Risner was very highly rated coming out of college, and AFAIK is a very good OL. I am shocked that no other team signed him until the Vikings did. There must be a good reason for that, but darned if I know what it is. In terms of talent, I think he would have definitely been one of our top 5 OL. I don't see any way that JD would have thought that Tomlinson, Schweitzer, Mitchell or Turner are as good as Risner. Even if they do gel soon, unless there's something bad about Risner that I'm unware of, he would have been a good signing for beyond this season as well as this season. You know as well as I that with the problems they had with Becton, there was probably no way that the Jets would even have considered drafting Jones, and if they had the media and fanbase would have gone nuts. I'm not sure that he would have been a scheme fit, but even if he would have been, I would have been very surprised to see the Jets draft Jones. It's hard to know what JD thinks but they said that they thought that Warren had 1st round talent, but dropped due to his injury. Perhaps they were hoping that Becton would be happy at RT and Warren could be their future LT. Who knows? We definitely need to hope that our OL gels soon. I don't think NE will have the pass rush that Dallas had. Saleh, Ulbrich, and Hackett better wise up quickly and do a better job with game planning, or this is going to be a long season, and they will be looking for a job next season.
JD has to go -Is Max Mitchell unplayable? -Where is Carter Warren? We drafted him by trading back after Brown got Duwan Jones and hes starting at RT for them and doing fine. -Where is Joe Tippman? At some point, he needs to replace CMG or LT. You draft all of these guys yet they don't see the field. I can't state what the issue is.
Unless Dawand also has knocked knees like Becton, I don't know why not trade up a few spots for him in the 4th. That's what many people wanted here. This was a major need, and we have a second round talent within grasp in the 4th. Dawand has faced toughest competition and delivered great results. The guy was picked 1st or second team all American by major publications. He is also full 2.5 years younger than Warren, has much more accomplishments, and wasn't injury prone like Warren. This is a guy you can take a chance on in the 4th round. Low risk, high reward. Instead JD got a typical 4th/5th round injury prone long shot and traded down to also grab likes of Kuntz, because he is athletic, though sucked in College. If the argument is that we didn't want a big guy like that because of Becton, well, he should have picked Wirfs back in the day. Now the OLine mistakes of the past are causing future ones, with compounding interest. Just pretty demoralizing seeing the guy many here wanted as a consolation prize after not getting Broderick play well while our line cannot get its shit together and already dashed SB hopes.
What are the chances that we see a different OL alignment this week? Call me crazy but I wouldn't be surprised if we see AVT at LT this week. They did it last year, so why not again?
I don’t know what the best option is…maybe they are hoping the OL gels a bit over the next couple of games (though expecting that against a Belichick defense is a rough road)…if I had to shuffle it, I don’t know what the best option would be, is it AVT to RT, Becton to LT, Tippman to RG, and try one of the backups at LG? I don’t know what the answer is but our OL has been pretty terrible through the small sample size of two games…
Well if that's the case, and it most likely is, that just shows me that they aren't serious about winning this year.
IMHO it's left to right: AVT, Tomlinson, Tippman, McGovern, Becton. We will never see this lineup though. Because if you're trying to ya know, compete and win football games, it would make too much sense.
IMO if you're trying to win football games, McGovern isn't on the field. By his own admission, he's a worse OG than C. He shouldn't be at RG. IMO either Schweitzer or Turner should be at RG.
Yep... That Sean Payton. I'll take 0-2 Sean Payton over 1-1 Saleh everyday and especially over Nate Hackett, son of Paul Hackett. Maybe for once Saleh needs to put Zach and Brown on blast instead of excuse making.
Tomlinson has been atrocious since the day he got here. What a horrible signing and Saleh knew this guy. He has no business playing
If PFF can be believed, on Sunday, Tomlinson was our 2nd best OL vs the pass rush. He only gave up 2 pressures. AVT gave up 5 as did McGovern. Brown gave up 4, Becton 3 and Tomlinson only 2. I think Brown had to have given up more than 4, however, and I would be stunned if AVT actually gave up 5. I don't have a hard time believing that McGovern was that bad, but since Zach was usually able to step up in the pocket, I don't think that McGovern, Tomlinson and AVT were as bad as PFF says. AVT did give up the pressure to Lawrence that prevented Zach's 2nd TD throw to Wilson. Tomlinson has been a major disappointment. There's no denying that. I think the Jets will give him another week or two, and then move to Schweitzer or Tippman.
I feel like they'll give this version of the OL another week or two and see how it goes. These first couple of games were kind of their preseason, which is unfortunate, so I expect them to stand pat with these guys this week and maybe next week and hope they improve with more reps as a unit. However, if they don't improve, I definitely see them shaking things up sooner rather than later.
