When Fitzmagic was the starting QB for the Jets, they had to win their final game to make the playoffs, but lost. I think Tyrod was the opposing QB. Can anyone confirm?
Pretty sure you're correct.... but also pretty sure Tyrod didnt force Fitztragic into an epic choke-job performance....
This was where I was at when first hearing word we were giving him 2/$18m after Brissett's market as a backup came in at $1/$8m. If you are getting him on the cheap that's one thing. Why are we paying a premium on this guy? This talk here about Tyrod being one of the better backup QB outside some very opportune and selective garbage time stat padding over the last couple of years is a hard reach imo. Tyrod is 35yo and fairly brittle bodied in his own right. Who is coming in to backup an in-decline 41yo QB who's body gave out on him 4 plays into last season, and which followed a year even the most optimistic outlook wants to dismiss away due to injury. This is the exact opposite of an ideal pairing. Tyrod is the type of guy you go out of your way in fantasy to pick up the opposing defense when we see him getting the start. He isn't coming in, being a good bet to play well in any meaningful spot, or saving any season if/when Rodgers goes down. I'd ultimately rather of just seen the team ride out another year of Zach as BU (being pot committed financially anyway), in what most probably ends up being yet another eternally stuck in rebuilding mode season anyway, and invested that $18m elsewhere. Such as tacking on a chunk of that to the OT offers JD is likely putting on the table atm and seeing get dismissed from consideration outright when pretty much any other team/opportunity in the league matches it.
Taylor is fine as a backup for this team. He can win some games with his legs and he doesn't make boneheaded mistakes throwing the ball. Plenty of other things to complain about
And as noted before, here come the string of better looking backup signings then this dumb overpay on Tyrod: Jameis Winston just only got 1/$8.7m
Mariota gets a 1 year deal with a $6m base salary. (I was actually disappointed we didn't get a bigger sample size at what he might of looked like behind that Eagles o-line last year.)
Did you watch Mariota with the Falcons at all? He was pretty dreadful and then threw a bitch fit when he got benched. Dude can’t throw the ball past 5 yards at all. He just checks the ball down, runs for some first downs and runs a competent offense. I don’t really know what everyone’s expecting. The biggest complaint I had about backup QB last year is that the Jets waited nearly a month to really kick and tires. Not that they would’ve ended up any better but when you lose your QB 4 snaps into the year, you should bring 5 guys in and have an open tryout. They put their heads down and stuck through the muck and then put one of the worst college QB’s ever (and obviously had a shit pro career) in when the season was lost just to juxtapose his shitty performance next to Wilson’s to give the fans the middle finger.
If Rodgers gets hurt for the season, you're right. But if he gets hurt for several games, then Taylor could be the difference between making and missing the playoffs, when Rodgers would be back.
I did in fact since I get Atlanta channels locally. He wasn't dreadful at all imo given terrible coaching and limited system considerations he had to work within. In fact his overall body work/play ultimately wasn't all too far off on a game manager efficiency level then the season our current game manger Rodgers put up that same year behind his fluffed out TD total fwtw/btw. Hence why I was curious to see what that would of looked like behind a much better surrounding support system in Philly (well, until whatever that meltdown was at the tail end of last year) Mariota is the younger, more durable, and better QB. Which would/should of made for a more enticing overall backup option then Tyrod Taylor imo. Especially at less and shorter year money.
This would be a good signing for a rebuilding team. For a team with a postseason push - their screwed, unless he's the #3 guy.
Exactly. Rodgers is 41yo, and the Tom Brady rules to aging are the extreme longshot probability odds on the current reality table. "Is this guy a good bet to be able to start a full season slate of games if it gets asked out of him" needed to be requirement here imo regardless who we signed. We don't need to be finding ourselves mid season talking about a need trade for Jameis Winston again. When we could of, ya know...made more of an effort to just sign Jamesis Winston now instead. Beyond the overpay Tyrod fails that qualification marker.
So we couldn't spring for an extra $3.5M/year on a short commitment (only 2 years) to go for Minshew? The guy is in the prime of his career, plays his heart out and has some upside. How many extra guys can the Jets bring in for that $3.5M gap between Minshew and Tyrod? Of course Minshew wanted to start. He went to another shit franchise in the Raiders. He's going to be in a QB battle in Vegas. He could've been in a QB battle here too so those cancel each other out. Even though the almighty Rodgers is the starter he is far from a sure thing to stay healthy for an entire year. Did the Jets even try to get Minshew? This front office and ownership have been jerking the fans around nonstop for too long now. Blow it up!
Taylor is fine but dude always gets hurt. Would have much preferred Minshew but he probably wanted a chance to compete to start
They had the 4th most rushing yards in the league and 3rd in yards per attempt. They had a former 1K yard tightend, a rookie 6’5” receiver and a thousand yard back. They were 12th best in the league in sacks allowed. Where was the poor supporting cast in Atlanta? They’ve been everyone’s darling team for the past two years except they have absolutely dogshit quarterback play (Mariota who was apart of that). You really try round peg square hole everything into your Rodgers conspiracy theories.
That starts with Arthur Smith and Dave Ragone, and which just ultimately handicapped anything beyond that. Both of which were now fired, gone and taking their demoted positions elsewhere (hate that hire for Pitt btw). I didn't even know you could see the shape of the peg with how far down in the sand that head has been with anything that might reflect poorly on the continued Rodgers was the right call narrative
The above said it's also worth noting that you probably just laid out the upper end of the best case scenario projections this 2024 jets team can hope for on offense . In a Hackett offense that, same as it was there, will likely not be any more stat padding friendly for Rodgers then it was for Mariota. We'll see if you are summing up Rodgers as being "dreadful" if/when that happens.
Huh? Rodgers was clearly the wrong decision. I wanted Carr and didn’t want the Jets to hire Hackett or sign Lazard under any circumstance. However, bitching that we signed Tyrod Taylor over Marcus Mariota and blaming it on Rodgers is just dumb.
I think your mind would change if Rodgers didn't get hurt until the Jets were 10-2. Then you and everyone else would be killing JD because he didn't sign a veteran backup.
