I think the path forward starts here. Find out if some of these guys want to take a pay cut to stick around. If they don't, I think any of these guys above (maybe with the exception of Mosley) can be cut this offseason and replaced with someone making significantly less or a draft pick. After that, we've gotta get an answer at QB. I'm still not all the way out on Zach but there's no way he goes into next year as the locked in starter. Either bring MW back or sign and/or draft another QB and let them all battle it out in TC. Best man wins. Next, the OL has to improve. Regardless of who the QB is, they won't last long when the OL is giving up 20+ pressures a game. Getting AVT back next year will help a ton on the inside but we have to get the OT spots locked down. I'd stick with CMG for now and draft a back-up C in the mid-late rounds to develop behind him for a year or two. Finally, fill the remaining holes on D. Specifically LB & S. Honorable mention to EDGE as I still don't feel like we've got a true game-wrecker there. Hopefully JJ can develop this offseason and turn into a +starter there though which is why I don't think this is a huge need but def worth another Day 2/3 investment. So there you go, clean up some contracts, address QB, OL, S, LB, and EDGE in FA/Draft. If we can fill half of those holes this off-season, I think we'll be in good shape for next year.
The NCAA QB never translated to the NFL, that’s why QB’s used to sit for 3 years. In fact, due to the fact that money has made it necessary to play a QB immediately, the NFL has never been closer to the NCAA game than it is today, due mostly to the NFL dumbing down offenses. 25 years ago the concept of RPO or Wildcat in the NFL would’ve been laughable.
Looking at Spotrac and OTC and I think the tweet I linked above is incorrect. I do remember us restructuring CJ at some point recently and it looks like we only save 6.5M if we cut CJ instead of the 17M listed above. It does look like we could do a restructure of his contract and save roughly 10M, so I think that's probably the best case scenario. Of all of Macagnan's contracts this CJ Mosley one will take the cake as the worst. There's just no easy out. If we cut him next year we have a 14M dead cap hit. If we wait until next season, it's still a 10M dead cap hit. I think Mosley has been solid so I don't mind him being on this team but he's way overpaid and his production is only going to decline over the next 2 years.
this is eye opening stuff…Arizona saw what they had and moved on after one year, and it proved to be the right move as he failed at three other spots (SF, Miami, TB) we’ve now seen the same sample size with eerily similar results and there are people still wondering if ZW can be the guy… news flash…NO he won’t be crazy
Teams off the top of my head that may offer Mike White a substantial contract w/ QB1 gaurantee: 1. Saints 2. Bucs 3. Panthers 4. Pats 5. Colts Also possible: 6. Packers (if Rodgers leaves) 7. Raiders (if Carr leaves) 8. Giants (if Jones leaves) Maybe more ... Bottom line is MW even w a limited body of work will get a lot attention this off-season. It's been done many times before. The film don't lie he's on time with his throws and hits tight windows. He, like other immobile QB needs strong protection to thrive, which he has not gotten here. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out for the Jets. These are going to be career defining decisions for JD and Saleh.
Listen, I like Mike White, I certainly like him worlds more than Zach fuckin Wilson. White has proven competent. The problem is the NFL is starved for competence at the QB position. There’s not 30 men on the planet who can play the position at an elite level. White is likely going to get a contract that commits a team to him for at least 3 years. As much as I like him, I don’t think we can commit like that financially, nor do I believe Douglas will. This team is going to fall on its sword for Zach unfortunately. They’re going to bring in a cheaper veteran version of MW (Minshew?) and have a sham competition in TC next year. You’re gonna see a bunch of positive articles pumped out about how Zach is a new man and super accurate with impeccable mechanics, and then he’ll be anointed the starter as we watch another season crash and burn, people get fired, rinse repeat
I think you are spot on here. I hope you're wrong about going down with Wilson. Maybe JD is different. Maybe he, like few others before, is savvy and tough enough to cut ties or at least walk back from giving the keys to a highly drafted QB who is just not ready to be in the NFL. Regarding White, you are also correct. Even if he doesn't play another snap I think 3 years of committed (not break the bank) money from a QB needy team is EXACTLY what he will get more or less. History shows that NFL teams are so thirsty for that guy at QB that they will gamble on someone who has shown even just flashes in the NFL. See Schaub, Hasselbeck, Foles, etc etc etc .. sometimes it works out (Haselbeck) sometimes it doesn't (Schaub) ... JD needs to decide if the 3 yrs of committed money to MW is worth it, or if he feels comfortable letting him walk and possibly starring elsewhere. IMO I think the Jets should commit to MW for 3 years at whatever money he'll command ... they will have cap room A, and B they can make more cap room with a couple cuts or restructures. (Lawson, Moseley, Barrios)
Just to touch back on this -- I just finished listening to Rogers on Badlands pod and he thinks it was Quincy, not Mosley who messed up. They were in Cover - 1 man and Quincy bit so hard trying to end the game with a TFL, he let his guy go. He mentioned Mosley's comments in the presser about how the defense made a mistake and that if it was Mosley who made the mistake he would have owned it, similar to how he did with the 4th and 1 play vs the Bills. @Stevied I believe you're right.
well, he does kinda look like the Islanders "fisherman" logo but the last move for an aging Green Bay legend didnt end so well....
He looks older than Joe Willie did when he left town. Also 12 is a "no". Retired for the aforementioned.
Sure .... as long as it doesn't cost more than 1 first round pick ... this team is super bowl contender with a legit QB However if this is the scenerio they should also resign White (or someone competent) as the back up bc what IF Rodgers is just done (possible) or he gets hurt (very possible) you can't trot out Wilson if you're gonna go for it in 2023.
I could see a 2023 1 (prob will be around pick 20 anyways) and a conditional 3 that can become a 2024 2 based on incentives? Think it's a no brainer move if it's available. His money will be off the books by the time you need to pay Hall, AVT, G Wilson, + Sauce.
You're right. This is absolutely a no Brainer move if it's available, and not too costly. I'd also do the 2024 3rd possibly a 2nd as well. Gotta have a strong QB2 plan though that would be a must.
That's the one move that could cause me to take a few-year hiatus from the Jets. Does anyone dispute that Rodgers is the most annoying asshole in a league that sometimes seems to have more than its share of assholes as players, coaches and owners?
