Where are they now file - Sam Darnold Looking Good

This is such a small sample size so far. Can we wait half a season before going crazy because Sam had a good start to a year finally! 6 years later and 6 teams later lol

 

lafleur is a Shanahan disciple. And if this dumb GM didn’t believe in Zach Wilson more, Darnold would’ve gotten that coaching/system to flourish here

Are you trying to say that you don't think run right, run left, pass, punt, with a few near-miss delay of game penalties, is a strategy that is conducive to long-term success?

 

I really would like to see Braelon Allen in that offense, just don't know if they would have drafted him for it, unless as a fullback.

And guys like that ex-Jets FO/Draft guy who said that Zach's stats were misleading and he was WAY INNACCURATE was spot-on.

Somehow, a 3rd-level draft analyst got it right and our crack GM/Draft dept. with a dozen analysts and all the resources got it wrong.

Nobody on this site had heard of Zach Wilson before Fall 2020. It was a freaking joke that a guy #3 on the depth chart a year earlier was now right behind Trevor Lawrence.

Hell...on this board...when we blew the Trevor pick....everyone here thought we were getting Justin Fields, who at LEAST looked great in the 2021 CFP, beating TL and Clemons and losing to Alabama but playing great.

So what do we do ?

We draft a guy who plays good against high school kids in front of cardboard cutouts.

saw that. He’s a good guy, woulda been easy to take the bait there

 

Say what you will but he always took the high road no matter what.

 

Remember Darnold's first pass from the line of scrimmage on opening day his rookie year? A pick six. I laughed, I gotta admit, because so Jetsy. He did shake it off, though.

Then we had that jackass Jeremy Bates @ OC who was more interested scaling Everest or some other shit in the Himalayas. PAIN.

 

Darnold with 3 more td's today and almost 300 yards, still can't believe JD traded this guy to get the great Zack Wilson who was traded away for nothing at the end. I still do not understand what the Jets organization saw in Zack Wilson.

 

I hope Minnesota makes it deep into the playoffs just to shove it up this franchise's butt. Oh, and also so I can laugh.

 

It looks terrible now but Darnold's body of work was objectively mediocre until this year. He had the misfortune of landing in 2 dysfunctional organizations with no clue how to develop QB's. The he had the misfortune of landing in a great org last year but little opportunity to start.

Stuff like this makes it impossible to get excited about the Jets drafting a new rookie QB when you know they will f*** it up no matter what.

 

Also, can you imagine Darnold behind that line the last two years? He probably would’ve had ptsd at this point.

A lot of us genuinely wished him the best when he left, because it looked like we ruined him. It’s good to see he bounced back, because we did him no favors. He was also trash in Carolina. The game finally slowed down for him. Which is great!

I think the lesson here is we should be going with QBs in their fifth or sixth year, not much wear on the tires that we can build with. Not rookie QBs and throwing them to the wolves(since we can’t develop them) or QB at the end of their career.

Theoretically, the same can happen to Wilson in a couple years. They just weren’t ready when they were with us.

 

Sam turned the ball over 3 times on Monday, let’s be a bit objective. His INT rate is still near his career norms and he’s getting sacked quite a bit still. With that said, a career high 69-% completion rate is good and he’s near the top in passing yards. Having JJ/Addison helps and now with TJ back, I do expect him to keep up the good play. I do find it funny that one column suggested that the whispers of JJ to start would be heard IF he was the backup which seems unfair to Sam. He’s def helped that offense be good so far this season.

 

I don't think we ruined him. I would agree with those who say he was not the generational QB he was touted to be in college. Nevertheless, he played well for us when 1) he wasn't injured or sick and 2) he had a full roster to work with. I think it was clear that for him to be a winning QB he needed more help around him than the Jets had at the end of his third year here. Therefore the Jets management, in their infinite wisdom, opted for Wilson instead. In Carolina, he won his first three games until McAffrey, their best offensive weapon, got hurt. Now In Minnesota, with some good O weapons and a solid D, he is playing up to the level many of us thought he was capable of. As for Wilson, yeah he could develop into a good QB, but the difference is that he had the O weapons that Darnold didn't, and still couldn't produce.

 

I was going to post this yesterday too. He’s playing well and probably the best of his career but he’s nowhere near some elite player. He has a really good coaching staff, defense and skill position grouping in his favor.

Last week was different against the Colts but he’s mostly had a propensity to start out fast and then the offense can’t move the ball the rest of the game like he did versus us, the Rams, Packers and Giants to a lesser extent.

The Jets did nothing to help him and his development here was awful. I’m rooting for him, but he’s still probably at the top end a middle of the road QB skewing further to the bottom who can get to the playoffs in good roster conditions.
