2021 will be the year to judge JD. 2020 he inherited a mess & personally I think his plan to rebuild the team looks good. He has cap space & Draft picks to make a lot of changes. You can't expect JD to clean house & rebuild the team in one year. A lot of these guys he signed this year are all stop gap, one year players. His plan was to have cap space & Draft picks for 2021...mission accomplished there. Now fire Gase & bring in a real HC & CS.

All it took was releasing Le’Veon Bell for the Jets to finally lead the NFL in something.

New York surprisingly cut the former All-Pro running back on Tuesday after failing to find a trade partner willing to take on his salary. The Jets will still have to carry a $4 million dead money salary, but New York now leads the league in salary cap space for the 2021 offseason with Bell’s future earnings off the books.

With this move, the Jets stand to clear room in 2020 that can roll over into 2021 in the amount of whatever Bell signs for elsewhere. Bell has offset language on the $6 million in remaining base salary for 2020, so whatever he earns elsewhere will be deducted from that amount for the Jets,” OverTheCap.com’s Brad Spielberger said.

Bell’s release leaves the Jets with just 35 players under contract for 2021. If the NFL’s salary cap drops to $175 million in 2021, New York will have an estimated $81 million to work with in free agency, according to Spotrac.

“Bell’s 2021 base salary of $8 million was guaranteed for injury, which could have potentially played a role here in cutting him before anything happened on the field,” Spielberger said. “There will be $4 million in dead money from Bell’s signing bonus. In total, his 2021 cap hit will be roughly $11.5 million less than it would have been had Bell remained on the roster.”

Joe Douglas already had more than enough money to reshape New York’s roster in free agency prior to Bell’s release. Now, he has more to spend than any other general manager in the league entering the 2021 offseason. It’s going to take a lot more than one strong free agent class to get things turned around at One Jets Drive, but at least Douglas can swing for the fences once March rolls around.

Big deal if JD wastes that cash on guys like Desir, Kalil and other failures. I'm not all that convinced JD has a great eye for talent yet. Idzik drafted 12 guys and they're all gone now. Macc had cash to spend and blew most of it on two guys who hardly played for us. GM's can make or break a franchise and JD so far is good at tearing down, but his building style is a work in progress. $80m doesn't go as far as it used to.

Stick to Football with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks had a great take on this on their podcast today. First 20 minutes worth listening too.

As this plays out Douglas is looking good. Yes many questions here about signings etc. But look at it.

He knew he'd have Gase for two years. Friends etc. He hoped for the best but knew if this imploded between cap space and draft capital he knew 2021 he'd make a splash. I know we're down and it doesn't look good. That being said with all the cap space and draft capital we have the potential to be set up for a long time. Douglas knew coming in we were not good. He hoped to turn it around with Gase but with how inept we look he knows we can't. Lets next offseason and season play out. If we get a real coach and a competitive team Douglas will look great. Time will tell but I'm starting to buy into his rebuild. Something he'd never say but believed needed to happen. I think he thought Gase could get us to 4-6 wins this year while doing it salvage Darnold and go on with Gase. Now I think he realizes that won't happen. Time will tell maybe not his master plan but definitely a rebuild was.

Cap is going to go down next year so a lot of good players could hit the market. I would love to be able to get Thuney and 1 of A Rob or JuJu

All this roster churn is to free up cap space to sign Braden Mann.

Feels like they need to be #1 in cap space for a decade to be competitive though.

As CMan said, cap space and draft picks are great - on paper - but they're just potential. Unless they're converted into prime assets, that's all they remain. It's like the 300HP in the engine of a parked car: until the key is turned and a spark ignites the fuel, those 300HP are nothing. And while I'm still hopeful that Douglas has a plan and is working towards it, there's very little proof of it so far. The draft was good, but not great, and the FA signings were so-so. Yes, injuries have clouded the picture, as well as Gase's ineptitude, but the fact remains that we're still being asked as fans to have faith and be patient. Well for me, that tune is on its last notes. I'm beyond tired of the perpetual "have patience", and endless rebuilds that only ever succeed in rebuilding the SOJ. As I said, I still have a slim hope that Douglas knows what he's doing, and tearing this thing down and building it up from scratch hasn't been done in my memory so maybe this will work, but it better start producing actual progress real soon or I'll just find other more productive things to do with my time and energy.

Henry Anderson will also be cut creating another 8.3 million. If Fant is cut, another 7.4. Lewis 5.3, Van Roten 3. Not advocating all the online but there is a lot of flexibility if they want it. If you get the first pick (Lawrence) probably keep line relatively intact unless upgrades. If you don't get first pick, Sewell would create bookend tackles that is very interesting.

