Worst-Case Tackle Scenarios

Discussion in 'Draft' started by joelip, Apr 14, 2020.

  1. If OL is what we’re dead set on doing it can only go 1 of 2 ways.

    A. Becton/Wirfs are there at 11.Those are the 2 that fit the scheme.Wirfs maybe an RT only but if hes a pro bowl level Leon Searcy type ill be happy. Becton’s been my fav dating back to September,of course i liked him as more of a late 1st/early 2nd possible move to RT.

B.Trade down a few slots & take Jones. He has good athleticism for the scheme & is an actual pure left tackle.

Wills has good tape but same deal as Wirfs w possibly being an RT But he doesnt fit the wide split scheme as well. My thoughts on Thomas are well documented. It’s either Becton/Wirfs or trade down for Jones.

Good points. I'm hoping Douglas fools us all and the Jets fans will still be happy.

Wills is a RT and he has experience protecting a QB blind side as Tua was lefthanded .

  4. LT is different footwork & typically sees more wide 9 speed rushers while RT sees more strong side power rushers. Understand the reason why he was at RT..would just like to see actual tape of him at LT before drafting him top 15.

Scouts weigh in on Mekhi Becton, who could be Jets' first round choice in 2020 NFL Draft
Trading back and taking another tackle could still be an option

If the Jets are going to draft an offensive lineman at No. 11, many expect they'll be left with the last available of the Big Four tackles. And there's an increasing belief that the last one standing will be Louisville's massive Mekhi Becton.

The 6-7, 364-pounder would literally be a huge pick for the Jets, and if he's the last of the top four still on the board, he could be difficult for them to pass up.

But that's assuming the Jets don't think the Big Four is really a Big Five.

Some scouts do, which adds a bit of a mystery to what the Jets will do if they stay at 11, or whether they might be willing to trade down a little bit. Becton, Iowa's Tristan Wirfs, Alabama's Jedrick Wills and Georgia's Andrew Thomas are generally considered the head of the class.

But some teams think that at least one, and possibly as many as three other tackles aren't that far off.

"People keep leaving out (USC's) Austin Jackson," an NFC scout told SNY. "And a lot of people seem to like (Houston's) Josh Jones and the kid from Boise State (Ezra Cleveland). Maybe they're not right up there with the other four, but I'm telling you some teams are going to have them ranked awfully close."

That could include the Jets, who have looked into all three - Jackson (6-5, 322), Jones (6-5, 319) and Cleveland (6-6, 311) -- as GM Joe Douglas continues his deep dive into the offensive line prospects who'll be available in the NFL Draft next week. It's unclear how the Jets have them rated and whether Douglas would consider any of them at No. 11. But the possibility that they all could be worthy of a Top 15-20 pick - "easily," another scout said - opens up the thought of the Jets trading down and still landing what some consider a top-tier tackle.

The general consensus, though, is there is at least some separation between those three and the "Big Four", which includes Becton, who is the biggest of the bunch by far and still has remarkable athleticism and 5.1 speed. It seems all but certain that two, and maybe three, will go in the Top 10 and the projected order depends on who is asked.

More and more league insiders, though, seem to think Becton is the most likely to slip out of the Top 10.

"He'll be the fourth one off the board," said one NFL source. "He probably was always the fourth best, but then people fell in love with his size. The more they look, though, the more it's obvious the others are more pro-ready prospects and have fewer concerns."

The "concerns" about Becton aren't big enough to knock him out of the Top 15, of course. Most of them revolve around his weight, which leads to worries about injuries, about maintaining his quickness, and about keeping it manageable throughout his career. He's so strong and agile, though, that his size could also be a temptation for teams looking for an anchor on the left side of their line.

Several sources said the belief is the Jets would prefer the 6-5, 315-pound Thomas or the 6-4, 312-pound Wills (most think the 6-5, 320-pound Wirfs will be long gone by the time the Jets pick). And that again opens up the question of whether the Jets, faced with the choice of Becton, would prefer to trade down.

Trading down does have advantages, especially considering Douglas' desire to build the Jets through the draft. He'd likely have to stay inside the Top 15 to still be able to land Jackson, who was quarterback Sam Darnold's former teammate (though he was only a backup at the time).

"He's a gem if he gets the right coach who can fix his technique problems," one scout said. "With a little work, he could be as good as the other four."

Douglas could potentially drop even lower if he sets his eyes on Jones, whom the scout said "is in the same boat as Jackson, but a little less polished," or Cleveland, who is undersized but has "unlimited potential if he bulks up," the scout said.

