If I remember right, a different color helmet was a different helmet altogether, which had to be fitted and set up before the season. Like everything else in those days, the Jets got the memo late and couldn't change helmets in the middle of a year without the proper preperation. So they took the green helmets they had and decaled them with the old logos and white stripes. It was either that or the players preferred to keep their same helmets, but it had to do with having to wear a different helmet.
i think we should bring back the uniforms from the 90s as well...the early 90s that is...i love the old them almost as much as the old school eagles
I still like the old uni's but i would only want to see the mid 80's version with the white bars on the helmet and minus the nasty black bits everywhere. Unlike the early 90's incarnation it is not tainted with pain and misery and we had some good moments in the mid 80's. I still prefer the Jets logo with the plane dash across the top but would have loved to have seen them combine it with the green oval and some NY letters to have made a totally new logo. As for the Green pants, I like them! there i said it. But only on the away uniform not with the home jersey and the all green look.
I think it would be cool to use the 78-97 uniforms for the throwback games. I remember how horrible the Jets were after the Super Bowl in the early to mid 70's and most of us were glad we got rid of the 65-77 jerseys! As far as 78-97 being all dark years. Todd and Kenny O' had some good years in there. I remember the strike shorten AFC Championship mud-bowl game (ugh) in Miami and I still think the year we lost to the Browns (in part to #99) I thought was going to be our year. I am now glad we went back to the Super Bowl look and most on here do not remember the really dark days in the mid 70's wearing these jerseys anyways. Bring back the kelly green helmets and uniforms for throwback games.
I hope that is never a consideration. The "new" uniforms are great, however if I wanted to see a throwback it would be the Titan Uniform.
I love our uniforms right now. They are one of the more simpler ones in the entire league but they look really good on the players. I just don't like it when they wear the green pants.
i like our current ones, but i think id rather have the old ones as well. i like that logo better. plus im a sucker for the unfashionable, and that bright green was pretty hideous.
I don't those unis. I was at Hofstra when they unveiled them and we found out that NY wouldn't be on the helmets. No thank you.
I'll admit when I was 11 and saw the new unis come out in 1978 I was excited about it too. I'm not old enough to remember Super Bowl III, I saw them go 3-11 three straight years 75-77 so I welcomed the change. But after 20 more years of bad luck I was even happier to see the old ones come back. It was like a piece of my childhood being restored, it was also the year I moved back to New Jersey after a long time, so for me it was fitting.
Now that would like interesting.... But nah..... I think the next time we change our uni's it will be a new pattern.
Here is another thought for a throwback jersey/helmet. The first year that the Jets became the Jets....I think it was 1964, we had a uniform similar to what we have now but the helmet was different. I have only seen a picture of this once or twice but we had a green airplane on the side of the white helmets. Does anyone remember this and/or have a picture of this? Mike
It was 1963. We had a Jet plane on the helmet. It was just for that one year yes. Anyone have any real photos? It's hard enough to find any Titans photos....
if i remember correctly the green helmets with the current/old logo in '93 and '94 were worn because boomer would have been too confused with white helmets
