I've heard it multiple times now.

If they win the next 2 and the Eagles win the next 2, and the Cowboys go 1-1, Giants are OUT of the playoffs.

Am I mistaken when I say that three teams from the same division cannot go to the playoffs?

Well, Giants have the tiebreaker over the Falcons for the WC. Not that it means much for the division, or anything.

Mike and the Mad dog just explained this. If the Giants win 2 and the Eagles beat the Cowboys and then lose to the Falcons the Eagles will still make it in based on confrence record. I am doing that from memory so correct me if I'm wrong.

If the scenario you described occurs Philly would win the division at 10-6, Dallas would be the 5 seed at 10-6 and the Giants would be the lone NFC team at 9-7 and take the 6 seed(the Falcons would've lost to the Eagles).

The x number of teams from a division only comes into play when there is a tiebreaker needed for 3 or more teams. If 2 teams are from the same division that tie is broken first and the lower ranked team eliminated.

The reason the Giants control their own destiny is because they beat Atlanta and they're the only team that could tie them at 9-7 for the final WC spot. Even if the NFC East ended up in a 3 way tie at 9-7 with Phi beating Dal and losing to Atl they'd still make the playoffs. Phi would take the division based on the best head to head record. Giants would take the 5 seed winning the tiebreaker over Dal and Atl then Dal would beat out Atl for the final spot.

If you have to rely on other teams to win or lose you do not control your own destiny.

They don't have to. The other teams winning or losing only effects their position. If the Giants win their last 2 games there is no way they are not in the postseason, the only question is if it's as a 5 or 6 seed.

edit: after looking at it further they don't actually control their own destiny yet, if the Eagles, Giants and Falcons are all tied at 9-7 the Giants would miss out on the playoffs. Dallas would have to finish at 10-6 for this to occur also.

The giants do control their own destiny.

The tie-breaker between the 3 teams would get the Eagles and Giants in the playoffs.

The first tiebreaker would be for the 5th spot. The Eagles would get it.

The tie-breaker procedure would then restart, with all remaining tied teams (Atl. and the Giants). NYG would advance because of the head-to- head win.

We better control our own destiny after all we've gone through this season.

I heard on Mike and Chris that the Giants do not control there own destiny, but the scenario that has them 9-7 and out is extremely unlikely.

umm. they are not wrong: If the Eagles, Giants and Falcons are all tied at 9-7 the Giants would be knocked out. This would happen in the Eagles were to beat the Cowboys, and then lose to the Falcons in Week 17.

If they all tie, The Eagles and Giants make the playoffs. Read earlier post.

What hardships have the Giants gone through? Injuries? Welcome to the NFL.

The 2005 Saints went through some hardships.

That is not true. If all 3 teams are tied at 9-7, with the Eagles losing to the Falcons in Week 17, and beating the Cowboys in Week 16, here is how it goes:

First you have the break the division tiebreak of the Eagles and Giants. The Eagles win that tiebreaker due to a better division record (5-1 to 4-2). Then comparing the Eagles and Falcons, the Falcons would get the 5 seed due to the head to head win in Week 17.

Now, you have to break the tie beetween the Eagles and Giants, which as I already explained, you would have to break with the divisional tiebreakers. Against, Eagles would win due to a better divisional record.

To put it in the simplest terms, one of two things has to happen this week for the Giants to control their own destiny, a Dallas win or a Falcons loss.

Ouch You are correct. I assumed the eagles would get the 5 seed. They would not in that scenario. Nice catch.

As per Berman on ESPN, There is 1 scenerio where the Giants win out and still do not get in. So that eliminates them being in control.
