Joe the idiot thisman as his new name should be. said this morning on mike and mike that drew should be comeback player. someone correct me if i'm wrong but didn't drew play the entire season and do pretty well?? isn't comeback player for someone who missed a good portion of a season?
Brees got hurt in the last game of the year whereas CP was hurt early in the season so I think CP qualifies but DB does not
Theisman said it last night too. He also said that Carson Palmer is in the running. Palmer had a better year last year than he did this year. I don't understand how he still has a job. I never thought I would say this -- but I would take Paul McGuire over Theisman any day of the week.
Someone posted last week that as long as the player comes back from an injury/bad play, they qualify and both Palmer and Brees were hurt last year, even though it was incredibly late.
It's funny listening to these commentators. They have NO CLUE about the game. They cite playoff scenarios that aren't true, they cite facts that never happened, etc. The avg football fan has no idea so they just shake their head and say how knowledgable they are. The only thing about Kornheiser I like (I can't stand him really) is he'll call Theismann out when he's being inconsistent. Sometimes it's stupid (I don't know how he left the ground without leaving his feet... all true, but I think we all knew Theismann's point) but other times it makes perfect sense (Theismann sat there saying he could not make throws, so Kornheiser asked why they called the plays and Theismann then started blaming the receivers. He kept after him, and then when Pennington hit Cotchery for the 33yd TD, Theismann tried to sayhow complete Pennington is..)
That is true, unfortunately. Palmer missed 0 regular season time, and Brees missed about a half. That's hardly coming back. Yes, they came back from their injuries, but it's not like the injury killed their season. (REGULAR Season.. Palmer's injury gave Pittsburgh the super bowl)
Guys both injuries could have ended their careers. It wasn't a high ankle sprain or something. They both could just as easily have been out of football this year. That's not to diminish the comeback Chad has had though. He's had a very good year overall, in success terms. Chad deserves the award, but if Brees won it, especially with being shown the door and taking a team who was as bad as us last year to the division title, I wouldn't complain. I would complain if Mangini loses Coach of the Year though.
2 new coaches I hadn't thought of for COTY are Jeff Fischer and Andy Reid. I don't really think Reid deserves it, but the Titans who were 0-5 can now finish 2 games over .500, that is a hell of a coaching job by Fischer.
brees had the same injury chad had so why wouldnt he be in the running for comeback player of the year?.
I don't think being "eligible" has anything to do with it - there are no formal criteria for the award, so anyone is eligible. It's completely a matter of opinion for the voters. That allows me to say what my opinion is. IMO, players like Brees and Palmer are not reasonable candidates, since they played full years last year. As Alio noted, these were both major injuries, and they (and the doctors and trainers) deserve great credit for them being able to play at a high level this year, but my personal opinion is that the comeback player should be coming back from a poor regular season performance (whether that is due to injury or just poor play). But again, that's just an opinion - Palmer and Brees are certainly "eligible" for the award. I think Pennington would be very deserving, and I do think that (especially if the Jets win next week) he's got a good shot to get it. Since phubbadaman brought up COY, I agree that Fischer and Reid are two other potential candidates. I doubt that Fischer will get any consideration - I think most people lay the resurgence of that team squarely at the feet of Vince Young (who I believe will win ROY in a landslide). I'll bet Reid won't get a lot of consideration either, but I think he deserves it. If any fans should know how tough it is to keep a team together when their starting QB goes down, it's Jets fans. I expect Payton to win COY by a pretty wide margin, and I think Mangini has an excellent shot at finishing second.
I agree with the premise here, and I'll take it one further. Drew Brees might have had a devastating injury, but he was sought and paid well in free agency. Chad, conversely, had his team acquire another starter-quality quarterback, and use a second round pick on his future successor, while having his contract restructured downward. In terms of overcoming low expectations, and actually "coming back," this isn't even a close call.
The only reason I think Brees might get it is they'd want to give him something, and it's really, really hard not to give the MVP to LT this year. So they'd just give LT the MVP and Brees the Comeback player award. I don't think VY gets the ROTY, but I sure as hell hope Bush or Leinart don't get it. I think they might give it to Colston, but he's cooled off as of late I believe. I personally think VY should win it easily though.
Yeah the media really is not understanding the concept of this award. McNabb got hurt last year but it was never a career threatening injury, Brees missed one game basically, Palmer got hurt in the playoffs... Chad was the one who's career was in dought and missed 13 games. McNabb, Brees and Palmer both had better years than Chad, but I don't think they even qualify for the award. Chad should get it based on those reasons. I think McNabb would quality for next year's comeback award should he come back effectively. The knee injuries are major these days.
