The Saints have given Hill a 4 year $140 million dollar extension. It saves them over $7 million in cap space this season and all 4 years are voidable at any time.
All years after this one are voidable however that works. What I don't quite understand is why he would do it? I guess he fully believes he can beat Jameis out in camp and earn that money.
It really isn't. It's just a move to save $7.75 mill against the cap this year. Each of the 4 years voids. Now they just need to clear $15 mill more, plus $10 mill for draft prospects, and a little more for the 25 free agents they have.
What about not signing him? I get the yearly void option but they could have done nothing, waited for the draft and put a plan in place for a veteran like Alex Smith to come in and hold down the fort until Hill or a drafted QB developed. It just feels like they could have saved that money and put it to better use.
And paid him all his guaranteed money this year? They are desperate to free up cap space. Half their roster is on backloaded contracts.
I get why they did it, they gave him a first round tender, gave him a two year deal that totaled 21 million dollars. Now are trying to gain some relief, my point from the beginning was why even commit to this guy, he’s a Swiss Army knife as a player. If he was Farve just waiting for his opportunity I get it, but it was a bad financial commitment from the beginning. Saints are going to be a hurting team for a while.
Your post I replied to didnt express anything like that. You suggested they add Alex Smith or draft a QB. It's the game the Saints have been playing for a few years now. They never expected the cap to go down. Had a stacked roster and could afford a luxury player. That changed quickly
