JD should be all in on trying to trade for Martin who played OT in college. Sounds as iif the Cowboys are not going to rework his contact. I think Martin would sure up the line and give us a better chance than Cook. I am sure the price would be steep though
In a vacuum I would agree, but I think the cost would be too much. I know we're "all-in" for this season but we're already down 1 premium draft pick for next year's draft and I can't imagine the Cowboys giving him away for a couple Day 2-3 picks. So I guess I should re-phrase my response to, for the right price, I would absolutely go after Zack Martin.
He’s one of the best guards of all time. I doubt he’d want to come here and play a harder position in his twilight years. I’d bring him in if he gets cut and let him take over for Loser Tomlinson though.
I guess that I'm the lone dissenter so far. We don't have the draft capital to trade and the cap is already going to be very tight next season. There's no way we have the cap space to add another big contract. Tomlinson had a bad year last year, but I believe that he will bounce back this season and have at least a solid, if not very good year.
We are already balls deep in commitments to this 2 year window. Either be all in or all out. If we don't make a move for someone at T before the season I will be disappointed with Joe Douglas. There are 32 teams and 64 starting tackles and surely additional pieces that are overlooked or had a great camp or just a cap casualty. My theory is Joe is waiting to scoop up some tackles after camp cuts but that level of work is inexcusable to me. A big move via trade for a solid reliable T is the only acceptable path forward. Joe Douglas was an offensive lineman and I imagine he specifically had a role in scouting for OL when he was a scout with the Ravens, but all I have seen so far is Joe makes these small trades for C level talent OL as if he thinks he is getting good value.
Here's the thing: somehow the really good teams always seem to find a way to scrape together the money/assets to acquire the pieces needed to put them over the top. If Douglas can't do that, then despite how much I've supported him, then he isn't good enough to make this a SB contending team. It may take "mortgaging the future", but as we all know, the future is always uncertain, it's not a reliable commodity...NOW is the only real thing you can count on, and right now the OL is completely unreliable, especially when considering it's being tasked with protecting Rodgers who the Jets went all in with by acquiring him. This is no time to be "penny-wise and pound foolish". If Douglas can get a proven tackle like Martin he has to do it.
While a right side of Martin at RG and AVT at RT would allow us to manage LT with Brown/Becton, and would improve the line tremendously, I just don’t see it happening. It’s a pipe dream Honestly, I think JD at some point could maybe come up with a contract for Martin (though we have a lot invested in Tomlinson and hard to imagine tying up a ton of money at the OG position), to me the main sticking point is I don’t think Jerry would trade him. At least not for any semblance of a reasonable deal. Jerry is too proud, Martin is too good, and Jerry is not the kind of guy who would give in to a player demand…he’s too proud. The only way he’d trade him is for some outrageous deal, and we just don’t have the assets to trade. No first round pick next year as that will almost certainly go to GB, can’t see giving up next year’s 2nd rounder either, further complicated by the conditional nature of next years first and second rounders…just too complicated Would love to see it, but its a pipe dream And on top of it, honestly if you really want to build a line, I think it’s better to be great at OT and then C than to be great at guard If we’re going to make a serious move for OL (which I don’t think will happen anyway), it should be for an OT not a guard
I for a dime in for a dollar. Do whatever it takes, Becton/Brown, Tomlinson, Tippman/McGovern, Martin, AVT. That line is serviceable if not great w/some depth.
Hard to believe there wasn't some kind of splash move for the Oline this week. Lord Rodgers is going to be tweaked.
It's not ideal but if its the only way then fine, we need to do it. All our eggs are in the next 2 year window.
I can see a world where it’s Schweitzer, Mitchell and Turner are competing for a starting role with AVT playing G or T depending on who wins.
Adam Schefter on Twitter: "Cowboys and All-Pro guard/team captain Zack Martin reached agreement on a reworked deal, per sources. The new deal will pay him north of $18 million in each of the next two years. Martin was scheduled to be at $13.5 million this year and $14 million next year, so it’s an… https://t.co/zszAxiVAR8" / X
adios pipedream 2024 draft - Joe Alt, ND (will be gone) - Olu Fashanu, Penn St. (could be gone) - JC Latham, 'Bama - Graham Barton, Duke - Javon Foster, Mizzou - Jonah Monheim, So. Cal. .
It's one thing to see the potential for one of these lineman to move around and another for the coaches to even consider it being a possibility. They continue to start Billy Turner at T even though the reports we are getting indicate he's the worst lineman on the entire team. All we know is Saleh is open to moving AVT to tackle and it increasingly sounds like that could happen. Hard to speculate on other moves though because they haven't made the shift yet. Will need to see if they make some OL changes this week and experiment. IMO, they need to sit Billy Turner down and let a guy like Schweitzer or Senat get some first team reps. tryout Tippman at G. Tryout Tippman at C and McGovern at G. They aren't doing enough experimenting, would like to see it in next practice.
Definitely time to give Tippman and Schweitzer some serious work at starting RG, with AVT at RT. Can’t see Turner eating up a roster spot, he’s been terrible.
