Ha ha, Herm's up to his old antics with his dumb quotes and his conservative style. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city_chiefs/16270529.htm Herm Edwards expected some frustrated players after the Chiefs’ three-game losing streak dropped them to 7-7 and on the verge of extinction in the playoff race. He didn’t expect that one of them, running back Larry Johnson, would go so far as to publicly criticize the Chiefs for a lack of creative play-calling. Edwards indicated Monday that those were the thoughts of only one player — an outspoken one at that — and not a sign that he’s losing his players as their season appears to be slipping away. “Obviously, he’s frustrated,” Edwards said. “And there are a lot of frustrated players here. Coaches, too. We haven’t found a way to score points in the last couple of weeks. That’s the plan this week: Get some points on the board. That’s been our Achilles’ heel the last couple of weeks. “I’ll talk to the whole team about where we are right now (and) what we need to do. And that’s something we all have to look at and do. We’ve lost three in a row. No one’s happy about that, especially me. I’m not very happy about it, and I know the players and the coaches aren’t. We’ve got to find a way to get the ship turned around the right way. Right now, it’s going the wrong way.” The Chiefs have struggled to score points much of the time since Trent Green returned as their starting quarterback five games ago. They were held without a touchdown for the first time in that stretch in Sunday night’s 20-9 loss in San Diego, a game that led Johnson to stray from the company line. He didn’t mention names, but his comments were obviously aimed at Edwards and the offensive coaches, including coordinator Mike Solari. “We need to sit down and change something,” Johnson said. “This is getting ridiculous. Everybody is saying, ‘Oh, it’s fine, it’s OK.’ I don’t know who in their mind thinks this is OK. This is nothing that’s OK. We need to change a lot of it. We need to sit down and change a lot. I’m getting tired of hearing that ‘We’ll get ’em next week’ speech. We need to really start sitting down and knowing what we need to do to put points on the board and what we need to do to do win games. “They need to fix it. I’m getting tired of this. It’s tough running against a brick wall until you break it open, you know? You see other teams do different things; you see different teams react differently. Like I said, you don’t have to bang your head against a brick wall hard enough to crack a hole in it. There are other ways of doing different things.” Johnson said opposing defenses have made adjustments to what the Chiefs like to do and the Chiefs haven’t responded. “When you do the same things over and over again, a good defense … they’re going to do things to stop you,” Johnson said. “If you don’t switch it up, if you don’t do different things, that’s how it goes. It’s a good defense. We played them a lot of weeks ago, and they see what we do on tape, you know, we never changed a bit of it, and that’s what happens.” Edwards responded by saying the Chiefs’ offensive failings haven’t been because they’re too predictable. “We’ve been putting ourselves in known situations, especially on passing downs, because we don’t make any significant yardage on first down,” he said. “It puts you in a pickle in second and third down. That’s happened some. Our inability to get in an offensive rhythm has hurt us. “We’ve got good players. We’ve got a good staff of coaches. We’ve got to get it corrected, and this will be another tough week this week going on road to the West Coast to play a team that has a pretty good defense. We’ve played some pretty good defenses. If you make an error here or there it creates negative plays.” The Chiefs figure to play another low-scoring game Saturday night against the Raiders in Oakland. The Chiefs beat the Raiders 17-13 last month at Arrowhead Stadium by scoring one of their two touchdowns with a minute and a half remaining. After Sunday night’s loss, Green was surprised someone was still asking about the Chiefs and their playoff chances. “We’re going to try to win these next two so we can finish with a winning season,” he said. “If having a winning record at 9-7 puts us in a position for the playoffs, then great. But right now, after losing three in a row, we’ve just got to find a way to win. “You try to put yourself in a position all year long to make a run at the end of it. That’s why this is disappointing.” Edwards said: “We’ve got to finish this thing off right. We’ll see what happens. You never know. Until they send us a letter that says we’re out. … The last time I checked, they hadn’t sent us that letter.”
A few weeks agao LJ was saying how he loved playing for Herm, how he could now give his all b/c herm is a black coach and now he's undermining him- typical.
I love the whole predictability theme. Larry slams the Chiefs offense and Herm's speeches as predictable and Herm trots out the same tired cliches he used in NY. Junc predictably defends Herm. It's all cyclical.
herm still knows how to state the obvious -We haven’t found a way to score points in the last couple of weeks. That’s the plan this week: Get some points on the board. That’s been our Achilles’ heel the last couple of weeks. -- yep herm scoring points is a good drive not a kick
I am not defending Herm, I am poitning out what an idiot LJ is. A few weeks ago they were winning and in playoff position and he was saying how he was playing harder for Herm b/c Herm is black and now he's whining. I don't care what herm does in KC, I care what he did here and he did a good job here.
He seems to be right on the money with his comments here but I will grant you that nonsense he was saying a few weeks ago wasn't too smart. I think a player is allowed to change his opinion of the coach though. If a guy is a malcontent initially and a coach wins him over and the player starts praising the coach is he an "idiot" for whining initially? It certainly can work the other way where a player loses confidence in his coach for whatever reason.
this is what Herm doesn't get and never will. he is putting his team in known situations on passing downs because they do the same things over and over on first down and the defense knows, which is why they aren't gaining significant yardage on those downs. of course Herm doesn't understand the dynamic of this.
I’m getting tired of hearing that ‘We’ll get ’em next week’ speech. We need to really start sitting down and knowing what we need to do to put points on the board and what we need to do to do win games. That quote sums of Herm's coaching strategy. We'll get em next week. The second sentence is what real coaches do. Figure out how to win games. Herm also ran Curtis Martin into brick walls all the time, including when he was so injured he could barely walk. What a hack.
For whatever it's worth, I happened to take a look at chiefsplanet, and there are quite a few apparently disgruntled posters over there about how Herm has "fixed" the offense. He apparently said that the team needed to make the offense and defense more balanced, but people didn't think that meant that the offense should be worse.
Herman Edwards runs a predictable offense? HA! That Larry Johnson has no idea what he's talking about. As if it's Herm's fault that he can't make it happen on 3rd and 8 draws. The nerve of these youngsters. -X-
An argument about Herm with junc is the last thing you want to get into. It can only give you headaches.
You play to win the games...by blowing all your timeouts in the first ten minutes for no good reason, being so conservative that Marty Schottenheimer thinks you're nuts and by saying things that make no sense.
I don't know if I'd call LJ an idiot, but I think his 180 in opinion of Herm shows the mounting frustration he's been feeling, and possibly much of the team, in losing 3 straight December games. But you're right to an extent, it is never the smartest thing in the world to start a mutiny through the press.
