They brought the Vikings to overtime and there records are the same.I have faith...Jax will beat the Bears i said this weeks ago.
What free agents has he struck out on? He didn't try to sign any top tier ones the sole year he was in charge for the start of FA - which was a clear strategic decision - and didn't take over until well after the draft and free agency was virtually over the year before. The only guys he signed were ones he had to persuade to come out of retirement. The only player he conceivably struck out on was Anderson.
He's only potentially "struck out" on one year of free agents. He didn't handle 2019's free agency, Maccagnan did. You could also argue, correctly I'd say, that he had a great deal of foresight to deal out some one year deals to lesser free agents in a pandemic-stricken offseason, knowing that the team wouldn't be very good anyway, no matter what he did, thereby setting himself up with a lot of contracts coming off the books for the 2021 season, a higher draft pick than the #6 or so pick he may have otherwise ended up with, and managing to be one of the teams who will actually have cap space after the cap drops due to no fans being in the stands this season. He's handled this offseason quite well, I'd say.
Bringing back Alex Lewis and signing Greg Van Roten to be the starting guards was a swing and a miss. All while cutting Brian Winters. Not that I know whether Winters has been spectacular or not but he is starting for them. McGovern has played better as of late and could be a victim of bad guard play, but I'd say he's been rather uninspiring this year. I was happy about the signing too but he's been pretty bad for 2/3rds of the year. I do think that he played this off-season more slowly because of the pandemic as well as realizing how many holes this roster has. But he hasn't been flawless to the point of no criticism. I don't know if it worked out for the better either but I really do think he traded down to draft Van Jefferson and it blew up when the Rams grabbed him before us. We were all over him in the draft and it felt like Mims would go ahead of him. Again - not sure if it worked out for the better or not.
Lewis I never got the love for, so I would definitely agree there. Van Roten was terrible to start with but seemed to be playing much better in the weeks before his injury along with McGovern and I saw some stats that seemed to back that up somewhere as well. Sadly I can't remember exactly where. I tend toward thinking the disrupted off season was the big factor with this. But, in general, these were mid-low tier signings rather than top level ones. I certainly don't think Winters would have made a big difference either way.
You're right. And I think one of the smarter decisions he made was not panicking and overpaying for a player just to fill a deficiency. I guess I just felt like there was some more aggressive value to be had in terms of Glasgow, Conklin, etc. I also would've liked to have seen us retain Shell. Not that he's a world beater but he was good enough to be the third tackle (even though McDermott has been OK).
you have your priorities mixed up. instead of worrying about the GM, you should be worried about the owners.
I'm thinking douglas is alright and if the past is indicative of the future then he will do good things in the 2021 draft. What do you think we could get for the number 2 pick? I'm thinking a first, a second and 2022 first from the bears or falcons. Edited for grammar.
I understand the whole purging the team of talent, however, you would think like a great talent evaluator, we would see some good oline players out there. Pieces we could build on, Becton was a no brainer. Even if they were short term free agents , it would be great if they showed enough talent to want us to re-sign them. It would be nice to see some no-name studs making us go who is that on defense and special teams. It is easy to tear down a roster, a year and a half into JDs tenure I do not see much of his fingerprint on this team towards rebuilding. We have maybe a handful of players, maybe even less that will be here in 2024. Of what JD has brought in Becton, Mims, and Mann. Three players in a yr and a half. He needs is be almost perfect with the draft and free agency over the next two yrs to build us into a decent football team. Since JD has come here we have lost Leonard Williams, Jamal Adams, Winters, R Anderson,Bell, Mosely(even though on the roster has said f u to jets powers to be). If we hit on free agency in the next 2 yrs it will be hard to replace what we have lost. Plus we have destroyed our number 3 overall pick at qb in Sam. JD has a lot of work cut out for himself to even bring us back to the talent level he inherited the team at.
I think you need to read my post a bit better.. I said he did everything he could to try and make his job easier with all the cuts and trades. I don’t think he wants to loose on purpose but that doesn’t mean he can’t strip the team down to rookies and soft mores to see what we have in those players in a lost season.
Between Williams and Adams we gave up 18 sacks this yr/ and we are still looking for a pass rusher It would have been fun to watch Leonard,Q and Adams develop. It is going to be hard for JD to replace
Hard to get a bunch of sacks as a 3-4 DE. Giants have used him a lot more creatively this season than we ever did. And with that said, it' not like we're hurting on the DL. It's the best position group on the team between Q, JFM, and Foley. Shepherd and Phillips do a good enough job as rotational players too. It's the linebacking corps that's an absolute tragedy. It's incredible how well flat passes and sweeps worked against our defense this year.
