Coaches. Look at Denver now. Sean Payton even got the owner to eat that HUGE Russell Wilson mistake/contract. This ties into the owner, but we need an established respected HC who has no problem saying FU to Woody. And Woody will take it from that coach if the team wins. This is the only way. Parcells, Rex for a time, (Once Woody got him to take on Tebow it was over) you get the picture. No more patchwork bullshit. No more inexperienced HC experiments. Won't work in NY. Doesn't seem to work for the Giants either.
Coaching The poor play-calling on offense has cost us several wins and it also led directly to Saleh getting sacked which in turn led to a collapse on the defensive side of the ball as well. Average PPG in 2024 for a team is 22.5 - we have hit the average score just 3 times this year and only gone above 25 once (and still lost). The D has massively underperformed - only one team (Vegas) has a worse average in terms of takeaways per game. If we had even average coaches calling the shots I think we would be 8-3 right now rather than 3-8.
Also, waiting WAY too long , to acknowledge that the kicker was a problem. Cost us a couple of games on its own
I agree with previous posts. It’s a two headed monster in my opinion. Number one for many years running is the ownership of Woody Johnson. He has completely failed the fanbase with his actions and lack of knowledge. Number two is the nightmare of Aaron Rodgers. The man is a proven cancer to a team and its fanbase. It started with the insane courtship of Rodgers by the Jets owner and management. Who the hell does that? Next thing we started to get Packers retreads, it’s gone downhill ever since. Until this team is sold, expect the same thing year after year. Many of us will begin to walk away.
Front Office. The NFL is a QB league now more than ever. Joe Douglas picking Zach Wilson set this franchise back for years due to all of the horrible reactionary and bad moves (including Aaron Rodgers) that followed. You can't miss that bad as a GM, at the most important position on the field, and still be on the job all of these years later. The Jets need a real GM who knows how to build a long term, sustainable roster.
This isn't actually true. There is also the fan base. A large majority of which who tend to always champion a lot of the failure decision making logic in question as it's happening in real time. Woody no doubt sucks as an owner, but in this specific case the masses of fans who are now trying to retreat back into hanging this recent failure on ownership and the businessmen ultimately making the call to give 99% of this fanbase exactly wanted they wanted and were desperately clamoring for within their own "you have to be all in!" championing cries is kinda BS imo. Those fans that desperately wanted this ultimately brought the possibility into existence and wear the rebuild killing "Rodgers Experience" L here just as much as having Woody as an owner does. The championing failure fanbase says it's Woody's fault after-the-fact, and he of course gets to sit there thinking of himself as the fallen leader hero who at least went down simply trying to give this fanbase exactly what they wanted. Both sides of that coin suck here as far as i"m concerned lol
My one factor answer here would be Nathaniel Hackett. The rebuild effort and and any forward momentum this franchise had going for it was fatally wounded the day this team made what's arguably the worst OC hire in history. Nothing to me will ever better represent "only the Jets" better then the massive amount of faith that was put into this concept idea that a 40yo in-decline Rodgers was going to be enough to offset having no competent offensive coaches on staff. Especially given the franchises' already extensive track record of offensive failure coming in to this latest reach experiment. Once this LaFleur'less Hackett/Rodgers offense predictably fell on it's face there realistically wasn't ever going to be any coming back from that.
it's a trick question. there is no one primary reason this year. I do think Woody made a bad situation worse with his meddling. Owner should pay the bills, insist on excellence, and be chief cheerleader. I agree with the comments about team lacking identity. I'll add toughness too. We have wilted way too often I'm not a fan of FA fixes -- often you're getting someone else's problems or someone with an inflated sense of self. Believe in building through draft. not sure how i feel about roster or GM. obviously very frustrated and don't want to over-react on that. I do think our coaching has been a mess though, penalties, slow starts, cratering in times of pressure. too often we're a step behind.
I like the idea of the thread, but the truth is that this kind of shit show is never due to just one thing. It’s the end result of a culmination of LOTS of stupid ideas and actions. Ownership is and has been terrible and when has Woody meddling EVER led to success? Decision to hire a proven loser like Hackett was just the beginning of this mess. JD’s inability to build a respectable OL after 5 or 6 years (however you want to define it) of trying and using high draft picks has been terrible. JD’s handling of the DL has been bad…letting Huff go was debatable, but he was very good for us in our system, then trading for malcontent Reddick, then letting the run stopping DTs go for nothing, then trading JFM for nothing, and while none of those guys were studs and you can make the argument that individually each move was fine (how many soul crushing roughing penalties do we need to see from JFM??), in the end, the overall result is that our DL regressed. A lot. Part of that was bad luck with JJ getting hurt early, and that’s not on JD, but the overall result has been the defense regressed. The players have checked out. AR knows he has to throw the ball in less than 2 seconds because of the bad OL so our offense sputters unless Hall or the receivers take a 5 yard pass and break off a run (like Adams did yesterday and GW has done in the past). Our playcalling is still awful. Woody’s timing on Saleh was bad. He should have cleaned house last offseason and gone after a guy like Harbaugh, and at least talked with guys like Vrabel and Carroll, but no. He waited to give Saleh a chance and then the firing clearly has not worked. The players see the writing on the wall with this staff and they have checked out. So it’s a lot of things. But to me, if I HAD to pick the single biggest issue, I’d say coaching.
Ownership meddling, period. I think Woody, irrespective of his comments about the team, lost faith in JD when when he had no plan for B-up QB other then ZW. He saw what we all did, that the prick essentially checked out after AR went down. The following statement is not in support of him... but what the f was he supposted to do when he see the team that supposedly has all this talent playing uninspired and unemotional FB, unperforming under RS? People call his decision to fire RS rash... but we all know RS should have been fire last year so he does the deed and only informs JD maybe a 1/2 before it happens because he simply lost faith in him and worst, doesn't trust his judgement or commitment anymore, So he looks at the staff which is poor and selects the one he thinks is best out of the group of shitting coaches. In the same vain, he gets Mr. holdout to come in and make a trade for DA thinking this will help the new HC (who is overwhelmed, to say the least) and AR get the O working. However, what he failed to realize was that three years of RS "unaccountability" and NO LEADERSHIP in the LR took its toll on the team (or as I say the players ) and when the losses start to happen players checked out; thus, 3-8. personally, they need someone who is no non-sense and is a disciplinarian to cut the under performers, mold this collection of players into a team with an idenity that plays physical, with emotion and is disciplined. Is Parcells still alive?
In the end, it’s ALL on Woody. He’s the owner and the boss and he owns the major decisions. He controls who is hired and fired. So while I think our biggest issue this particular season is coaching, the bigger picture, and why we are even here, is Woody. He is the single reason why we suck. He consistently hires the wrong people for key roles, and he consistently meddles when the schmucks he hired led to bad results and his meddling hasn’t improved a single thing.
Saleh did not hold players accountable to begin with, and it escalated even more once Rodgers got here. Saleh and his staff are Beta personalities and they’re not good strategically or intelligently when it comes to football. Ultimately that’s what was the source that doomed us from the start, but it also led to players having overinflated egos and false assumptions that we are good even though we had not ever actually done anything to prove we were good.
Poor coaching, I believe they have good players not great players but good players, and if they had a good CS it would reflect on the field. Saleh was a bad hire and the staff he put together is abysmal. That’s why there has not been improvement with the team, terrible CS.
