It has nothing, NOTHING, to do with that. It has everything to do with playcalling. Ulbrich is calling for the LBs to drop back 15 yards almost every play. He gives up big plays by trying to prevent big plays. This defense isn't exactly the 85 Bears or 03 Buccaneers, but they have WAAAYYY too much talent to be the worst defense in NFL history, which is what they're on track to be.
Poor tackling is always on the coaches. Players learn how to tackle in high school. They get the training reinforced in college. If they're tackling poorly in the pros, well either you need to get them off the field or you need to *remind* them how you tackle the opponent.
Then you aren't watching the same team. I watched guys run open because safeties don't know how to play the position. It has everything to do with it. You think you just call plays and that makes up for slow linebackers and guys who can't tackle? If it were that simple every team would be good. This team is talentless and your expectations aren't realistic.
There's no reason why someone should call man coverage on 3rd and 19. There's no reason to not spy the QB. No reason to be dropping the LBs back 10-15 yards almost every play. I am watching the same damn team. The team is low on talent, but they are still NFL players. The fact that they aren't even competitive is on the playcalling. Damn straight playcalling is supposed to make up for slow linebackers!
Of course you're going to get shafted by the refs when your product doesn't even begin to approach minimum NFL standards.
Im still under the belief that the Jets need to get out of Nickel and to a 4-3 when the defense is in run formations. The only time they stopped doing that IIRC was when Carter got hurt, they brought in another LB and matched personnel. It just doesn’t seem to make sense to play a wide 9, nickel defense when the run fits just aren’t working when the opposing team plays big personnel.
Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t think the officials were that bad. The Bryce Hall PI was awful. They mid-spotted another first down. I didn’t think Moore got held too bad especially when the ball was 15 feet over his head/in front of him. It’s also likely because the officials are generally just awful every week that I’m desensitized to it. I like Saleh’s aggression. I think it was less about the officials in all honesty and more about his frustration from the entire season.
I thought he kind of looked like a dumbass on the sideline but at least he showed some emotion I guess. I agree that he hit a boil over point and probably is frustrated with the entire situation. Still a boy scout.
Personally, I'm waiting for it to hit the boil over point where he puts 'em in a Camel Clutch on the 50.....
Saleh doesn't call our defense. You can blame Ulbrich for lining up in cover 1 on every single 3rd down (and Saleh for not stopping this nonsense). I have a feeling he's letting Ulbrich finish the year and then he's canning him.
Why doesnt Saleh start calling the defense? Does he have the chops? Why would he sit and watch his team give up 30+ points per week if he is supposed to be a defensive mind
You can't be as bad as the Jets have been on defense without the coaching being terrible. No idea what is going on but the Jets aren't at replacement level across the field and that's what the results look like.
This early on, I'm fine if Saleh is learning how to be a head coach rather than trying to call plays. The REAL hope is that Fangio gets fired and becomes our DC next year but I think no matter what, Ulbrich has to be gone. I just hope Saleh is learning how to be a head coach to the point where he understands you can't keep a friend around if he's awful at his job.
I hope he learns that lesson. I am skeptical because he's a guy who made it because of his close friendships and now has a parade of buddies on his staff
I wouldn't say he made it because of his close friendships, he made it because he was good at what he did at every stop. But I do worry that he's too loyal to his friends. It ended up working out with MLF and the offensive staff (ironically) but the defense has been a disaster in every way. Changes have to be made.
