MLF.
The rule doesn’t say you have to hire minorities just give them interviews. What does black coaches winning Super Bowls have to do w/ getting an opportunity to interview?