It's possible neither of them would be considered Day 1 starters, but that could be fine for the Jets who signed George Fant in free agency to be their left tackle and return Chuma Edoga, another USC product, at right tackle. Douglas did enough with the line this offseason to buy the Jets some time to develop whichever offensive linemen they draft.

All he has to do is decide if he wants to take one in the first round - and which of the seven he really wants.

    ***

I find it impossible to believe that the Jets prefer Thomas considering he is not a scheme fit at all. I think those sources are blowing smoke trying to get one of the teams ahead of them to take Thomas.

My fairy tale wish at the moment is that the Jets had the 11th pick LAST year and the #3 pick this year. I hate to say it but amazingly it probably would have helped us last year as well as likely getting our pick of LT's in 2020.

Man we have bad luck sometimes.

I'm interested in your analysis. I've heard some pundits say that Willis, although he has only played RT, has the athleticism to move to LT over time. I'm just a Jets fan who doesn't follow college football much, but when I look at Wilils tape I just see a tackle who consistently is able to carry out his assignments. What do you see?

Combine Joe's superior eye for oline talent and our 11th pick in the draft. IF IF IF Joe finds a tackle that he really feels can foot the bill for the next 15 years, AND that tackle fall to within striking distance (8/9/10 range) THEN yes, pull the trigger, burn a 3rd, and get your guy.

A lot of IFs, but if all that happened and Joe was right, no one will remember the 3rd pick he traded away (15 years ago!).

Another possibility is one or two of the top 4 tackles are still there at 11 and Joe doesn't love either of them and takes Lamb/Jeudy.

I have a feeling some of the info is false, put out by teams to try to get a player they like to drop to them.

Would not be upset if Douglas took Cleveland in the 2nd round. He's big and agile and would be the right left tackle for the Jets..

I agree I think Willis could make that transition easily to left tackle. He's mobile and has a mean streak.

    Guys enjoy the Draft!

Mayor DiBlasio on TV now saying he wants NYC Public Schools open in September but large events like Sporting events in stadiums, and Concerts are "one of the last things" they are considering opening before small business and restaurants

Once there' s a vaccine we are all absolutely good to go

  17. Carrying out assignments on the college level is one thing. You have to display certain physical traits & specific skills in order to be successful on the NFL level. No matter how dominant a college OL may appear their is still a physical/athletic projection that has to play into the equation.

In the case of Wills i dont doubt his physical ability to play at the NFL level. However dont like the idea of drafting a guy who never played LT in college To be the long term answer at LT in the pros. no matter the reason.Id rather he gone back for another yr & put it on tape.Thats just a projection i dont care for.

Secondly, not all OL are created equal. Jets are said to be switching to a wide split zone based scheme. This requires the best athletes & blockers in open space. Wills while a good athlete His game is more 1st level blocking based w lower flexibility, strength & leverage. Jets will be looking for the top athletes who are fluid, get out & execute blocks in space. Wills i dont think is a fit nor is Thomas.

Seems like you make a good point, which means that a WR is probably your pick at 11 if Wirfs and Becton are gone and there is no good trade-down offer. Would you take a not-so-great trade down offer to make sure you get Jones later in the first. Or would your preference be to wait until 48 and hope for Jackson, Cleveland, or Wanogho?

I am really liking the idea the Jets trading down to get 2nd tier but solid T or OL like Jackson, Cleveland or Thomas with the first pick and getting an extra pick (assuming 3rd rd)or 2.

Granted the Jets have had bad luck and sucked with draft picks over the years, but if DJ follows the Ravens philosophy and their successes in building deep talent, jets could do a lot with their first 5 picks for the future.

After the 1st pick, the Jets can still draft 2 WRs ( including Gibson’s multi talented positions) an edge and CB And another OL with their first 5 picks and haven’t even got to the forth round pick! They can also take a risk or take a flyer with some of the mid round picks (4th and 5th rd), such as speed OLB/QB etc.

I think the Jets for once are in a great draft position where value is certain to meet need and don’t see many circumstances out of Jets control that can be a worst case scenario. Now of course that doesn’t preclude the Jets from taking a CJ Henderson or Chassion and forcing the worst case scenario onto themselves.

However if all 4 OTs are off the board then the Jets will either be staring at there choice of elite talent at WR which is also a huge need or would likely have some tantalizing trade down options where they can stock up on picks while also having good options of next tier OTs and WRs.

I’m finding it almost impossible for the top 10 to screw the Jets.
