This morning I read an article by former jets executive Daniel Kelly on how the jets can become more competitive. The first and most important point Kelly emphasized to get better was quit talking about rebuilding and start talking playoffs. He suggested and I totally agree that it's time go into 2022 expecting playoffs! I know there is a such a thing as a realist. but the more we keep talking about being 2-3 years away, the more likely we will always be 2-3 years away. If the Bengals can do it, so can the jets-- UNLESS we continue to tell ourselves we can't. We have the picks, we have the cap space, so IMO there is no reason the jets can't be 10-7 of 11-6 next year. Nobody likes losing, but there are those who "don't mind" losing, rationalizing we played hard and are a few years away--NOT the approach of winning organizations.
I disagree. What we say and think has no bearing on what the team does. One has to accept reality. I'm certain that JD and Saleh are trying to make the playoffs, but they're being realistic. The Bengals are a terrible comparison with the Jets. They had a MUCH better, deeper roster than the Jets did, didn't have nearly the rookies and young players starting that the Jets had, had a HC with at least a year's experience, and got a QB who was ready to play at a high level in the NFL day one. I'm not accepting losing or rationalizing losing. I've been a fan of the Jets for longer than 95-97% of the posters on this forum. I was suffering through frustrating, embarrassing losing seasons before many of you were born, so get out of here with that nonsense.
I am not just talking about what we say and think, I am suggesting that the jets coaches and organization get a winning mindset, which they obviously DON"T have, and haven't had since Parcells.. And, as I stated earlier, I borrowed this suggestion from Kelly's article which I just read this a.m. Go ahead and google Daniel Kelly, you can read the article for yourself. He used to work for the jets for 4 years, and his "winning mindset" was only the first of five decent suggestions he had for his old team in 2022 and beyond And when you google Kelly, why not get his contact info and then you can tell him also to "get out of here with that nonsense?"

We have a fourth place schedule, $50 million in cap space and four picks in the top 38. A playoff run should be on the table. The Bengals and Eagles both did it this year. Plenty of teams go from last to playoffs with the benefit of the last place schedule. The Eagles had to beat one team over .500 to make it and zero playoff teams.
I agree and the highlight of every Jets season is how high our draft pick is. We should always be talking winning seasons, playoffs, championships. Be like the Cheifs and drafting in the bottom five every year. That is successful.
Eagles don't play in the AFC East though and the Bengals were kind of artificially last in 2020. I'd be far more confident of the Jets chances to go from last place to playoffs in the NFC East. It's not impossible by any means but virtually everything has to go right I think. 4/5 immediate contributors via draft, FAs producing, staying relatively injury free at key spots and the QB making a big jump. It's a lot to bank on and I certainly wouldn't put any money on it all happening. I'd think the win expectation next season is probably in the 6-10 range realistically. The very top of that range being a squeeze into the playoffs.
I wouldn’t put money on it, but a wild card berth should certainly be in the conversation and on the table around Thanksgiving. With the addition of the wild card teams, 44% of the league makes the playoffs. We need to be competitive for that. The NFL is built for parity and quick turnarounds.
I couldn't agree more with the OP! The acceptance of mediocrity and this losing mentality that has permeated and taken over the NY Jets organization to a point where seasons ending on October 15 have become the norm and acceptable to all involved, has to be changed NOW. This change has to not only be of personnel, but of mindset as well. Competition for a division title and playoffs should not even be a discussion, it should be automatic and expected every season. I am tired as hell of hearing "we are 2 years away, or we are in year 2 of a 5 year rebuild" horse s**t. A rebuild btw that has thus far taken 12 years. With this mindset, we will be rebuilding until 2120. If JD is as great a GM as some think and have stated he is (myself not being one of them btw, so far I think he has been mediocre at best), with all we have in the draft and cap space, there is no reason why we cannot be playoff competitive next season. F**k the schedule. We have to make it as difficult to play against us as is humanly possible. No more trips to Denver like a little doggie with his ears pinned back and his tail between his legs like week 3 of this past season for example where you could see we had no interest in competing, had zero chance to score, and zero chance win. No more going to NE and giving up 54 points and looking like a bunch of scared little girls, or getting absolutely abused by the Bills at home, or on National TV by the likes of Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz LOL. I am sick of watching and following that. At some point in time, this "losing is acceptable because we are rebuilding" BS mentality HAS TO CHANGE. As I stated previously, I want to see JD prove that he is the GM we all hope he is by killing it this offseason because if he pulls another 2020, we will be doomed for another 5-10 years with the same garbage we just finished suffering through.
As it currently stands, we play 7 games against playoff teams. 4 of them are against the Pats and Bills and another is against the Steelers who really had no business being in the playoffs. The schedule includes games against the Browns, Jaguars, Lions, and Bears. We should be pushing 9 wins. We can’t get walked all over by the Dolphins every year any more.
the problem is that Woody Johnson is just happy to be "one of the boys" and too busy tweeting about which uniforms they will wear every week. The impetus has to come from the top. Top to bottom there needs to be a unified commitment to winning. Even off the field there are wins he/they could be pursuing. But they aren't doing that either When there isn't a commitment to winning in the ownership box and among many others in the organization it snowballs and it becomes easier for the (fewer) people in the organization that are committed to winning to chalk up failure as rebuilding. "Rebuilding" becomes their crutch. --- Jets haven't won anything in 50 years, so what's another year of rebuilding.... that's what happened to the Cubs and why it took them over 100 years to win a world series. And it was NOT easy to break through that mindset
I miss the Rex Ryan energy. From Day 1 at the podium, he told us "It's NOW. No reason we can't be the team no one wants to play. I didn't come here to kiss Belichick's rings" He got the team AND the fan base amped up. He set expectations thru the roof and he demanded his team deliver. We fell just minutes short 2 yrs in a row, but that's a hell of a lot better than "We're 2-14, 4-13 but that's ok see bc we're rebuilding". I would LOVE Woody to start talking playoffs and beyond. The FIRST thing any owner needs to do is set high expectations.
And he was derided for it at the time...."Oooh... don't get Belichick mad at us" He was a labeled a "blowhard" who couldn't deliver the goods. In his first two years he delivered twice as many playoff wins than any Jets coach before or since.
I agree Rex came with all kinds of juice. He was awesome at getting the most out of his squad. Thing is he had a veteran team that had a lot of talent and really only Sanchez was a rookie asked to perform. All the other key guys were vets.
If the front office ignored the reality of the roster we wouldn't have made the Adams and Darnold trades, not to mention all the other ones that I think almost all of Jets Nation agrees were smart moves. The same attitude is what got Mac to give out ridiculous FA contracts that we're still hamstrung by. The Giants are showing what a team that threw contracts around trying to be competitive despite not having the necessary foundation. We suck but the Giants suck and don't have the cap space or draft assets (when you consider they probably need a QB). Part of the reason we sucked the past two years is because we were clearing cap space and building draft assets so that you can build around your new QB on a rookie contract. That being said it is now time to start deploying those assets we've built up, and if Zach turns out to be a bust we'll blow it all up again 2 years from now.
