I think he got some extra dispensations because: 1.) he was hired right after the first draft with Gase and 2.) everybody in the world could see what he's going through in that box on some of the Monday or Thursday night blowouts.

But he's completely reset the franchise to what he wants. No more Gase. No more Sam. He's next in line. Better fill out that OL that I've been watching turn into a seive since Mr. Folgers was in charge of it.

I am fairly indifferent to Joe D's performance to date though I do think we are on the right course.

Like all, I am rooting for him, and happy we finally have a football guy in control. Most have mentioned some good moves and some bad moves he's made in this thread.

There does seem to be a "aura" around him with fans, that he is this miracle worker(I haven't seen it) The bar has also been set very low in recent years.

He was confident the team last year would be competitive, and it was one of the worst fielded teams I've seen.

I am excited to see what he does with these draft picks and a competent coaching staff. Go Jets!

Alternatively if Douglas kept Sam, Sam continued to suck even with a better team and coach, and Wilson turned out to be a quality starter or better, it would also not look good at all for Douglas.

So in short, he is on the clock for not trading back like you wanted, getting rid of Sam which you didn't want and selecting a QB who you don't like.

How would we know the true level of skill or talent in that 2020 squad?

Gase can be blamed for 90% of that shit show imo
JD's 1st draft was ok better than what we have had but is trading has been top notch, the Jets have come out ahead in all trades so far. Again letting Robby go was an error but that was on Gase telling him he didn't want him in the team.

Big draft ahead and likely a new QB to cheer on, you never know he might turn out like Mahomes, Watson, Wilson, well coached and given some help not like the unfortunate Darnold, Bortles and the other shit QB's that have been drafted in the last 10 years alone.

    Keep those fingers crossed

2.5 seconds is the time that the Jets oline has given their QBs since Macagnan was GM. I read an article and I’m having a hard time linking it to the forum but I was disgusted when I read it.

If I’m hiring a GM and he tells me he’s drafting offensive linemen in the 4th round as part of his blueprint, I’m terminating the interview and having him escorted out of the building.

Its time for Jets to build the oline with high draft picks and give their QB protection and time to make plays.

Absolutely agree. And what we all need to understand is when we put blame on Gase, it's not just singularly Gase. Its the entire coaching staff that he assembled and was responsible for. Player development, philosophy on training, practice intensity and structure, philosophy on playing time etc. is probably not discussed enough. When you have incompetent coaching it's not just play call and play design. It's scheme, game planning and again, player development. Think about what happened when Parcells took basically the same 1-15 team to 7-9 in a year.

I have been critical of Douglas in the past, but taking a step back you really have to look at the entire picture and judge him from here going forward. You can't fairly judge him because Gase and his staff was THAT bad.

But as many have stated, NO more excuses now. 21 picks, cap space, your own coach, and now you hand picked QB and let's go. I expect HUGE improvement this year. Bring in a vet QB, let him get this rolling so Wilson can at least watch a quarter of a season and learn and I expect a playoff push in 2022.

And with10 picks, I want 2-3 lineman, a RB, another WR and another TE. Don't make the same mistake every single Jet's regime for the past several decades of drafting a QB then sabotaging him by not surrounding him with as many pieces as possible. Worry about loading up on the defense next year.

I think he sorted a lot of D out in FA, so here's hoping that the Draft is loaded with O

Well the team would be setup in that scenario to go after a different QB next offseason as we would be strong just about everywhere else. Who even knows what would have happened

But anyway, you’re right. JD made his decision and he will be judged based on the results

    I’m tempering my excitement...

I have put my trust in JDs vision. If it’s a done deal and the organization believes Wilson’s the pick, I’m good with that.

But he has to hit this draft out of the park. I was listening to some cat recently evaluating NFL GMs and his take was Loomis the NO GM had the best ‘hit rate’ on recent draft picks and it was 50%. Meaning the player drafted was at least a rotational player... JD will have to do much better than that. No more Morgan, Perine, Clark head scratchers.

There is always exceptions is Wilson as athletic as Murphy? Who throws the better spiral. Would Murray fit better in Shanahan's offense or where he's at currently.

Next offseason we might not have the draft position to get the QB we want, and then we could have to trade up. Only to find out the guy we traded a lot of draft capital for is nowhere near as good as Wilson. Essentially what happened when we passed on Mahomes (and Watson assuming he ever plays again) only to trade up for Sam the next year.

Considering the Jets' history, I can understand any Jets fan having skepticism.