Yes I agree with the plan...the cupboard was pretty damn bare...this year has been brutal as we have been SO non-competitive. Pretty much every game was over by halftime, and two games into the season, we all knew this season was over. Two games! That is beyond brutal.

Combo of very little talent led by an even worse HC who looks like he has no clue what to do, and even worse, looks like he’s lost and alienated the team.... not one player has spoken out about him...Yes Darnold has said the nice things when asked in a press conference, but even those words are far from a real endorsement...no one has come out with a real forceful show of support. I don’t think any of the players want him there...they sure play like they don’t care.

But I am also running out of patience with endless rebuilds...like others have said, tearing down is easy. Cutting players is not hard, especially when most of them suck. I get that this JDs first time doing it here, and he’s not responsible for the 29 rebuilds that have come before him, in fact, he’s cleaning up the shitstorm left by fucking Mac, who really had no clue how to build a team, as he made so many bad personnel moves its beyond counting.

I also have some hope because at least JD is the first GM we’ve hired that comes with a good pedigree and resume, unlike all the fucking losers before him, when the reactions were ALWAYS “they hired WHO????”. Seriously...we went from Bradway to Tannenbaum to Idzik to MacCagnon. Tanny was maybe the only one who made sense, having trained under Parcells, and he was the only one who had some success, but the others shit the bed so badly...

Bradway got raped every trade he made (who can forget trading a first round pick for Doug fucking Jolley and a fucking kicker!) and yet we STILL kept him on as a scout!

Idzik also knew how to tear shit down but he was a flat out moron with talent evaluation....he should have come away with a receiver in that draft and could have had Brandon Cooks but took a box safety instead and gave us a couple of receivers who are already out of the league. And he shouldn’t have used all 12 picks....no team carries that many rookies...he should have traded up or traded for future picks. But his eye for talent was horrendous.

Mac was only marginally better in that his high first round picks were not outright busts, but they were each and every one of them the wrong pick. Who the fuck drafts a safety when you need a QB and Watson and Mahomes are on the board? That’s a fireable offense right there. He ignored OL intentionally. He never drafted pass rushers...the list goes on and on.

I know everyone on this board knows all this...but it just highlights how deep a hole JD needs to dig out of.

all that being said, we’ve been rebuilding for so damn long....JD has to get this right. The tear down is complete...we are at empty cupboards....probably less than five players that are really any good...Becton looks good, Crowder, Maye looks good, Q looks ok not great, and then the Darnold question. That’s really about it. Outside of the damn punter, there’s really not one position that’s solid and should not be upgraded. Pretty damn bare bones.

so it’s a good thing we have a lot of picks and huge cap space...but JD is going to need to NAIL these next few drafts, and next one needs to be a home run. So far, he has the best pedigree but results so far are mixed right? Robby should have been resigned. The OL has been a mixed bag outside of Becton...maybe marginally better than last year but not miles better....so I think we are really still in a show me mode.

he better come through...I don’t know how many tear downs you can ask of your fan base...

You know what concerns me the most... in all these well thought out scenarios the big "if" is the new coach. NOw call me jaded after 53 years but unless that bum goes and we get a competent HC and staff it doesn't matter how much money you have or who you select.

I'll remind everyone how important it is to have a "bonified" HC... Remember the last year of Kotite? A lot of the players that played on the 1-15 team played for Parcells who coach them up to 9-7. That my friends is the key.

If Mosley didn't opt out this season he'd be a cowboy right now and we would have another #1 and be free of his monster contract.

I still assume JD will trade him next march though and that will free up a lot of cash, 12 million next year and 16 million a year going forward.

Or we can keep Mosley for 2021 while he is still sorta cheap and see if we can get some value. Wonder how JD will play this?

    Welp.

    Jamal Adams.
    Robby Anderson.
    Le'Veon Bell.

These are 3 former Jets that I'll continue to root for in order to prove just how much JD sucks ass as an NFL GM.

Say what we say about Adam Gase but it's JOE DOUGLAS who's to blame for these 3 no longer being here. He's the one who decided to move them.

    Fk JD.

It would seem to be almost impossible to fire a GM as bad as Idzik and replace him with someone worse, but the Jets managed to do it. We better hope JD is the real deal and his plan works, despite being hire by the Jets, because the Jets failure is tied directly to being owned and run by people who have no idea about the sport and thus can’t identify the right people to hire to begin with.

No team will take on Mosley's contract, plus I truly feel Mosley will be retiring before ever playing another snap. In an interview after he opted out this year he said he needs time to get physically in shape and rekindle the flame mentally for playing again. Sounds like he has one foot out the door.

  20. Cap space doesnt excite me.We either get burnt by the big names or get what we pay for w the 2nd/3rd tier players.

The only way out of this is drafting & developing w a plan,an identity & a purpose
