I'm not a big college ball guy. Ya, I watched a few games at the end to see Trevor and Justin. Watched Mac the last game too. I'm not good enough to analyze arm angle, release points, blah blah.

Sometimes I think these QB analysts get so caught up in minute details like elbow placement on the non-throwing arm and crap like that that they miss the forest for the trees.

I'm more of an 'eye test' guy. If the QB looks great making throws from the pocket and also on the run, that's good enough for me. I like those 2 rookie QBs playing for chargers and bengals. Those kids looked really good (to me!).

Sticking with Sam is the riskiest decision they can make. If that is the decision I would think their conviction is pretty strong that he can be a good QB in this system. I’d support the decision, they just better be right or else we’ll be looking for another GM/HC combo in 3 years.

I am worried about that as well. Jones seems like a very decent prospect. He probably compares favorably to Tua. Less mobile and less athletic, but has a decent arm and size, and not injury prone. Extremely accurate. Only one year starter on a great team, but there is some potential there, which hopefully will be taken by someone before Patriots are on the clock.

Think of this situation like this. Say Lawrence didn't declare, and Darnold is possibly on a trading block for a 3d round pick. A coach comes to Jags and says like Urban just did, that getting a right QB is the most important decision in a lifetime of a GM, etc... Do you think there is a big chance Jags would say, let's see if we can get Darnold for a 3d round pick from the Jets, as he was 3d overall before, mismanaged there and has potential? Then we use our top pick to get more assets, and screw Fields and whoever else is there at QB in the draft? Do you really think that would be a likely QB approach for them? And if the answer is no, why the heck would it be for us, as we are in nearly identical situation as I just described?

If they decide to stick with Sam, the decision may have nothing to do with Sam. It may have far more to do with what's coming out of college.

If they keep Sam a year or so, it could be seen as temporary. But if they draft say Fields with the 2nd overall, that's it. They live and die by that one decision. If Fields fails to get the team to at least the AFCCG by year 3, they'll be in the same situation with Fields that they are now with Sam. Do they bring Fields back for yr 4 and sign his 5h yr? Move on? blah blah. But Joe Douglas will be hanging his career on Fields if he takes him.

live not seen Lance play so I can’t comment on him, and admittedly I’ve only seen Fields in like three games, but you’ve summed up my feelings on Fields to a tee. He’s made great throws, but on 95% of them it’s exactly like you said....all the time in the world, no one in his face, and his receivers were literally wide open...not a defender in the picture. It just has zero connection to the NFL where that will happen like 1% of the time.

all this talk about HAVING to take a FQB....it all comes down to if you believe Fields or Wilson or Lance are franchise QBs. I get the allure of the shiny new highly drafted QB. I get Sam has sucked behind a shit OL with shit receivers and RBs and shit coaching. Personally, I don’t think Fields would have looked any different in the same situation. We’ll never know, of course, but that’s how I feel.

I just don’t see Fields as a real true franchise QB....he’s played in a stacked program with killer OL who give him all day to throw, playing against clearly weaker competition who couldn’t stay with his receivers. I will admit I loved what I saw in that Clemson game....toughness, leadership, moxie, will, etc. so I wouldn’t be pissed off if JD and Saleh go get him, but I don’t think he’s going to be that elite promised land QB that people are hoping for.

name the last great Ohio State QB. I can’t think of one. DeWayne Haskins, Cordelle Jones, who else? It a single quality NFL QB. There’s gotta be a reason. That school develops RBs, OL, defense, receivers from time to time...but not QBs

Fields is a one read Qb in a stacked team and still looked shaky this year. Pass.

Fields is poor at anticipating the play. He has the ability to extend play with his running and the talent surrounding him is exceptional compared to his peers. But he will have some work to do and he is far from a safe bet. Ideally to maximize his talent he probably would have to play in a heavy rushing offense similar to the Ravens where he can drive offense without having to use his arms too often and exploit the defense in the occasional deep throws and simple option plays.

I am not against that but that would require an elite offensive line and great RBs too.

Jones could well be the steal of the QBs trouble is do we trade back 3-14 and grab him before the Pats
Would be a reach if we did but look at IQ on the Knicks he was a reach at mid 20 pick and they could finally have point guard they been looking for
Think Jones would be a massive gamble pick 3-14 but if can get some good assets maybe worth risking

They’re going to need to build a team eventually. No QB is elite except 2 or 3. Would Jared Goff lead this team? No. Need either talent or Deshaun imo. No Wilson or fields for me.

I wonder what the odds are we keep Darnold or draft a QB?

For sure. Watson is a QB a GM can hang his hat on. FQB without question. Fields? Probably not a FQB, but might be a GEQB. (good enough)

As far as keeping Sam and not drafting a QB this year, think for a minute if Josh McCown was still our QB, and Joe Douglas decides to continue with McCown. No one would be thinking "wow! Douglas thinks Josh can be coached up to be a FQB and win the trophy!".

Instead, fans would be thinking "This isn't the year to draft a FQB. OK, carry on with Josh while we team build and check back to the draft/FA next year, or the year after".

Even if in 2 years we have to trade up to 10 and grab the next Patrick Mahomes.

So keeping Sam is kind of like keeping McCown. JD simply doesn't love what's out there in FA or the draft. But with Sam, in addition to being a place holder, he also comes with the (small) possibility of become The Guy.

Just comes down to what JD thinks about this year's crop of QBs.

Excellent point. Most all of us don’t know shit about Morgan, matter of fact most here were pissed purple about the selection of a QB, “wasted pick” many said, but here we all are, frantic about picking a QB now.

For whatever it's worth, watching Joshy-boy fling the ball around in 2017 is probably the second most fun season I've had watching this squad since the back to back AFC championship game seasons.
