Well said. On the surface it may not appear to us that there is anything "racist" happening, but again, I have heard several people say something is off in the building with sensitivity to race. Question. Answer honestly. Would you find it strange that if in 5 years, 80% of NHL GMs and coaches were black? There is a clear issue with opportunity in the NFL that only 2 GMs and what, 3-4 coaches are people of color. So it's not about they are racist because they hired a white GM. That's a very simplistic way of looking at it. It's that 80% of players are black yet, but the narrative is that there just aren't any qualified black front office execs and/or coaches to hire? And with like you said the optics around the Texans with a series of odd moves/non moves, you can hopefully understand the perspective of some saying their is an issue there. It doesn't have to get to Donald Sterling levels of overt racism to make someone feel like maybe this is not an organization they want to be a part of. It's not easy ti understand when you haven't been in that position. And sorry I don't want to hijack this thread on the topic so I will make this my last post about the racism angle, but I live and breath it daily. I am the only back VP level exec in my company and me and the CEO talk about this all the time. The guy and my partners are the furthest thing from racist, yet he talks constantly about there being a huge problem with perception, unconscious bias and yes, racism when hiring high level execs in companies like ours. He says he knows we have an issue and the number show it and we are actively doing something to change that. But good convo for sure. Respect to your perspective and thoughts. OK, back to getting #4 in the building!
It’s going to be at least another two months of speculation. This thread is going to by 500 pages by then.
Anyway, whether the Texans are racist or not, bottom line is, he thinks the organization is a piece of shit and he wants out.
Well you have to look at the Texans organization. The Jets have been a laughingstock for years but ultimately that has been equal parts the Jets own dysfunction and media storylines. What the Texans have managed to do over the past 3 years or so is exponentially more dysfunctional than anything we’ve seen from any other franchise in such a concentrated time frame. -Booted Franchise LT Duane Brown for a 5th, future 2nd, and a backup CB -Booted 1st overall pick Jadeveon Clowney for a 3rd and two backup LBs -Booted DeAndre Hopkins and a 4th for a 2nd and a washed up expensive RB -Drafted a bust LT replacement -Spent two 1sts and a 2nd for an LT and a WR3, and then set the market for LT with a new contract. -Spent a 2nd on Brandin Cooks. -Promptly couldn’t afford half of their defensive players who left. -Won’t be able to retain their best WR’s. -Personally alienated their top 5 QB after signing him to a large contract. -Even Texans fans can’t blame this guy for trying to get out.
Well in all honesty, I'd love to see the numbers regarding black coaches and scouts and their participation in actively getting involved in coaching/scouting as it pertains to former players. I don't know that we have that data available. I would say it's possible that a lot of former players, regardless of race, just can't wait to get away from the grind of an NFL season. And being that most of the league is black, one of the only ways into the league for white people is going to be the scouting/coaching route which puts them at an advantage from starting at a younger age. There are stories like Ryan Pace, standing outside the combine begging for a badge to get into the combine and eventually working his way up. Given that the data would show us that there are a lot more white people in this country than black people and subsequently more rabid fans trying to get into the sport, it could make sense as to why the numbers are skewed in one direction. Not sure any of that's true though. Just offering up some thoughts. Agreed though man. Glad we could keep it civil and certainly respect the hell out of your opinions and any struggles you have faced in your life and obviously persevered through to achieve great success. Cheers.
That furthers the point of horrible personnel decisions leading to his push out of the organization over anything to do with racism.
I'll give them credit where credit is due on Clowney. I've never liked him as player and I've thought he has been living off of that one hit vs Michigan up until this past offseason to be honest. Besides that, there actually are organizations that are more dysfunctional than the Jets. The Jaguars, Browns (up until the past two to three years), Lions, and Texans are all significantly worse. They traded one of the best wide receivers in the league for peanuts and an injury prone RB with an awful contract.
Not retaining him isn’t the issue, in fact they wanted to extend him at the time. At that point they should have been able to get much more in trade return. Back then he had a few monster playoff games and he was looked at with a much higher value
We cant ignore the facts because we could get a pro bowl QB. Watson signs a contract and then declines to deliver on the service. That's a dirty deal, especially considering he gets to keep the money and screw the other party out of 25 million. Politics isn't an excuse for not living up to your responsibility. You just don't break contracts because you get angry. If any Jet player did it I wouldn't want them even associated with the team. There are a lot of apologists for a man who is going back on a contract he signed.
I can't even answer this pole, because there is no way we should give up the #2 pick for him. Why would we want him and why would he want to come here? Seriously the jets have been a cellar dweller for a long time, if Watson is so great, no way in hell he wants to play for the Jets? Keep Sam and trade back to get more picks. Give Sam an offense and see what he can do. The kid is 23 years old.
Yes the Jets wouldn't be in a rebuild because they gave it away for a QB. You plug holes with FAs, not rebuild with them. The notion that the Watson trade is a one trade rebuild is insanity.
You can definitely tell who the Darnold fans are in this thread. Great kid but he blows. I don't care who you surround him with, he still won't be able to read a defense. Then throw in the awful red zone interceptions and inexcusable sacks when he should have just thrown the ball away. It blows my mind people still think he can be good. Are multiple same year 1st round picks the only way to rebuild a team? With many of the trade scenarios posted, we still have 2 of the 5 #1s over the next 3 years and almost ALL of our other picks in the other rounds (in some rounds multiple picks like this years 3rd and 5th round and a possible second 2nd or 3rd for Sam) to build the team. If we are only counting on 1st rounders to build this team, we are doomed and Douglas isn't going to be here in 3 years.
Here are the KC Chiefs, who I think we can all agree is one of the top 2 teams in football, 1st round picks the last decade: 2010 - Eric Berry 2011 - Jon Baldwin 2012 - Dontari Poe 2013 - Eric Fisher 2014 - Dee Ford 2015 - Marcus Peters 2016 - No 1st 2017 - Mahomes 2018 - No 1st 2019 - No 1st 2020 Clyde E Helaire Anything stick out about this list?
Some people can’t grasp the idea that the Jets are able to trade 3 1s and a 2 for Watson and still have picks in every round, especially since Darnold would be on the move for a 2 in that scenario. 21 picks in 3 years + 60-70M in cap is plenty to build the team.
Fisher and Ford were good picks. Fisher is one of the better OTs in the league and Ford is no longer on the Chiefs. Berry was a really good safety but once he got cancer his career trajectory tanked, which of course isn’t a knock on him. Take Mahomes out of those picks and their first round looks quite bad mediocre.
That the Chiefs have had a complete team for a decade now and haven't had to rebuild. But when they pick #1 they usually get a stud?
exactly. They drafted well in other rounds, got their QB, and used FA to build the best team in football. YES, 1st rounders are important. But they arent the ONLY way to build a team. Draft well in the middle rounds, get GREAT coaching, find your franchise QB and you can win consistently. Why have the Jets been a bad franchise for 50+ years? Bad coaching, not drafting well in the middle rounds, and not having a franchise QB.
