Being a GM has moments that must be very frustrating. First, you scout then draft just a tiny fraction of the players available. You do your best to identify talent. But then you walk away and turn them over to a different employee who's job it is to nurture and develop these young men.....or not, as the case may be. Unfortunately there's a LOT of HC's who are abhorrent to playing/developing rookies. There's only one thing on their minds: Winning the game at hand. Keeping their jobs. For this I like Saleh answering directly to Joe Douglas. They aren't co-equals answering to the owner on different days. If JD has a player(s) he'd LOVE to see get involved in the game plan, one phone call should do it. He no longer has to wait until 1pm Sunday while sitting a high in the booth to find out if the guy he just drafted will ever see the field this year. Helpless to a degree. For a GM, that has to be a good feeling.
I don’t know,I could see him building a good core that stays a qb away from being a real championship contender for 6-7 years, hitting on most of the rest of his high picks the next 2 years without the 2 pick panning out.
Cam Clark is probably going to start for us this year, and Zuniga is way too soon to say anything about. Morgan reeked of Gase. Aka 2/3 of those guys could be good players. So let them actually say hi before you say bye.
Joe D is using strategies that were used by some well respected GMs in football. His scoring system was used by Ozzie who learned it when he worked under Bellichick in Cleveland, his drafting a developmental QB in 4th round was a staple of Ron Wolfs drafting philosophy. Not every pick is going to be a day one starter, some of these players need 2 or even 3 years to reach their ceiling even if that ceiling is special teams or back up. I would be very happy if Jets complete team were comprised of starters and backups that were drafted by GM and not be out of football in 2 years.
Yes!!! After 1 FA period, and 1 draft to evaluate, as a Jets fan I want a new GM. (We can’t evaluate the 2nd FA period until they play football) I am disgusted that we made picks that didn’t start a single game last year. I don’t care if Morgan and Clark were “free picks” acquired by suave trades, I will continue to be disgusted. When I look back at all the other 5th and 6th rd picks from last year who went to the pro bowl I become more and more irate. If JD doesn’t draft who I want him to, I will demand he get fired. If we don’t pick 11 starters or don’t make it to the playoffs, I will start rooting for a team that does. Enough is enough!
@Bellys Lies lies 'When JD was hired Gase had total control of the Jets He was GM and coach. He probably had as much to say about getting JD a 6 yr contract as anyone.' Gased and Confused 'That's False' @abyzmul 'Wrong' Do you understand now? What @Bellys Lies Lies stated was not false, Gase had total control of the team for about a month as he was HC and interim GM after Mac got sacked. It had nothing to do with the rest of your sentence but the fact you said 'That's false' when what @Bellys Lies said wasn't false in the slightest.
And for posterity, let the record show that Gase was acting GM for a month by brilliantly getting Mac fired, the one and only positive thing he contributed to the Jets on their road to arguably our worst performance ever
I wouldn't even credit him with that tbh what an awful, awful appointment. In that month he was doing things interim GM's wouldn't be doing normally, knowing a real GM was on their way, I can't remember what he did now, signed some crap and released others but it is just a vague memory in a sea of nightmarish thoughts
I was really down on Zuniga when we drafted him but if there was ever a chance he could be successful it would be under Saleh and with actual edge pass rushers like Lawson and Curry. If he could just be a rotational guy at his 3rd round price it wouldn’t be a hit nor a miss. I think where Douglas screwed up was the James Morgan pick. They could have gotten Gabe Davis would was extremely solid receiver in Buffalo and is why I was big on double dipping at receiver last year. Since we are drafting a QB at #2, we hopefully didn’t scout long shot QBs in the mid rounds.
I don’t feel JD is on the clock just yet. I think he has this draft and next to execute his plan. He’s got till 2024. If this team is not at least a playoff team by then he’s toast. That’s a super long leash but it’s what this franchise needs.
Didn't Gase cut/trade Darron Lee? Our former first round pick? Like around the day he got announced interim.
I believe you are right but I don't think Lee garnered much love on here. He traded him for a 6th rounder to KC lol
