As I said, I think stability is very important, and he wouldn't give that stability. Also, I disagree that he has done a good job at Michigan.

Great video. I won't merge but maybe another mod will merge without seeing this. let's hope this stays on the main page as long as possible before we merge it to the main thread.

The HC having a say is definitely a must, but not shopping for the groceries himself as Parcells wanted to do and did. The HC shouldn't be telling JD who to draft.

In fact, JD talked about this after he was hired, I believe. He said that after the coach gives his input, that he (JD) may not draft the exact player the HC said that he wants, but that he (JD) would draft as identical a player as he could (same traits, abilities, talents).

I really don't see it that way at all. Its imperative that the GM and HC are on the same page AND COLLABORATE on the key players. Why would you jam a QB on the HC knowing that he is not what he wants, or vice versa. That is as bad as telling the future HC who the Assistant coaches should be. Either you trust your guy or you go elsewhere.

First question to every coach will probably be something along the lines of “Darnold, Fields, or Wilson and why?”

Who do you believe in and how will you get the best out of them? Douglas is a football guy, he’ll find the right guy.

Haven't heard anything about Dan Mullen or Matt Campbell yet...

was that just media speculation? There wouldn't be any delay with them, could get the hiring process going right away if they were real options

We probably won’t hear anything from the college ranks until it’s almost definite, it will mess up their recruiting classes if the public finds out about an interview.

I really don’t see Campbell as a real option. He’s building something at Iowa St and I don’t think he’s quite ready to move on yet.

I agree I think he would be a good fit. Plus his track record in the pros is very good, he’s a work aholic and gets the most out of his players. There might be a few others I would consider as well but Harbaugh should be close to the top of the list

Something I dont understand about Jim Harbaugh: The media, or expert opinion online, categorize him as someone who is abrasive and hard to work with and generally not a nice guy.

It may or may not be true but we dont hear the same things at all about John Harbaugh. He's described as a player's coach and someone people love to work with and obviously someone who is open to new ideas on the field.

Now, I know one brother can be different from another brother. But really? They are that different????

    --
do you think its possible that Jed York the 49ers CEO, who we really dont know that much about, might actually be the one who is the power hungry asshole instead of Jim Harbaugh?

I think it is the main question there is to ask! If that’s not on the table at the interview JD has power issues. The coach needs to at least voice his opinion and have input so there can be success on the Field. This needs to be a fluid relationship like Shanny/Lynch in San Fran.

I don't you would do that, but if the GM lays out clearly what his blueprint is, and the types of players he wants in it, then the prospective HC has a chance to sign up for that or decline, right? Going forward there should be no need to "jam" a player down a HC's throat.

For better or worse, I believe Douglas has a blueprint.

Also NFL Network is reporting most of these interviews because teams have to formally request them, meaning NFLN gets the inside track there. Teams don’t have to alert the NFL to interview College guys in the same way.

I’m thinking the final decision will be once woody comes back unfortunately. He’s going to have to sign off on it and I don’t think he’ll strong arm JD to lean one way or the other.

The coach has to have say on the QB though. You need to give him confidence in the team he’s getting ready to play on Sundays. It just works so much better when the Coach/GM build a team together.

If I was JD ( God forbid) I would approach it pretty strategically with questions right to the heart of the matter
IMHO the approach should be ."We are looking for a HC that has the vision and wherewithal to transform and build this young team across all phases into a long term winner" . Can you tell us what steps would you take to take us there, what type players do you see us needing to move in that direction, starting with your assessment of the Q situation for the Jets. Do you see a potential for a long term answer at QB, given Sam performance, our position on the draft versus the QBs available, and even a potential free agent veteran QB that can strengthen our roster moving forward.

Whether he did a good job in Michigan or not I think is a matter of perspective. He has been there for 6 years. 4 of these years they were ranked. Before him they had two other coaches (Rodriguez and Hoke) for 7 years. In these 7 years they were ranked twice. They never reached top 10. Jim did, and this was first time in 10 years they were top 10. He had one losing season just now, and it was Covid shortened to only 6 games, while his two predecessors did it 3 times, and on a full season (if season was longer likely Jim would not even have one). So, there is no doubt he did a lot better in 6 years than his two predecessors in 7. Is this enough? Maybe, maybe not, depending on perspective. Overall though, including his other ventures, there is no doubt Jim got significant results.

As far as stability, you can get that only if you are winning. And Jim has not lost much.

We agree that stability only comes with winning and quality coaching.

I think he's done a pretty good job at Michigan, but I think his personality hurts him in recruiting.

I could be wrong, but I'll bet if you asked Michigan alumni if they're happy with him as their HC, they'd give a resounding "No."

You might be correct on that. If he hires a offensive guy then that's likely. But if he goes with a defensive guy or a veteran NFL guy he probably stays.
There are many fine candidates. He'll take the one who wants what he wants.
