Look at the Saints. Always was above the CAP and had no issue signing Maye back in the day or Carr just now. There is definitely a way to manipulate CAP and keep Huff. Actually, he is listed as LB not Edge, so his franchise tag is just under 22 mil. Now, transition tag is used very rarely, but this may be a unique situation where it is used: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-transition-tag-what-it-is-how-it-works. The reason is that Huff is a key player, but perhaps not quite worth 22 mil. Late teens though is fair.

Basically it would be 18.5 transition tag vs 22 mil. Then after he signs a contract with someone, if it is not us, you just match and pay him what he is worth, there is nothing wrong with that. The key is that we need to free up the roster spot for him and McD to play. There is a logjam right now at the position, with JFM, JJ, Huff, and McD all needing to play major minutes. JFM I feel should be the odd man out. He only has 1 guaranteed year left at 14 mil, then team option for 15 mil. At these numbers he can easily be traded. Then we can retain Huff and the pass rush.

You tag him so he doesn't walk out the door then worry about the rest of the cap manipulation in FA with WR/OL.

Agree with what @Borat is saying. I would also entertain the non-exclusive tag where if a team wants him, let them pony up the 2 1sts and pay him. Let him get a deal from someone else and it can set his market. Similar to what Balt did with Lamar. Go find your market and come back to us.

YOU have to roll the dice with Huff and tag him. You do not let him walk for nothing.

God forbid we are in a situation where we can't move him, you find a way to move Will McDonald then..

GM needs to yield picks here OR keep his best pass rusher. Not that hard.

Since the jets didn’t trade him at the deadline, I have to think they intend on keeping him, otherwise they would’ve just gotten whatever they could for him. The season was lost anyway. If you intend to not sign him and move forward with Will McDonald, then get rid of Huff for something while you can. If they end up not tagging or resigning him, and also didn’t dump him for a pick when they could, this regime is dumber than I thought.

You have to remember that the Jets are an incredibly dumb organization.

Apparently you're new to being a Jet fan. Welcome aboard, and please fasten your seatbelt. A demonstration on organizational stupidity will begin shortly.

Agree tag him. Then send out a letter telling the other teams that they can have Huff OR McDonald for a 2nd round pick in 2024 draft.

Dumb? You are talking about a GM who signed all world players like Lazard, Tomlinson, Brown, and Uzomah to over $100M in contracts.

I think he may have bankrupted our comp picks after his amazing FA job last season.

There is nothing wrong with letting a player walk, it actually helps the reputation of the organization in many ways. Players can know they won’t be jerked around

If he gets a huge contract offer, you let Huff walk. We aren’t hard up for pass rush talent, I don’t think he’s a future hall of famer. And he’s not a 3 down defensive end, he’s just a pass rush specialist. If we can’t afford him, wish him well

Will Parkinson who is pretty solid thinks we offer Huff 3/51 with 29 gtd. If he hits FA, that offer could be blown out of the water. Could be a Hassan Reddick type situation where he was only a part time player and then turned into an 18 sack guy with the Eagles when he played every down.

I don’t think he did when he was in Arizona. If you pay him, expand his role…

This is precisely what transition tag is for. You have the right to match any offer. For a LB, which is what Huff is listed at, it is 18.6 mil, which is not a crazy number. So, make him a longer term offer, transition tag at 18.6, and then let the market play out. This is what I would do.

One thing I do disagree is that we are not hard pressed for pass rush talent. Without Huff there was not much pass rush generated. Maybe McD can replace him, but this is a lot easier said than done. And even if McD does become similar quality pass rusher, just imagine what we can do with both of them. JFM may be the odd man out. So. if he does not sign extension, transition tag Huff, and let's see what offers come in. At least we know we don't have to pay Jets premium in this scenario since we can match any offer.
