Why does it seem like everyone is so interested in replacing all of our young players? Talking about Adam Archuleta, Terrell Owens, Willie McGinest, Isaac Bruce? No, no, no, and no. We really aren't likely to contend next year and if we do, I think it really just means that we're a step ahead in the rebuilding process. Bringing in players listed above is what a team near a championship needs to do. We are not near a championship and just because we are seemingly way below the cap doesn't mean that signing all these players puts us in playoff contention. Many teams try and build through free agency and they fail. Look at the Redskins prior to this year, and how the Vikings always flop. They draft poorly and try to cover it up by throwing millions at players. The only place we could use some experience at is quarterback and I wouldn't be opposed to drafting someone or bringing in a Patrick Ramsey, Josh McCown or even a Luke McCown type to try out and see how they do. I really don't think that signing Jon Kitna is going to do anything for is. He's nearing the end of his career and he would be best fitted to go somewhere like the Vikings that have a solid offense. Why not give Bollinger another shot? I know that he didn't have a spectacular season, however the rest of our offense was pitiful. No one can deny that he really showed signs of life this year when you thought to yourself "this kid could be something." Lack of a running game ruined Bollinger and since I don't think we'd be contending why do we need to bring in an old mediocre veteran quarterback like Kitna, or Aaron Brooks for example. Again... Build through the draft, not free agency. Bringing in Kitna is like resigning Jay Fiedler. I'd also say no to Culpepper for the simple fact that the guy simply can't read coverages. Most of his passes to Moss were screens or deep balls which elevated his stats. He has a very limited ability when it comes to looking off safeties, one of the main reasons he played pitifully this year. One other thing I'd like to address is John Abraham. All I see is these "Yay we're 45 billion dollars under the cap." Well that's fantastic, but why in gods name would we now NOT resign a top five pass rusher in the league? With coaching he can play in either the 3-4 or the 4-3. Mixing him, Bryan Thomas and Shaun Ellis up in the various formations would confuse the shit out of coordinators since they all have unique styles and techniques to playing the line and outside linebacker. The only real free agent acquisition that should be supported is LeCharles Bentley, whom is one of the best centers in the league at roughly 26 years old. He has a lot of starting experience and certainly has great quickness and size for a center. The guy is a mauler, plain and simple, but can also move to the outside and pull. The other is that nose tackle from Baltimore. He can play in the 3-4 and as one poster stated "a 3-4 is not fixable without a nose tackle" endquote credit to that poster. As far as the draft goes, I'm also a bit annoyed at a lot of people who just want to settle with certain players at certain positions. For example, Pete Kendall at guard. Yes he can play this year, but that doesn't mean he's going to be here forever. We must address guard in a draft full of great lineman. Outside linebacker is a need, unless of course we switch to a 3-4 which in that case, Victor Hobson will do fine at strongside middle linebacker. We can't settle for Jones at right tackle in my opinion either, unless we go into a zone blocking scheme. It's not even because Jones is too small, it's because he has a small frame to begin with and he is not strong enough. Left ends, going against right tackles are usually the LARGER defensive ends who bullrush. They run over small tackles like Jones. Speed rushers usually play right end, hence why left tackles need to be quick in setting up. With more coaching Jones is almost equal to D'Brickashaw Ferguson Lastly you have to go with the best player available in the draft, until maybe the 4th-5th rounds. Reaching for players is usually the worst thing you can do in a draft even though we have been fortunate with Vilma, and somewhat fortunate with Robertson. Go with the best player available. It'd be way too awesome if George Kokinis would meet with us before the draft, because he knows how to look for players and take the best guy available (Jamal Lewis, Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, Adalius Thomas, Terrell Suggs, Casey Rabach, Mark Clayton, etc.) have all been drafted by Kokinis since he is the Ravens personel specialist. He will bring the third piece to our front office, as well as experience to a young group.
aechuleta could be the kind leader in our secondary we need. this guy plays with a fire. when he hit you feel it. that is what i call a upgrade especially over coleman who is solid but nothing spectacular. that owens, bruce, mcginest stuff is just garbage it just something to talk about before free agency starts.
One of the better posts I've read in the last year. I agree with everything except Abraham and FA - the guy is a tool - he openly said that he'd try to sign the tender to push the Jets over the cap if they were close. Plus, he's been nothing but a dick with the whole whining, not feeling wanted, not playing because of pussy little injuries, etc. As far as FA, I feel that Kevin Shaffer would be a great addition, although you never said anything against him, it's more of an addition to what you said.
