http://youtube.com/watch?v=viUJ48rCJ38 Above is a deep pass from Chad to R.Moss in a 1997 Marshall game. I was looking for Chad videos prior to his surgery days thru youtube. Theres a few that might be interesting to look at. My conclusion was that his arm strength definitely has taken a hit after two surgeries. I am not so sure if he can now make that throw that was shown above. I was also looking for what Espn said when Chad got drafted. If his arm strength was even mentioned. I really don't think that if his arm strength was this bad during the prescout combine would he had been a first round pickl. He led Marshall to a perfect record and a win at the GMC bowl. Other notes to know he was the first qb drafted that year. Anyone that can find videos about Chad or if u can find the ESPN clip that they have on every draft pick prior to when they get drafted it would be great.
4 scouting reports. http://archive.profootballweekly.com/content/archives/draft_1999/prospects_qb_020200.asp http://www2.jsonline.com/packer/rev/apr00/quarterback-chadpennington.asp http://206.67.55.17/fbcollege2000.htm http://si.cnn.com/football/nfl/2000/nfldraft/players/19326.html
thanx a lot. The scouting report is pretty accurate on him. His College statistics is a good resemblence of how he is doing now. Lastly of all people we gotta thank al groh for drafting him.
I believe Bill Parcells drafted him as one of those 4 first rounders we had that year. I just saw We Are Marshall...pretty good, and it has a classic Chad video at the end
In all honesty I think that Chad's arm strength has gone down THIS YEAR. It is very possible that it is just fatigue and will take him another year to fully revover and be able to throw with the velocity he had in the first 2 games for an entire season. I think there will be another open competiton next year between Clemens and Penny and it will be interesting to see unfold.
We don't have anyone with the combination of height and separation speed that he had that one year with Moss (4.28 40) and later with another burner named James Williams. That makes throwing the deep sideline pattern much easier. People often don't realize that Chads best years were the 2 after Moss left for the NFL. But he and Moss together (both Sophomores) were something to watch. To be honest Chad has never had a GUN for an arm but he could make those long throws based on timing and the fact he expected his receivers to run past people. His arm strength is noticeably less since the 2 operations - hopefully he'll regain it with time and the summer to rest the arm.
I think we and even myself keep forgetting that Chad had two shoulder surgeries. If he gets some strength in the arm during the off-season which im sure he will he could just come back stonger and better.
"To get a first-round quarterback and not jeopardize the other needs of the team, it was too juicy to pass up," coach Al Groh said. "We're looking at ourselves for the long range. It keeps us from getting into the position where everything else is in place and we don't have a quarterback" We selected Shaun Ellis and John Abraham that year too with 12 and 13th and I believe Anthony Becht with the 27 th pick. Chad was the 18th pick
Note that the last QB mentioned in the first scouting report is some kid from Michigan named Brady. I also liked the quote from Ernie Accorsi in the third report on why they preferred Ron Dayne to Shaun Alexander. How'd that work out for you, Ernie?
Also from the fbcollege2000 scouting report (which is a fantasy football one, by the way): 1 out of 2 ain't bad. I didn't remember just how many black marks there were against him coming into the NFL. It's pretty clear that he completely remade himself once he got to the pros. Yet another person who missed Brady, although it is interesting to see the part about leadership.
You know...there was another QB who became a big star with r. moss on his team, and when moss left, so did his stats.
CP went undefeated and won the GMC ball all without R. Moss. R. Moss was in the NFL by this time. Thank you for being irrelevant. Also CP has taken the Jets to the playoffs and about to do so again.
can we, as jets fans, really mock another GM??? kyle brady....2 words that should bring any one of us back to earth.
It is important to look at how he did it. He really took the time to set himself and step into the pass with follow through. He doesn't always do it like that now. That is part of the observed weakness. He still needs to work on mechanics. Something he alluded to in the beginning of the year. Granted, I am sure the surgeries have set him back some, but I am satisfied with where he is at currently.
