I went with Kotite. Gase is terrible, but he also has arguably the least talented roster in the league. Kotite actually had a decent amount of talent that he couldn't do jack shit with; he could only eek out 4 wins in two years with much of the same team that Parcells, two years later, nearly brought to the Super Bowl.
I have to disagree. They were pretty competitive in most games in '95, but were blown out by the Dolphins 52-14 and Raiders 47-10, and lost to the Bills 29-10, the Falcons 13-3, the Patriots 20-7, the Oilers 23-6, and the Saints 12-0. For a former OC, that's pretty awful. They had the 30th ranked offense and the 26th ranked D. It's not like they didn't have any talent, either. In '96, they lost to the Broncos 31-6, the Colts 21-7, the Redskins 31-16, the Raiders 34-13, the Bills 35-10, the Oilers 35-10, and the Patriots 34-10 (the Bills, Oilers and Patriots were the last 3 games of the season). Kotite was a better GM than he was HC. In '95 he drafted Kyle Brady, Hugh Douglas, Matt O'Dwyer, Tyrone Davis (who wound up being pretty good for GB), and Eddie Mason. In '96 he drafted Keyshawn Johnson, Alex Van Dyke (who lasted 5 years in the NFL), Ray Mickens, Marcus Coleman, and Chris Hayes. Kotite was said to run slack practices and to leave practice early to beat traffic. He obviously didn't care, and imo was not the nice guy that people say. If he was, he wouldn't have taken advantage of Hess and the team the way he did. Gase at least cares and tries. In some ways that makes him worse than Kotite, as Kotite obviously didn't care or try that hard. Kotite had a lot more talent to work with than Gase has had, however. I agree that he didn't ruin a FQB prospect, but that's only because he didn't draft a QB.
idzik and macagnan would kill for those drafts. in fact maybe even parcells. LOL. 3 starters in 95 and 2 in 96 with serviceable play from mickens. Van dyke was a head scratcher. not terrible but the sapp thing came right down from hess.
That's an easy one. What man would want to be kicked in the NUTS? Slap me in my face all you like. But don't hurt my manhood.
Kotex! I hate Gase, but, Kotite takes this. Gase almost won twice as many games as RK in one season than RK won in 2.
Can't believe this is even a thread. It shows people lack knowledge of history and are way too reactionary these days.
Pretty funny to see the Kyle Brady pick being praised as a positive in so many of these posts. It took about 20 years for Jets' fans to gain that perspective (or forget why they hated that selection).
I have to go with Kotite. I was a season ticket holder back then, and sat through every minute of every home game. I still cringe when I hear his name. He took a Philadelphia playoff team, and ran it into the ground before they canned him. Then, Leon wanted to “bring Richie home” pretty much without considering anyone else. There was such a feeling of hopelessness when he was the coach. It’s something I’ll never forget. Gase hasn’t affected me as badly - at least not yet!
We needed Bill Parcells to take us out of that 1-15 1996 era etc. And we'll need a Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy type to get us out of this mess we're currently in. It's. Bad. Really bad.
