I am not an X's and O's guy. But to my untrained eye, our defense seemed very decent. I know Titans were missing Julio Jones and AJ Brown but this defense really held their own. Offense sputtered in the beginning and Defense kept us in the game by only allowing 3 Field Goals. We were down only 9-0 versus being down 17-0 or 21-0 and this kept us in the game. Yeah we gave up 24 points but context matters. This is Week 4 but I see this defense coming together nicely. I am calling all of our Experts! What are you guys seeing?
I have to give Saleh a lot of credit for the job he and the coaching staff have done with the Jets corner backs. When I heard they were going into the season with a squadron of rookies I thought "this could get ugly fast". But, these kids are playing at an elevated level making terrific blocks. 7 sacks today for Jet defenders, the defense was huge today and kept the game close so Wilson could lead the charge to victory in the second half.
Made some big plays, gave up some big plays. Seven sacks but got burned by the screen pass and passes into the flat more than once. The defensive line got into the backfield often but had their hands full with Henry. The young secondary played some excellent coverage, especially on the outside. CJ and Quincy were beating guys up... literally.
I suspect that if the Titans had their two wideouts the Jets would have had a lot tougher sledding and the entire day might have gone a lot different. That said though, we're missing a few important guys as well, and it is really encouraging how consistently the Jets seem to be able to generate pressure from multiple places. Not that its worth much but from my perspective things look more encouraging on defense than they have in years. One of those plays early in the game where the Jets all piled up close to the line, looked like they were dropping back, and then just smoked Tannehill... that was just flat out awesome and again... for the first time in literally years seemed like a unique, innovative, and well prepared scheme that benefited US rather than the other team. Props to Saleh, Ulbrich, or whoever it may have been that was behind that. Who knows... that may have even been the difference between winning and losing.
They were good for sure and kept this game alive with the early red zone defense. They weren't great as we still gave up nearly 500 yards of offense against the B-squad receivers. Derrick Henry did the same thing he does to everyone so it's not anything to be discouraged about. Bryce Hall is an animal. He's so good with the ball in the air. I counted at least three pass breakups. Also consider that while the Titans had both starting receivers out, we started two safeties I've never heard of before they showed the lineup graphic today. So it sort of evens out to an extent. We need Huff off the field on early running downs. He gets blown out of the play too easily.
The one PBU that Hall had where he recovered and perfectly timed the play to avoid DPI was unreal. If it weren’t for injury concerns in 2020 draft, Hall would’ve been a day 2 pick easily. JD got a steal with him. MCII has also been quite good.
Our defense was good, but Tennessee was stupid. They were able to run all over us and they just got bored and stopped doing it. Their offensive coordinator killed them.
I got excited about the sacks until I remembered that Tannehill was one of the other 3 QBs on pace to break David Carr's sack record. The Jets may have put him the lead. I think our DL is a constant force in every game, and I think Bryce Hall is on his way to prominent status, definitely for real. Mosley is all over the place for the ground game but not great in coverage, basically what he was known for in Baltimore. I've changed my tune with CJ, I think the Jets should keep him, maybe figure out a way for a team friendly restructure that throws another chunk of guaranteed money his way. They are still prone to mistakes, but like Zach a lot of these younger guys really just need to get the NFL clock in their heads and get some confidence. And I'm man-crushing on Quincy Williams but I know there's no way the Jets found a guy this good this easy. Gotta be a mirage. He hits like a car.
he really doesn't need much. Him, JFM and Huff been nightmares so far it seems. Also the Jets have settled in on their corners. Echols and Hall on the outside, Carter splits time in the slot with Guidry. They really seem to like Hall, Echols and Carter...they've played really well, you really couldn't ask for more out of them.
The player that Bryce Huff reminds me of the most is the guy he's replacing. He's like a Carl Lawson clone.
They were on fire ….. I’m impressed with this young defense. I don’t see a need for a high pick in ‘22 to be spent on a CB. I can’t wait to see what they add this coming offseason I would imagine they’re gonna go EDGE and another LB with two of their high picks to add to their collection of young talent.
Love his energy. Tackling with bad intentions,. Directing traffic pre-snap like his life depends on it.
I think I know of a specific play you are thinking of too, it was a screen that got dismantled after he audibled the defense and got everyone lined up.
question is... was it strictly OUR performance and we back to not being able to get pressure next week... our do we end up generating pressure more regularly
Yes! That one play really popped, a third and long with like 10 minutes left? He moved the whole D around and dropped himself into a wide zone behind the flat. And it perfectly foiled the play call, as you said. Impressive.
Saleh mentioned he really liked these corners and that they didn't get the ability to have that high pick next to their name, as if it means more that they are picked high. These are guys the staff liked. Echols and Carter have really popped as rookies. They've also kept Pinnock and Dunn on the roster...they are high on all these corners...so maybe there's no need for that kid from LSU for example.