Actually, I don't know why I'm so optimistic, but believe I'd be even moreso, if I wasn't constantly reading all the negative comments here. This place can really be a downer.

I don't like every move he's made, but I think there have been sound reasons for every move he's made, and I think he definitely has the Jets on the right course. He changed the paradigm for the Scouting Dept. from ranking prospects by round and BPA, to players who are the best scheme fits and who have certain traits like high character, speed, athleticism, etc. He's only had one draft so far, but I think we're going to begin seeing the dividends of that draft this year. He succeeded in removing the Johnsons from the chain of command. They have to rubber stamp any big decisions, but he runs the football operation now. Imagine that...a football man running the team and making the decisions. That's an awesome accomplishment in less than two years. He also got the org chart changed so that the HC that he got to hire reports to him. That is huge as well. He has cleared up most of the mess that Mac made. Mosely's contract prevented JD from doing anything with him. He has added a bunch of draft capital, getting rid of a malcontent in Adams. He handled his first draft like a seasoned GM. He has exceled in trades getting more than anyone thought he could for Adams and Darnold. He admits when he makes a mistake, like with Robby Anderson. Gase wasn't going to use Anderson much anyway, so it wasn't really much of a mistake. He signed the first pass rushers that the Jets have signed since Abraham left. He added a couple of WRs who are excellent scheme fits for the new offense. He added a stud STs player.

He has made a lot of excellent moves. Even Ozzie Newsome made mistakes. Every human being/GM is going to make mistakes or moves that are unpopular with their fanbase. The proof in the pudding is if they build a winner, and make more good moves than bad. So far Douglas has. IMO he was the only reason we had to have any optimism about the Jets future until he hired Saleh. Now with Saleh and his staff, and drafting a new QB, there are a lot of reasons for hope and optimism.

Last year's team should have been competitive. I think the talent was better than it showed. Gase's stupidity, stubbornness, and trying to save his job rather than giving experience to young players, caused the team to be as bad as it was. Running Gore up the middle all those snaps was stupid. His handling of Sam was abysmal. His not getting Clark or Morgan any snaps hurt the team. With better coaching, schemes, and play calling, I think the team could have won 2-3, maybe 4 more games. I applaud JD for not spending a bunch of money in FA last year. Due to Covid-19, he wasn't even sure that there would be a season, and he knew that they probably would make little or no difference in the grand scheme of things. I believe that he knew that Gase needed to go, and that Sam probably needed to go. Thus, he knew schemes would probably be changing, and there would be a lot of roster turnover going forward. He has set the Jets up for a new, golden era.

If he picks the right QB and indeed builds the offense around him rather than focusing on D like his predecessors, then we can finally have a Jets team that we all can get excited about and be proud of.

I like JD a lot more so than his predecessors which as I type I realize is not saying much. Anyway, for his sake and ours I hope the QB he chooses is the right one and pans out. I would hate for him to get fired over one bad decision cause as we’ve learned the hard way, the grass is not always greener.

Exactly! Brady is a more proven OC and QB developer. We don't know how LaFleur, Greg Knapp, and Rob Calabrese will do with the rookie, or would have done with Sam. The Jets couldn't pick up Sam's 5th year option. It is highly likely that Sam wouldn't have succeeded here due to all the pressure on him, if nothing else, but unless or until he fixes his footwork so that his accuracy improves and learns to read Ds, he doesn't stand a chance of succeeding anywhere. Even if he succeeds in Carolina, it doesn't mean that he would have here. If Wilson or Fields struggles here, it doesn't mean that they would have elsewhere. One cannot reasonably compare situations. Everything is different even if they run similar schemes. Philosophies, personalities, pressure levels, chemistry with teammates, talent level around the QB, and other things all are part of what leads to a players success or failure.

Some fan's love affair and obsession with Sam is ridiculous.

Well we’re loaded with draft picks this year and next and would have had even more if we sold off 2 overall in that scenario. Also, if Sam proved to not be the answer I would imagine we would also be picking at the top again of next season’s draft. Not to mention, who knows what vets would be available in trade.

Bottom line - We had more “outs” by selling off 2 and seeing how Darnold looked this season.

JD decided to go all in on a QB at 2 overall so he will be judged on how the QB pans out/ How Sam does in Carolina - Fair or not that will happen

I think, outside of an absolute implosion, he has two guaranteed seasons and likely three.

He's got his coach and his QB, so the clock resets and he'll get his three years. The only way I see less is if they have an Adam Gase level two seasons.