Yeah, and Archuleta is just like Roy Williams. He may hit hard, but he is awful in coverage. I'd take Coleman over Archuleta in a deep zone coverage anyday and thats even when Coleman is slow to react. Not to mention Archuleta will be leaving his prime when we are ready to contend. Sometimes it's better to let the young guys figure it out themselves and if not, let the coaches handle it. Veteran leadership can be very overrated. If the player is average, then I really don't want him teaching my young guys. It's similar to the Reggie Tongue signing. NO!
couldnt be said better my friend. I also wouldnt mind getting Schaffer from the falcons or Ashworth from the Pats
archutleta was a pro bowl alternate last year far from average. rhodes would hide archuleta his range is crazy.
My wish list is Kitna, Shaffer, and one of the DTs. Putting Owens, Bruce, etc. on our cap would be a waste of cap space.
Well, I'm not completely against Schaeffer, nor am I against Ashworth especially. However I really only want to bring in Schaeffer if he is rather cheap, and we are going with a more athletic approach to coaching the offensive line rather than the traditional Parcells/Belicheck way which is line up and knock'em over. Me, I really like the way the Steelers, Cowboys and Jaguars play so I'm partial to the tough nosed knock'em over football. Tom Ashworth would be an excellent addition. And as far as Archuleta goes, a pro-bowl is useless. Coleman/Rhodes/Washington need to develop. Archuleta will only be taking playing time away from our very young secondary.
i agree with you about not bringing in any big name older veterans, and the Jets 100% will never even look at somone like archuletta, but then you go off about something very confusing.....how can you start the paragraph talking about how we need to fill our Oline with young guys this draft and bring someone in to replace Kendall(which is fine) but then say a comment like Adrian Jones"could almost be as good as Ferguson with some coaching"??First of im sure if you ask any Olinemen coach in the NFL and tell them that, they will laugh at you but secondly you want to add some young Olinemen in the draft but then you want to not draft Ferguson, because we have adrian jones a 4th round tackle who isnt even really a tackle, He is a project that even if he ever become an average linemen he will never be a solid Left Tackle which is the most important position on the Oline.
im glad 2 c all the delusional Jets fans who want bruce and mcginest and want to trade 4 culpepper and sign etc. r not logged in
The fact is, is that Adrian Jones is in the same exact mold of D'Brickashaw Ferguson. I understand it came out weird the way I typed it, so I'll elaborate. I really don't understand all the hate for A-Jones. He was by far our best offensive lineman and shutdown the likes of Terrell Suggs (0.5 sacks), Simeon Rice (1 sack on a stunt which is faulted to the guard), and Aaron Schobel after being moved back to his natural position at left tackle. Adrian Jones is still learning how to play the position which is why I said he is similar to Ferguson. Who cares if he was a fourth round pick? That doesn't mean he can't be a good tackle. Ferguson and AJ have similar potential which is why I do not see why an upgrade is needed. We need to fill needs at right tackle, and center before we can even touch our left tackle position.
Archuleta is a bigger, faster John Lynch...he isn't old he's 27 or 28 I think. He gets snubbed from the Pro-Bowl every year.
the stats dont do much for me, because he also gave up a few sacks to Jason Taylor WHen they played miami 2nd time around and he gave up 1 or 2 to peppers when they played them. So forget the stats, and I understand your point of view, which is the fact that we found an athletic Left tackle late in the draft that has potential, so we should save money by building him up. but I mean if ferguson is available and were not trading down I believe you have to take him. And you also made a point about bringing in the best available talent when we pick and not to reach for specific postions, well drafting ferguson would be doing that he is a highly rated player, and will probs make the most impact right away out of any of the top guys in the draft besides vernon davis, who we cannot draft because we have WAY to many needs to worry about then another TE. And im also just curious to see who you would want us to draft? IM glad to see one of the few people though with common sense here anyway.
You really can't call it snubbing when his main competition is Roy Williams and Brian Dawkins... but I see where you're coming from. Great player that may have a little bit too high of a price for a S.
i agree he is alittle overrated but regardless its not gonna be realistic for us to get him, so we wont have to worry about it i dont think
JV, I agree with most of what you said, however to be fair Archuleta (while I think a little overrated) is 28. I would not group him in the same category as Issac Bruce, Willie McGinnest, etc.
