i was on the herm bandwagon, i didnt want him to leave, but what we got in return (Leon Washington and Eric Mangini) turned out to be a a great move for us and now i belive this team could be a championship caliber team for the next 10 years under Mangini.
I hated him from the beginning -- how could a HC know nothing about clock managment? Man, he is a perfect example, you play to bearly lose the game in last 2 min. Herm for Leon Washington and Eric Mangini is the best trade in Jets history.
I was originally on the Herm bandwagon. I didn't really understand the game as well back then and didn't see the flaws in his coaching. Then the San Diego and Pittsburgh playoff games happened and I saw the major flaws in his coaching style. Then, in 2005, the team went into the toilet. That wasn't completely Herm's fault but the fact that the team completely gave up and showed no signs of life was Herm's fault. I was very happy to see him gone.
I am in your court here to the tee. The only difference is that I was very glad to get Herm outta here. Then we actually got a forth round pick to boot. Gravy. That gravy, turned out to materialize into Leon Washington. We may have lost on MNF if not for that twist of fate.
I wanted him gone early last season so bad when he and Heimerloser gave up on the Jets and played "a punt is good" football. I was so happy when the rumours started about KC and he weasled his way to KC. My fear was we were going to retread some loser like Tice, but in the end we were incredibly bold and I loved the move. No one was sure whether he would work out or not, but we went for a home run with the coach and not a guaranteed single with a retread. I also think that Herm has been hated for longer than most realize, we just bought into his blaming others for his weaknesses (Hackett, Cottrell, etc...) but last year was eye opening and we saw the light that Herm was the problem all along.
Bill Simmons is the man. From his page 2 column: "Random note: Congrats to Herm Edwards for turning Larry Johnson into the modern-day Earl Campbell. Four hundred carries in one season?!?!?!?!?!?!?? Did you know he's 27 carries away from breaking Jamal Anderson's record of 410? Here's how many carries Jamal had the following season: 19. I can't get over this. Let's say John Gibbons switched to a four-man rotation this spring and Roy Halladay cracked the 300-inning mark by Labor Day. Would an hour go by without somebody on "Baseball Tonight" or ESPN.com or Baseball Prospectus mentioning how absolutely insane this was? Meanwhile, we have Herm running poor LJ into the ground and everything's cool. Even if they end up making the playoffs, he's going to be a carcass by mid-January. Ridiculous. Why does this stuff make me so angry?"
I was pro-herm while he was here based solely on the fact that he made the playoffs more than any other Jet coach. While I couldnt see firing a coach who was leading the team to the playoffs when his starting qb was healthy, once he decided to leave -- I shed no tears. I thought we would be better off as long as we didnt hire Haslett or Martz.
This thread is a bunch of garbage. Besides Champ, 3rd and myself, all of you guys wanted him gone...we wanted him to stay. I await his rearrival back to the Jets with open arms. It will be a true Billy Martin type experience as Herm trots back onto the field. The crowd roars wtih delight as Herm grabs the microphone and announces that the Jets will go back to playing JET FOOTBALL BABY. He then will grab a football..take a knee at midfield. Its just a dream baby.
I wanted him to stay. I was wrong. Though to be fair I wanted him to stay when the rumored replacements were guys like Mike Sherman and Mike Tice, I'd still prefer Herm over them. Jets took a chance with Mangini and it paid off.
During training camp Herm had this guy who calls himself Captain Jet (in full superhero costume) in front of all the news media come out on the field during team drills... the team charged at him (jokingly) and it was played on all the sports segments that night on the news... truely a douche-chill moment and indicitive of the "Club Ed" environment that was training camp
I was dissapointed when Herm left cause i didnt think it was his fault Chad was getting hurt.I got over when Mangini came aslong as he was gonna be a Bilicheck guy a eventually lead us to a super bowl.Honestly i was really mad when Donnie Henderson left i really couldnt find a reason why he had to us cause he was the amin reason our defense was ranked 4th in the league in 04. He was under a 3-4 scheme in Baltimore and if he satyed we would be even better on dfense then we are now, and maybe would have a couple more wins against teams we were so close to beating like Indy and Cleveland.
I admit I thought Herm deserved another year, though I guess he didn't want to be here. 3 playoff appearances I thought he earned another season.
I'm a little late, but I was going to post the exact same thing. I'm sick of talking about Herm though, I'm glad he's gone.
